Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

Come on now, I was expecting some sort of Criminal Girls style petting and instead it's something like this? From the reaction of people here calling it creepy I was expecting much worse, this just looks silly.
The article says reports were exaggerated so I'm guessing some reactions may be based on those rather than the reality.

Though it's weird they say it wasn't inappropriate in the same statement of them removing it.

Weirder than the minigame is people still claiming this is not censorship but localization. This is the new "forced drama", as in localization meaning censorship I like.

My problem with the censorship debate and the reason I might use a word like "localization'"in its place is that I just feel like when people state that something is being censored, it's typically assumed that this is inherently a bad thing. "Censorship" is bad. And as I've argued numerous times this isn't something I agree with necessarily. It can be a bad thing. But before I deride something as unnecessary censorship, I feel like it's important to examine what's being edited and why.

Man there was a lot of voice acting in that minigame. It was completely optional too. I do not like this decision. How much else is gonna get cut?

Don't you see how they are blushing? That's some rated m shit right there!

I am not against the petting, but people have been acting extremely childish over this

Seems a bit excessive to outright remove it IMO, it never seemed creepy or perverse to me considering it was just the faces.

The way I see it: If people don't like it then don't use it - I don't like the Pokemon Amie minigame so I never used it.

Overall I'm rather indifferent to the whole thing.

On the one hand, I would prefer if they didn't remove content regardless of how others see it - it's their game they shouldn't be pressured to remove or change content to appease people.

On the other hand, I see why they don't want to deal with any backlash and potentially upset western fans/ lose sales.

Will be interesting to see the sales numbers in the west compared to awakening, with the localization changes and several versions being available.
Shame to see some people acting as if it was a simple localization change, and to see Nintendo cut more and more content from their western releases.

Hope they'll see the mixed reception and feedback, even if it's too late to change anything...

Fates is going to sell way more than Awakening. Awakening bolstered the series' popularity in the West, and Smash probably amplified it even more.

Plus, there are two versions of the game, and many of us plan to get both. So, that alone will guarantee higher sales numbers.

Yes the game will now be $5.00 because they took out maybe an hour of weird optional minigame content

for peopl like me...

not an hour....nor minut.... nor day.....

24/7

all month!

u understand my sturggle?

damn nitnendo

they cucked me!

CUCKED ME!

waifusm is a dying subject, with normies making fun of it, and people like Melonpan-senpai being bullied because he is in the holy church of waifusm

it's not fair goddamnit

not fair at all

and when i see people happy about this, i die a little inside

because we should not remove content from games

it makes the game non complete

just like mgs v: the phantom pain

Fuck man. Every damn game, it's the same thing. Yeah, it's been the case for a while now, but I'm really getting tired of this kind of crap. There has to be a better solution to this than just cutting features/content from the rest of the world for every release out of Japan.

2nded. It's ridiculous that dev time and resources were spent on a feature that almost half of your consumers aren't even gonna see.

People who cheer for a game's content getting cut are pretty weird.

From the article:

A rep explained while also defending the original intent of the Japanese version:

“Yes, that is the case. You might have heard somewhat misinterpreted or exaggerated information about the Japanese original game, but even in the Japanese original version, we have not included any features which are considered inappropriate in Japan.”

I wonder if we'll even get #FE at all now, since the whole game may be considered "inappropriate" for Americans.

And I don't like someone telling me that just because I'm American that I can't handle something so benign existing. It's really frustrating to be told that "we won't sell you something, because you're of X nationality and speak X language" and that is the entirety of their reasoning and nothing else.

Disappointed, insofar as those are high-quality models/animations that I'm not sure we'll find anywhere else.

Personally, I'd prefer a compromise where we at least get a model viewer to appreciate the 3D Kozaki art.
I think those are not 3D models but Live2D

I have no issues with this but I fully expect a gamergate shitstorm in about ten seconds

Expect to see lots of people blaming Allison Rapp even though she has nothing to do with localization

Why? I follow her on Twitter, and I'm sure she would want it in the game. (She seems to be into moe japanese games)

Not sure how much my enjoyment of the game would be contingent on whether or not this feature was in but unlike rewriting Soleil's interactions which was definitely understandable I find it slightly dumb that this was removed, mostly because of it being an oddity that is easy to overlook (and before someone says this feature would provide buffs to your character the fact that there is no seeming replacement to this proves how inconsequential it was). It's better to just own that feature set you were confident in since the lack of it in the west isn't going to stop the reputation Fire Emblem has for itself elsewhere, or in the larger context of it's series in present.

But that's just me playing devil's advocate mostly because this is an inclusion that struck me more as silly than anything.

That's still kind of important.

This wasn't just an extra silly thing like that stupid matchmaking thing in Awakening. This is an actual function of the game that affects the gameplay. If it was replaced with some other way to affect character growth in the same way, I'd have no problem, but right now, we're getting less content that is not purely cosmetic like the censorship in Xenoblade.

This is not a practice I want to support.

You act like all content is equal, and worth having simply because it was made. The feature was always a weird fit for the series, and comes off creepy to a lot of western gamers (who made up over 70% of Awakening's Worldwide audience).

Obviously character/support growth will be re-balanced to reflect the change.

Maybe next time they can think about the international market when developing the game instead of including shit like this that the localizes are going to have to cut out to avoid losing more sales internationally than they managed to gain in Japan...

I'm not sure what issue people have with reality.

I've always enjoyed how FE's been getting closer and closer to a realistic portrayal of medieval warfare in recent releases adding interpersonal connections and romance in the midst of battle to humanize the soldiers, whilst keeping well documented historical events such as generals petting all their soldiers before battle to inspire them.

But I guess a realistic battle sim that actually added extra depth by giving you options to inspire your troops in ways that match history is too much to ask.

This is really lame, while I don't think many would have spent a considerable amount of time with the feature it was still a fun(in a silly way) thing, and totally harmless.
Cutting content this way is ridiculous.

Lets be honest, the number of people this matters to are probably so minor it doesn't matter in the end, same goes for the translation changes.

I feel...well would have felt sorry for the english VAs having to say most of those lines lol. On the positive side, smaller digital download!

...OK, what the fuck, why am I paying full price for a game that is less than the original version? I don't care about the other thing they cut, but this isn't even offensive!

Still gonna buy the game because im fan of FE, but never like wheb they remove features of games and this was one i wanted to try cause it looked like fun.

...Mehhh. I didn't like the feature myself, and looking at it objectively, it's a really lacking minigame, but I am surprised they removed it completely.

I don't get how that's considered inappropriate, it seemed harmless just like the similar feature in Pokemon X/Y.
Oh well, wasn't interested in the game anyways.

Those were pokemon, not people. And depending on the pokemon it was still fairly disconcerting.

It was a pretty useless feature tbh. I only used it in the JP version to look at the Live2D character models. Someone was able to extract them though so you can just do that on your PC now.

Doesn't need to be rebalanced at all, the effect was minimal. Only thing missing is one accessory that could be gotten from that IIRC.
