Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

It's so disheartening to see people praise, cheer and support removal of content. It's like some want less in a game, just so that the average candy crush player sitting on the bus next to them will give their approval.

The whole "censorship is not censorship" mental gymnastics is also pretty jarring to me. People never wanna own up to the terms and labels of the unsavory things they support I guess. Seriously reminds me of people who say "gay people don't deserve the same rights as everyone else, but I'm not a homophobe" argument.

I find it disheartening to see so many people of the opinion that any removed content, no matter its description or quality, as sacrosanct and inseparable without negatively affecting the quality of the final game.

Not all content is equal. Final products can be improved upon by removing things. This happens all the damn time in any kind of creative media, it's called editing.

So many mixed reactions to this.

It looks more silly/dumb than creepy. If anything, as a non-American, I think Americans who find it creepy are the weird ones here.

That said, I don't think I'll miss it. It seems like a pointless time grind. And since it looks like you can grind support points to not have characters die in Conquest, that alleviates the only worry I had.

Re: People hoping people cancel their special editions over this. Anybody who has a preorder and actually pissed enough about this would probably rather get some satisfaction by scalping their copy instead of simply canceling.

I don't think censorship in all forms is inherently bad.

I'm against censorship of an artist's vision. My problem with the minigame is it feels like it's thrown in purely to pander to a certain group and removed purely to please another. It feels like a business decision one way or another that in no way actually affects the main content of the game.

I really don't like the path it's going down either way. Like, to what extreme does this go before it's just too much for even most of gaf? Do they go even crazier with the odd side content in the next game just to censor that even harder?

Goddamn remember when Fire Emblem discussions didn't revolve around this stuff? Good times.

People in this thread want the content cut. People in the DOAX 3 threads go nuts for what is essentially a giant fan service mini game collection. One audience has no choice but to import, one does not need to. One prefers Japanese dubs, one prefers jelly donuts instead of rice balls.

You've made zero coherent points with this post. I'm impressed.

Cause anime is bad or something
I've played a lot of anime games where you don't rub the screen in fact I would say most anime games don't. You don't see this shit in persona and there are people that might even consider that a waifu simulator, ( I personally don't, but almost none of my friends would give it a Chance)

This. People go out of their way to avoid judging things on a case by case basis, and that's just pointless and impractical.

Yep. The minigame was definitely designed by committee and intended to pander to a certain subset [of this thread]. It's no artist's vision.

I fully expect the people who are gloating about this, to be all smiles when a feature they care about gets cut from a game they're looking forward to, in the name of mass appeal.

I don't care about this minigame, but celebrating this is just too strange.

This isn't included or associated with the petting minigame right. How are they going to handle this? we have full 3D models of big dick boys!

I like how this has nearly as many posts as the thread about Soleil from last week, despite that one taking 3 days to get there and this one has been up for not even 5 hours.

That was odd to me as well.

Seriously people need to shut the fuck up about attributing everything they disapprove of as GamerGate, this has been getting old for over a year now.

But GG is a factor. They are expressing outrage over this. And they have been around-despite their dwindling presence-to this day even. It's not really old and they're still harassing people. It has it's place.

Previous Fire Emblems got MUCH bigger modes cut, and i mean actual modes not this type of minigames. However not much people talked about it because this series was not popular at all. I think awakening is the first to sell over a million worldwide.

What kinds of modes are we talking about here? And why were they cut?

I mean how is it odd? There wasn't really any defense of Soleil's conversation, it was a stupid joke that completely backfired.

RD's difficulty level is the big one that he'll mention

But those modes didn't involve touching your waifu, did they? :P

My understanding is you can only see the models in the brief support conversations. In effect, this game's model viewer, pokedex, etc., has been removed. All of those amazing character models and animations are no longer easily accessible. :-(

.

You and I read a very different topic. Lots of people were defending gay conversion in there. I wouldn't call it a stupid joke either, to be perfectly honest.

you can't tell me this isn't hilarious

It is hilarious and sad. There is even a petition somewhere to try to get Alison Rapp fired from Nintendo because "censorship" though she doesn't work on those games. They call her an SJW menace and many other VERY horrible names. It's shit.

The only time this censorship discussion ever seems to come up at all. PERIOD. Is when waifu's are involved and it's annoying.

The good news is that there is no singular artist with one concise vision when it comes to making video games (most entertainment mediums, actually), so that thing you oppose isn't actually something that tends to happen in video games, which are already made by committee through several compromises along the way.

This definition of censorship that some on GAF want to use, which seems to simply mean "changes to a creative decision that someone was in favor of because of other factors" has already happened, over and over, to every game you've ever loved (made by more than one person). You just didn't see it happen because that is how video games are made. This is how they're localized.

The fundamental nature of creating something with a large group of people is not censorship.

This is extremely disappointing. =/ I understand the complaints about the feature (but, like...just ignore it if you don't like it?), but I think a lot of people fail to realize that for gay individuals like myself, this feature was really nice because, as far as I understood, you could use this "petting" feature on any character, including characters of the same sex as your avatar. This was the only way to have any sort of intimacy with same-sex characters outside of the single male and female characters that you can marry with a same-sex avatar. While it's great that the same-sex marriage is still there, and it's certainly a big step up from Awakening that featured none of it, it's still extremely disappointing that there was even more that we could have had, but of course they cut that out of the localization. =/

It's not exactly difficult to notice that the unisex aspect of this feature has been completely ignored by detractors, mainly because that means you can't use terms like "waifu petting simulator, "waifuamie" and so on to describe it. Acknowledging that IS went to the lengths of making sure that players can do the same to all the male characters in an industry where fanservice elements are usually one sided would potentially lessen any argument levied against it.

Going by the popular opinion of the numerous threads we've had on this subject, liking this feature and/or planning to use it in any capacity makes you a creepy weirdo, regardless of sexual orientation.

Considering that information, it seems many are happy that you won't get that chance.

I'm still planning on getting the game, but the reaction to this game in particular, including the various levels of hyperbole has been interesting to witness. I don't know why but at times it reminds me of when I learned of the fact that people who said they weren't engaging with a piece of media due to interactions with people who have no connection to the development or consumption of said media weren't being sarcastic. Probably because of the curious reaction it conjures.

I think Neiteio is talking specifically about the petting models. That one in the pic is definitely not one of them.

Oh, I assumed that the "model viewer" was just what was in that pic (I don't know too much about Fates itself). I guess that might still be in, then, if it's like a separate viewer. It feels like something that could be altered too, though.

Unless...

I think one of the three paths of the game requires that you do something related to that in order to unlock one of the characters, so they might not be able to remove it even if they wanted to.

My problem is that I do feel like it's kind of disingenuous to say that content that is part of the game can or should just be ignored if it's not to your liking. If this was the a deleted scene that was tucked away on the extras disc, it would be silly of me to deride the inclusion of such bonus footage. But I feel like it's kind of akin to arguing that a scene in a film that's deemed not to work in editing shouldn't be cut from the Blu-Ray release seeing as how people can use the skip chapter feature if they really wanted to.

I realize this might seem a disingenuous comparison. However, I do think some care needs to be taken even in a medium like gaming to realize everything adds up to a whole. If -- and I realize this is a big if given the debate going on right now -- something is deemed to not work, I don't think you leave bad content in just because you can justify it as not necessary.

The mini-game IS akin to a deleted scene tucked away, just a bit more important for stat increases and character development.

It's funny when people defend "artistic vision" when it was probably like this:

NoA: "Hey this shit is weird, can we remove it?"
Artist: "lol yeah sure."

I guess BiggNife's prediction came true then about GG making a petition to get her fired. They really are so thinly veiled.

Im sorry, are we in reddit or neogaf?

The fundamental nature of creating something with a large group of people is not censorship.

But there are differing levels of localization, and those gray areas are where a discussion is had.

For example, earlier in the thread I brought up Vivian in TTYD. She was localized into being a cis girl, because the original intent of the character wasn't offensive, and it was determined that Vivian was offensive in her original form. Now personally, I would have preferred that she be localized in a way that is more faithful to the original text, even if that wouldn't have gone over as well with western audiences. It is arguable, in that circumstance, that the intent of the original character was lost through localization.

That's why there is such pushback to large alterations. Because sometimes localization does not always know best, and some people disagree.

Maybe we just think it's stupid. It's you people who must make this about being offended.

You're not offended, but you're ecstatic content you like is cut to the detriment of several people that find it inoffensive or outright like it.

Do you know how that sounds?

So GG-senpai noticed you? I hope you don't get death and rape threats now. I guess I shouldn't be surprised they're looking at Gaf. They hate us afterall. And every once in a while very Gater esque people get banned from here still. They wear it as some badge of pride. Bunch of weirdos. And that's the nicest thing I could say about them. But let's not give them the attention.

Path of Radiance Maniac Mode. another difficulty mode. I don't why it got cut.
Radiant Dawn had lots of script cut because of a strange situation with the diffuclty modes, in fact the West version had one less difficulty mode as well, but i cant remember the details.
