When I decide not to walk up to an attractive girl at the gym and tell her she has nice tits, is that "censorship"?
What?
The funny thing is, you going way out into left field backfires. Yes, that is self-censorship. We do it all the time in daily life... we might say curse words all the time around friends, but watch out mouth around mom. That's self-censoring our behavior. It's extremely common [as in, everyone does it] to act differently in different situations and those that don't self-censor would come across incredibly socially awkward.
So, yes. The next time you notice a girl has really 'nice tits' as you so eloquently put it, and thankfully decide to keep your mouth shut... you self-censored because you know saying that would most likely negatively impact you [or someone else]. The direct comparison would be a drunk jerk who doesn't self-censor and actually tells the woman that.
Censorship is a very broad term, despite some in here trying to pretend it only applies in very specific circumstances [namely, government intervention].
If you want references:
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/self-censorship
Oxford dictionary:
self-censorship
Syllabification: self-cen·sor·ship
Pronunciation: /ˈˌself ˈsensərˌSHip/
Definition of self-censorship in English:
noun
The exercising of control over what one says and does, especially to avoid castigation: a climate of self-censorship, fear, and hypocrisy
Or, if you simply google self censorship, google puts up the wiki definition at the top of your search results:
Self-censorship is the act of censoring or classifying one's own blog, book, film, or other forms of media. This is done out of fear of, or deference to, the sensibilities or preferences (actual or perceived) of others and without overt pressure from any specific party or institution of authority.
"Other forms of media" would include simple speech.
Regardless of your position on this Nintendo issue, it
does fall under the definition of censorship. Trying to claim words don't apply because you don't want them to apply is problematic for obvious reasons - especially when it involves insulting those who use the word properly [not sure if you did this, but others in this thread have].
