Pokemon Game Appreciation Thread

I love me some pokemon! Too bad I don't have the right amount of time to properly sink into the series any more, I used to be so into the meta game :-(

I liked this little guy:

You begin with the cuteness.

And end with the power.

That would be awesome, but I don't think that elemental triangle is as easy to understand for children as fire/water/grass is.

That's not even a proper triangle. Dark nullifies Psychic instead of just resisting it.

I was at the E3 when the first announced Pokemon. I'd previously heard a bit of the game because Nintendo Power had a short little blurb about "Pocket Monsters" in a section about overseas RPGs, but the set up they had at the E3 was amazing. They had this display case with models of every single Pokemon in it, and this giant freaking pokeball above it that would open every hour and shower the crowd with pokemon toys - about a dozen different stuffed Pokemon dolls that could be folded up into a pokeball like Popple (showing my age there). Still have them somewhere.

By the third day of the show, after everybody figured out what was going on, it was a madhouse in the Nintendo booth. They must have given away thousands of those stuffed toys. I'd never be so completely blown away by an E3 showing before or since. Needless to say, when the game came out, we were first in line.

Usually, something that is really stupidly popular in Japan doesn't translate to Western audiences, but that day, I know the Nintendo people must've been sitting back shaking each other's hand as they watched a thirty-five year old man crawl over five people to get his Mewtwo doll and complete his collection.

I think what he was trying to say that, in general, the first 151 are A LOT better than the rest.

No. My Mexican Pineapple (Ludicolo) + stalling meta-game of R/S/E say "Sup," and "LOL FIRST GEN IS NOT GOOD THIS GENERATION!" (Hell, I think Gen 1 is nerfed even more in Gen 4, Mewtwo causing all this nerfing)

Also: Since we're posting lists.

1) Charmander
2) Charizard
3) Blastoise
4) Venusaur
5) Eevee
6) Flareon (the red-headed step-child of the Eevee lines. Hasn't gotten a buff since Gen 1. :()
7) Umbreon
8) Espeon
9) Ludicolo
10) Celebi/Mew/Mewtwo (tie between these three)

Pokemon is definitely one of my favorite series. No matter how many times I play through the games, there's just something so satisfying about the gameplay system. Though Ev training really is a pain in the neck.

My Top Mons (in no particular order)

Heracross is the SHIT, though I wish he were just a pure Bug type, and not part Fighting. Megahorn, combined with his beastly Attack stat would OHKO a lot of Psychic types, but most Psychic types are fast, and can murder Heracross first. Not to mention that there still isn't a great pure Bug type yet, and certainly not one that's a good all-out Attacker. Pinsir is the closest, but he's nowhere near as good as Heracross.

Since everybody else is doing it, ma favourite Pokeymanz design-wise:

I think I prefer my Pokeymanz designs simpler. None of this Digimon bullshit of Gen III and IV.

Scyther is pretty badarse, but he still doesn't compare to the elegance of the red demon.

My favorite pokemon, top five, would have to be...
Venusaur
Scizor
Lugia
Gengar
Dragonite

Eh. Narrowing it down to a top five is pretty hard. Most of those, besides Venusaur, would probably depend on the mood I'm in.

For gen five, I'd say...

3D [it's gotta happen sooner or later; I'm tired of the style they use, at least out-of-battle]
No HMs [replace Surf with a raft, that kinda thing, or give some Pokémon, like Flying, could naturally be able to escort the trainer]
Co-op multiplayer! [I'm assuming the DS 2 will be set up in a way that would allow for a good co-op adventure]
Fully customizable characters [why are we forced to have only two options? It's harder to immerse myself; I can create my own team, but it'll always be the team of one of these two characters]
Alternate paths [why not be able to play as a rival character instead? :D]

Your alternate paths are 4 different Pokemon games, plus the ability to take any 6 you want with you.

I just can't allow any denial of that, looking at how many times I replayed each game.

What the fuck, where's the Bulbasaur love you monsters? #1 and the best Pokemon ever.

Urg, as much as I still love Pokemon I wish it wasn't as 4Kids as it has become. The originals were perfect and still had some 'brutal' stuff to them like the whole notion of dead pokemon, cubone in general, poaching was a bigger deal and all that other good stuff. The ones since Ruby haven't really touched this at all, and if they did it was very brief and vague. I guess its a sign of the times though, I mean now a days you have people crying over griefing in online games; its gets into the 'news' and is called rape.
Hand-drawn and inked designs are why the original and silver/gold era pokemon will always be superior to the new age pokemon. There is literally no comparison between the two, the older ones have charm coming out the wazoo, look at that fucking Cubone and tell me you don't feel sorry for it. I couldn't give a fuck about any of this new clinical, focus group pokemon to be honest, as cool as some of them look.
Am I wrong? I'll fight over this. :lol

You're wrong and corrupted by rose-tinted glasses. Sugimori is Sugimori, hand drawn or not. And personally I feel that gen one had some the most unimaginative Pokemon designs of all the sets overall. The creative designs didn't really start coming en masse until gen two.

You have to agree though, regardless of visual design, gen 1 still had the best backgrounds. The Pokemon that fit well into the canon of the series, like Drifloon, have really awesome backgrounds. Without exception (well there are a few), gen 1's Pokemon universally fit there. Not because they're magically better but because they were there first and shaped our view of the universe.

And it's not really that the number of Pokemon with good backgrounds declined, but that those with horrible ones rised. Deoxys and the space/time bullshit with Dialga and Palkia, what the fuck. Where's the Ho-Oh that gives life to Pokemon or the three beasts that are a direct result of that?

It´s a shame. You have such great music, and when you look at the actual in-game combat, it´s static as hell. I´d want some kind of advanced action-skill element for combat. Something that allows for surprise. After all, the battles shown in the anime are almost all finished with some kind of "where did he pull that one out?!"-desperation attack, not by sheer power.
Would be nice if that philosophy could be translated into the games at one point.

And count me in the "more customization"-group. There´s no reason at all not to let you create your whole own trainer. (make Pokemon also customizable and show it in battle :P).

I do agree that the quality of design (both visually and otherwise) for the legendaries has been a slow decline since the beginning. Every thing else is a toss-up.

Gen II had the worst starters and overall selection. Fewest number of new Pokemon, least number of interesting designs, and too many baby Pokemon forms that could have been devoted to cool new shit.

I don't see how this isn't the best Pokemon design of all time. It's not even rose-tinted, I'm looking at it now and it still rocks.
I'm just a sucker for hand-drawn art honestly, show me a Sugimori drawn old school and I'll probably agree with you.
I disagree on creativity point to some extent though, for every 'creative' pokemon there is at least two pre-evolutions and tacked on evolutions to older pokemon. That shit doesn't count at all, Magmortar...please.

If you can't surprise your opponent, that's your problem, not the game's.

My favorite type of KO comes from my hail team in doubles. My Abomasnow is scarfed (speed boost) and is more offensively-oriented than most. More than once on PBR random battles, I've pulled out a surprise 1-hit KO against opposing Kyogre (powerful water-type legendary) with Abomasnow's Wood Hammer, and then used Aboma's teammate to Roar him off of the field, resetting his scarf (thus preventing him from being locked into using Wood Hammer indefinitely) and bringing another one of my teammates into play instantly, all in 1 turn.

More than once, the opponent has just been completely befuddled and runs out the clock trying to decide his next move. I like to imagine that he's just sitting there in disbelief thinking to himself, "That guy just Roared his own Pokemon! WTF?"

Okay, that sounds nice. Still, what I mean is: You just have 4 attacks, no matter what. So that´s just too limited to really surprise your opponent in the last part of a battle.

The first 2 gens are closed off from the last two.

Edit: Well there you go.

Wah, sorry to bring this up again, but: Is it only red and blue and gold and silver that´s cut off, or is it also the same for Fire Red and Leaf Green? If so I´d just get the remakes. But if they´re cut off from the latest gen, too, I´ll just have fun with the original.

You have 4 attacks out of 40 or more possible ones. While it's possible to reduce that to a number of likely attacks that a Pokemon may be carrying depending on its species or what role it seems to be performing in a given team, that still leaves a lot of possibilities, and successful prediction is rarely a sure thing.

You can transfer Pokemon from RSE/FRLG to DPPt/HGSS. However, you have to beat the DS game before you can transfer GBA Pokemon over, and you can only transfer 6 per day. (This is how it was in DPPt. Not sure if it's different for HGSS.)

The mother dies because of poaching.

Wait...whoa...is that true? Not the poaching part, I remember that. About Cubones really being baby Kangaskhans.

And yes, Sixfortyfive is right. I've had plenty of wtf faces from online fights in D/P. Hopefully the same for people i've faught, and knocked out crazy powerful stuff with Floatzel.

A little, tiny change I'd like to propose for Gen 5. Nothing game changing. Just a minor thing.

I love these guys. Really I do. Okay, maybe not Golbat, but that's neither here nor there. Point is, can the devs please stop putting them in damn near EVERY cave? I mean, they can make in new bird and normal type near the start of the game for every gen, but four gens in I'm still fighting these dudes over and over? Come on guys. Or at least stop making them appear 90% of the time.

It's just a fan theory, the Cubone and baby Kengaskhan sprites in that image are fan made too.

And whats worse is Zubat and Golbat always are common so you will be walking around then "PAAHAHRASHSHSAHS" and your like "BLOODY BATS!"

There's already tons of customizability in terms of the pokemon with moves, ev's and iv's. Trainer customizing would be nice but please, don't tell them to fuck up the core gameplay which is exactly what you would seem to want.

The only shiny Pokemon I have ever come across was a shiny Zubat. That just shows how ridiculously common Zubat is.

Just give me an idle animation and attack animation during fights. Doesnt have to be elaborate, but something more than a static picture. Something like Dragon Quest IV-VI DS where the enemies have idle fighting/breathing animations, then maybe one or two quick attack animations depending on the skill type (breath, punch, slash, etc.).

I can't really stand turned based JRPGs anymore though I am considering picking up Heart Gold when it comes out just for old times sake.

The Pokemon game I most want to see though is a sequel to the Pokemon Trading Card game that originally appeared on the Gameboy. I loved playing it back in the day, along with the actual card game. I also played Magic back in the day (and enjoyed the XBLA game despite how limited it was), but Pokemon was the first TCG I ever played and still my favorite.

Nintendo could even make it a DSi exclusive and I would buy a DSi just so I could play it. Anyone else want to see the TCG in videogame forum again?

Love the games. Despite the cutesy artwork there is a fantastic and deep RPG hidden underneath. Got the Blue version back in 1999 and was hooked for a few months. Even got the strategy guide, but lost that one somehow.

So many fond memories of this game. I intend to go back in when Soul Silver releases.

Er-hem!
There's a lot for me to be proud of inside, and outside, this home...
But what makes me most proud is my trophy garden in the back!
Why bother traveling afar when Pokémon are attracted by my garden?
They come to me in hopes of seeing the garden!

Well, doesn't that make you envious? You are envious, yes?
Muhohoho... I bet you are! I knew you would be!
But I don't mind! I enjoy sharing my stories with you!

So, when I go into my prized trophy garden, Pokémon come running to me.
They sidle up, as happy as they can be to see me!

Well, doesn't that make you envious? You are envious, yes?
Muhohoho... I bet you are! I knew you would be!
But I don't mind! I enjoy sharing my stories with you!

So! This is what happened this morning when I went into my trophy garden.
I noticed a cute-eyes JIGGLYPUFF, which joyously ran over to me.
The JIGGLYPUFF ran up and gave me a smooch on my cheeck...
!!
M-Master!
Th-that Pokémon you mentioned... it doesn't exist in the garden...
!!
Wha...
Erm...
Wh-what are you saying? I'm no blowhard!
Listen... mutter, mutter... whisper, whisper...

I just wanted to post some love for the Shinx line in Pearl/Diamond. Was instantly one of my favourite Pokemon the second I met it. Every time I play, Shinx is my first catch, and one of the few 'mon to stay with me until the end of the game.

I hope you guys are happy, this damn thread has made me want to play Pokemon again. The only question now is, restart Leafgreen or Sapphire (both of which I have raided all my Pokemon off of and onto diamond). Or just try and train some random pokes in Diamond.

Also, you've already did some shoutouts to Pokemon I like (Blastoise, Cacturne, Luxray, that new badass street-shark-dragon-thing that I've forgotten the name of), but let me also give some love to:
68wlg2.png

I've never understood the Gen II love/Gen III hate. I'm almost the exact opposite. I despise a lot of the Johto pokemon designs and love most of the Hoenn ones. How anyone chan hate:

is beyond me.

Gold/Silver and Crystal also felt unfinished. Johto was ridiculously small and Kanto was a shell of its former self. The endgame felt similarly non-existent. Emerald On the other hand, seemed like it would never run out of things for you to do. Between Gym rematches, Pokemon contests, hordes of legendaries and the Battle Frontier, it always felt like there was something new to do.
