A little look back on the year of translated light novels.
Releases jumped from 18 in 2014 to 49 in 2015. Quite a jump that. Hopefully it can keep growing. Especially if Japan wants to crack down on fan translations.
I probably got half of those 49.
Really appreciate the effort publishers make in bringing this stuff over. Now I just hope for some more diversified/niche series to get translated, since LNs seem to prove doing well across the globe.

Hopefully more and more of them get digital releases too. I'm not in the USA and shipping + the strong dollar can raise the prices to an obscene amount for me. However I've been keeping up with the digital versions of Durarara because I can find them at a decent price on local web stores.

Me too. I have no interesting in owning physical copies as well so my buying is pretty limited. Its a shame Yen only puts out a subset digitally rather than all the stuff they release.

I'd like to see some of the non LN stuff happening to that line up with what the LN audience would read. Like the book Eccentric Family is based on and its sequel(s).
I'm still quite early on the Kizumonogatari novel, around page 100, but it's fantastic. It's my very first light novel and I love it, but I guess I already loved the series. lol I was pretty surprised that I could found this, let alone almost at the same time as its release in US.
Anyway, do we know if Vertical plan to release the rest of the novels? If so, would Bakemonogatari's first part releasing on 2016 be possible? I really, really want to get my hands on these books.
I just finished Kizu, what a book. I hoped that it would be enough to keep me until the movie, but now I want to watch the Kizu movie even more. lol Translation seemed great, I have no idea if there was more wordplay in the original though.
I surely hope that this is the case. It seems to do well and there's still demand from my understanding. The shop that brought them in my country is out of stock right now (though I doubt they had ordered more than a dozen or two) and they seem to have a lot of orders for when they restock. I'm surprised that it even took so long for the series to get an English release.
Anyone know what the quality of the Rakudai Kishi no Calvarly Light Novels are like? I take it that they haven't been translated yet. The anime itself was pretty surprising in that on the face it was just a typical harem ecchi anime, but parts of the fights and plot wasn't bad.
Almost forgot to mention that I got my first couple of Light Novels as Christmas Gifts.
Devil is a Pat Timer 1-3
Haruhi Book 1 Hardcover

oh right, I actually finished another volume of something weeks ago
Finished Vamp! Vol.2
still really enjoying this series, while it probably doesn't help I spent months reading this, I really do enjoy Narita's writing in the characters, narrative and world building
The shifts in focus to Mr. Watermelon, Armor, Milkah and the Mayor was nice having a different perspective on what's happening on the island
Now, I wonder how long until I actually start and finish a new volume of something else

I liked what I've read. Its what got me interested in the anime (even if LN anime tends to strip everything out aside from the ecchi). I wouldn't call it a harem though, even the anime. That was in fact its standout point for a school battle story.
The main character has a harem of several girls in love with him, the fact that he also has a relationship with one of them doesn't change that. The series just tries to have its cake and eat it too. It's as much of a harem as SAO is.

I mean, there's the sister who's acknowledged his relationship and some side character who doesn't seem to be too important in the novels that have been translated so far outside of the volume she appeared in. That's not really the same as a setup where a bunch of girls are constantly fighting over an intentionally non-committal protagonist.
If any scene like that did happen, Ikki would probably just end it right away by telling the non-Stella girl to stuff it.

Having read 15 volumes of SAO , i'm convinced that it's not a harem.
Considering the turn that rakudai takes after the anime ended , i'm also conviced that the harem part of this is non - existant.
Having a cast of girls within a franchise doesn't automatically makes it an harem.
So far in the Rakudai Kishi no Calvary anime only Stella wants to jump his bones. His sister is the only contender but hasn't gotten very far if she even wants to.
The girl he trained likes him but I don't see her pursuing him.
So far School President just wanted to fight him, kinda like how Goku wants to fight a strong opponent.
Now a Harem would be Testament or High School DxD.
About Sao
Not :" are in love" but " were in love ".
All of them have backed off when the winner was decided. At best they were challengers.
Everyone except asuna failed. As of vol16 , they have all disapeared from the freaking plot.( Correction as of volume 8)
A harem when only the winner is interracting with the MC is not a harem.
For more than half of the written story, this "harem" haven't even got an appearance, a thought , a citation from the source material My conclusion is that it's not a harem
About rakudai
In the anime there are really 4 girls.
-1 who was helped by the MC to retrieve his father dojo, totally disapear from the plot and isn't even remotely intrested in him.
- 1 who was the Studen concil president , was also never intrested in the guy in the first place , except as rival or fellow sword-users
- The sister that was intrested but totally isn't taken seriously because ....
-The MC girlfriend , winner by default , The MC fought against society to claim in front of the TV/world that he loved her and they entered a relationship. They enjoy Dates, sightseeing and various thing together ( not kidding )

So I'm reading the first Durarara!! novel and I like it, even though it's a bit sloppy. I also know that this is a decade old series and it'll take forever for all the books to come out over here in English, so how's the anime? Does it adapt a lot of the books? Would it be better and less time consuming to get into that?

Are the Kokoro Connect books good? Until which volume are they translated? I found the first 2 volumes in a shop and Book Depository seems to have everything till vol. 5.

Finally managed to finish another LN. This time No Game No Life Volume 3.
Translation/writing improved several levels from total shit to somewhat tolerable. Izuna as a character was kinda okay, but her speech pattern made her rather obnoxious. Other than that, it was entertaining. Less lewdness (although still lots of it and of the usual, somewhat questionable brand) and more mind games is a good thing. The whole werebeasts setup, the insights into Sora through Chlammy and the finale with the holy shrine maiden definitely added a lot of depth to the series.
Well as for me i read the chinese to english translation of
"Descent of the Phoenix: 13 Years Old Princess Consort "
I especially like female lead in stories , especially if they're smart and the cast is interesting.
The manga ( mangwa ? ) is actually fruther ahead in the translation so i've read both but the novel is actually better because it does give you much more contest on the political aspect of the story.
For those intrested it's 50% politics, 35% sweet love story,15% fights
But politics during ancient china are never boring.
-----------------------------
Also in my country i finally managed to find a way to get kizumonogatari without having to pay too much , let's hope it's half good as i think it is , given by the praise everyone has showered this entry.
Finished The Devil Is a Part-Timer Volume 2.
Still the best written englisch LN.
Still with the most boring plot of them all.
The humor's there, the characters are endearing, although rather flat, and even some scenes are rather tense, but the overall setup and workings in the background just aren't as interesting to me. Still works as an entertaining Slice Of Life, just questionable how sustainable that is over a large amount of volumes without some serious change in the overall story structure.

I've been reading Mushoku Tensei lately, I'm up to around halfway through volume 8 and it's somewhat fun to read, but it's seriously dragging. (A few spoilers below)
The biggest problem is that there's a steady noticeable drop in quality from volume to volume. The beginning was quite fresh because the story starts off with the unique concept of the main character reincarnating into a different world and learning to let go of his previous life's negative characteristics and start anew. His growth from a baby to a young child in volume 1 was great, but I swear each volume has gotten worse and worse. The story has gotten pretty dull with no real objective or goal for Rudeus, and all of the supporting characters are shallow as hell with the exception of maybe Eris and Ruijerd. Even those two are only decent because more than half the series so far has featured them.
It's really disappointing, actually. Vol 1 had Rudeus learning the ropes of magic and experimenting with it. At 5 years old he achieves the rank of a Saint class. 10 years later, even after joining the Magic Academy, he's still the same rank.
The characters after Eris and Ruijerd leave the party are just outright crap, and I have no idea why the author focuses so much time on them. Elinalise for one, she has absolutely no redeeming factors and I'm not even sure why there's so much time spent on her. She's a crude character and literally exists for fanservice, what with her
having sex with 5 guys at once... and she sleeps around with guys every single day. Yup, that's her one and only trait that she's a nymphomaniac
. I had high hopes for the Magic Academy arc, but so far it's complete trite and the author continues on with mundane happenings.
Even Rudeus is getting pretty boring. Author for some reason constantly needs to reaffirm that he's a "calm, cool character that always solves things logically". We already know. Stop telling us. Also, idk if this is necessarily the author's fault or if it's the translation but he's a bit unskilled at painting the settings in the story with words.
And the world map he drew to explain how the different continents look was seriously, seriously UGLY
Oh well, I'll keep reading with reduced expectations.
Well all of your complains will be adressed and even told by the MC himself later.
The world map has been remade properly ...the bad one was something done very quickly in the web version and never updated to answer some fan questions
Elianise starts really badly but get so much better , give her some time.
For the couple of months, I've been reading this on the way to and from work, and finally caught up to the latest published entry.
The first five books were amazing, with lots of memorable moments. I thought the series (understandably) started to slow down a bit as its scope grew larger.
I liked seeing the characters progress from their introductions in the first book to a solid cast of characters. (In the first book, Guiche almost murders Saito. During this time, the principal and staff just stand by without intervening. Kirche is a bully, along with most of the grade. Louise treats Saito more like an animal than a human, while Saito pretty much mercilessly taunts her and pulls a "prank" that has Louise fall down a flight of stairs. Yikes.)
I enjoyed the setting well enough. On the whole, the work struck a good balance between action, romance, comedy, and exposition. The writing was straightforward but somewhat repetitive (for example, the first ten books endlessly repeated the same description of Louise's pink hair, brown eyes.)
My favourite part of the series might be Louise's and Saito's internal monologues -- at times reflective and mature, other times lively and hilarious -- they really gave the characters their own voices. It won't be the same without Yamaguchi writing them : (
Didn't like how the series handled some of the supporting female cast (
Henrietta, Tabitha, Tiffania
being the main examples.) They all had interesting back stories and characterization, I didn't feel like they needed to be
tacked on to Saito's harem. We also get some of the worst POVs with monologues about their uncontrollable attraction to Saito and subsequent guilt.
Likewise, Saito's inability to resist any girl's advances was disappointing.
I felt that the series got carried away sometimes with sexual humour, to the point that it took up an entire book (12) to the exclusion of any plot development.
Looking forward to seeing how the story ends.
Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai (I have no clue how to translate this)
In book 1 of the Seishun Buta Yarou series, protagonist Sakuta Azusagawa chances upon a wild bunny girl at the library (Mai Sakurajima, former idol, and senpai/person-of-interest at his highschool.) When he discovers that she is becoming invisible to everyone but himself, he decides to help her find out how to reverse the phenomenon. Romantic comedy drama ensues.
Boy meets attractive girl with supernatural affliction? After watching Bakemonogatari, I think I can predict how this series is going to go.
Sakuta only has two friends and he talks to them like twice a month. This is hitting a bit too close to home.
There's not much to complain about the writing, but nothing really stood out as very well-written either.
I really like the illustrations (by Mizoguchi Keiji), but I don't know if I'm interested enough in the writing to continue with the series.
I need something new to read during my commute now : ( I wish Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files or Sound! Euphonium were available on Kindle.
Yes, I heard the news in 2013. MediaFactory announced that they'll be releasing a continuation this month based on Yamaguchi's notes, so the story will be finished.

This light novel is dope because the protagnist is overpowered mentally understanding the grind that is to come...
Normally I won't post a spoiler because I assume you see the chapter and know to not read the post...
Hansoo
ABOUT TO WRECK SHIT.
FINALLY, HE GETS TO GO OFF on Taesoo and hopefully Giltate as well. IMHO, he should've been a lone wolf from the start but he had to keep his promise to Eres. He needs to crush the ants quickly before the war starts.
Somehow or another, this novel has gotten worse. Is that even possible? I thought there would be no where to go but up as the story was seriously dragging by the time Rudeus first entered the Magic Academy.
I'll highlight a few of the notable things that have happened and my take on them.
1. Rudeus Marriage
This came straight out of left field. He literally did not give it a second thought before deciding to marry Sylphy. His reasoning was "She's so nice and cute and I respect her, therefore I'm going to marry her". Shouldn't a protagonist's marriage have a little more value? Wait, no the author obviously doesn't care about that as you'll see in a bit...
Also, their relationship barely has any strength or realism to it, and seems to entirely hinge on Rudeus's sexual interests. Entire chapters were dedicated to how he's so fond of her small tits and doesn't mind that she's tiny. The fuck, man.
2. Rudeus's development
Is this guy ever going to change/grow up? He's literally been the same person since volume 1. It does not feel like his character has matured in any way at all. His inner monologues and thought patterns are the same as ever and has gotten stale. His perverted routine of constantly commenting on girls sexually has gotten boring, and he always presents himself as a 'cool, logical and humble' person.
3. Laughable tragedy
Paul dies. While barely leaving an impact. Actually, you could see this coming from a mile away. Rudeus's travel through Begaritto was literally Let's go from point A to Point B and go through a dungeon that the readers are already familiar with and rescue Zenith. There's simply no excitement to the story, because it is so generic and doesn't take risks.
4. Marries... twice... this time to Roxy????
What the fuck, this is so fucking stupid. No, seriously, wut? I thought Roxy was one of the few characters I could respect, but no. Every character in this novel is literally a caricature. This is the author's demented self-insert sexual fantasy. Fuck this shit, I'm out.
How the hell does this have a 9/10 rating on Mangaupdates? One of the HIGHEST rated novels on the site. Oh, and I'm going to say it again. The author is seriously mediocre at writing the settings that take place in the novel. Man, I really hope I can stumble upon another LN as good as Zero no Maria...
The 9/10 note is from people who have read everything perhaps ?
Sure you might not like this turn of events right now , but i'm quite certain that people who have read everything like it.( at least much more than you right now )
There wouldn't have been so much DRAMA about the translation when it was done if this was a mediocre story..
So either continue and see why people like it or drop it and wonder for the rest of your life.
Now to answer your complains :
Sylphy was someone that he was clearly interested from the start .. the fact that she contributed to heal "that" ..something that was the cause of many of his problems only improved the deal.
Rudeus is not someone who sleep with everyone... that's how the character is. "in his words , he will take responsability"
Your childhood friend not only cures you but is still devoted to you after all those years and you think that he would let this pass for what reason ? After failing to score Anything in this previous life , you'd think he would hesitate ? Wouldn't make sense at all.
Paul death left no impact ? Did you read the story. ? He lost his father, something that clearly affected him mentally and he lost an arm as a result . What's more his mother can't speak and appears to have regressed mentally.
What part of this sequence of events left NO IMPACT ?
And what's the problem with Roxy again ? Did you forget the part where Elianise obviously played a big role in all of this by putting everyone in that specific direction ?
Or is the part where roxy was trapped in a deadly maze for more than a month with no supllies and was rescued in the nick of time meaninngless ? Because it's most certainly isn't.
And since when paul death could be seen a miles away ? up to that point nobody of importance died.. at this point in the story the only characters that died where some dudes in the starting town and that's it ? what made this predictable again ? where was the forshadowing for those events ? like hell it was predictable.
