Street Fighter V Beta IV Thread: Jan 30-31

Yeah, it's dumb.

Really screws over players who don't win much (which I'm sure is a lot).

Its fair since this is real money on the line for Capcom. Their only form of income in the future is going to be costumes and characters. They just can't make it easy to earn them.

I played for a few hours, got an 9 win streak going, not bad for someone who hasn't played a fighting game in over a year. Overall I am pretty disappointed, don't get me wrong, I think the game is pretty fun. It's just that I expected this game to be able to jump start me getting back into fighting games after quitting the genre. I just thought I would like this game a lot more than I thought I would, I just feel like something is missing from this game.

With proper match-making (and a sufficiently large community), you should still be winning ~50% of your matches, even if you are terrible at the game. The larger community thanks to cross-play will hopefully help make that happen.

Doesn't matter. It's the psychological effect. If someone takes a loss they can get pretty upset, then they'll get discouraged even more seeing that they get no points for time invested.

Except getting points for losses is pretty much a standard in this model. It shouldn't be any big amount, but enough to reward the player for investing time in the game.

GUYS:

Am i the only one getting slowdowns on the VS screen whenever i match up with someone?

i have an fps counter and im a solid 60 fps constantly until the vs screen comes up then it dips to 30 fps and slows down all the way until the round 1 FIGHT message comes on, then goes 60 fps during regular playing.

Yeah! Finally got a chance to play SFV! lol

I missed the other betas due to other commitments so I was geeked all day at work today and just had a quick go before I head out. I got matched into a casual game that loaded pretty damn quick with another PS4 player I guess in France? (at least that was the region they selected). Game looks beautiful and was surprised at how smooth and fast it played mainly because I'd just been watching YT videos and Twitch streams.

...I lost though. Third and final round and the player missed me with his critical but I countered with Ryu's but my slither of health couldn't take the heavy kick. :(

My personal rule for sfv is, stop watching combo videos. and for every 10 mins of research, play for an hour. I read up far too much for IV, and got nowhere.

Not even - the best thing you can do to improve your game is to watch your matches after playing for an hour. It's really hard to process your mistakes when you're playing. Watching match footage will give you the exact idea as to what you would lose to, what situations you were more favorable in, etc.

I had a similar issue when playing earlier today in one match. Basically, immense slow down when connecting to the other player (even in the loading screen right before the match!). Then, once the match actually started, the lag was gone. However, between rounds, when neither player had control, the slowdown would return. Very odd, and the only bad connection i've had all day.

They should be more motivated to get better.

That's a really good point, thanks :)

EDIT - Just played a Cammy called RedPandaSneak and starting to wonder if it was you xD

The difference is that in other games the only way you can get currency is through playing matches while here you can also get it from single player stuff and daily challenges.

I am very curious to see how Capcom implements Daily Challenges. I liked what Halo Reach did but not sure how it would work here.

Also just hoping against hope for a real league/ladder system based around this league points thing but we'll see.

Daily challenges? I'm in. Of course, that's only as long as they aren't "Win 10 games in a row". I still don't have that trophy on SF IV :(

I believe this is the first time I've ever actually noticed it. Haven't really had much experience with the Saturn and PSP.

When I first played it last year at Evo
, the dithering was the first thing that hit me.

Funny how mortal kombat x looks so much cleaner and better and it's using unreal engine 3. I promise you this game looks like crap because it's not a huge dev team, rushed, and focus on mechanics over gameplay.

Honestly this game could easily be mistaken for ps3

Yeah it's like dots or lines, it's really weird. I don't know the technical term and I have no idea how that would free up resources. It's not a deal breaker but I hope it isn't in the actual copy of the game.

It's called Dithering. Guarantee it'll be there if it hasn't been fixed by now.

Just had my first real experience with SFV in beta form (after many missed opportunities due to scheduling). I'm happy to say that my first impressions are more positive than what I experienced with IV. Movement feels more snappy and more akin to the old sprite-based games, especially the jumping. In IV these always felt off to me, like too floaty or something, while overal character movement felt a tad sluggish.

That said, I nearly lost all my matches despite playing what I would deem quite decent (as in that I tried to use actual spacing and a variety of moves to keep my opponent guessing), most of them due to my opponent using what seems to be easy to repeat but hard to defend against (for me) loops of moves like R. Mika's grab and throw into corner move or Vega and Dhalsim's ground slides or arial shennanigans. Frustrating beyond belief I must admit and it was putting me on the edge of my seat in a bad way. As such I wonder again how much actual playing fun I will get from this game compared to how much I'd rather watch others play it (as ended up being the case with IV).

I'll finish up with some general thoughts on the flow of combat compared to older SF's: When I play II or III, for some reason it feels as if those games have a unique flow to them, a combat rhythm if you will that is supplemented by sound effects etc. III especially always felt to me like I was actually street brawling, with sweeps, jumps and lots of close quarters attack exchanging happening in a graceful pace. With IV I never felt this due to the characters being so bulky and big (partly due to the change to 16:9 aspect ratio) and so hard-hitting that I never got this sense of being locked in a continuous ballet of martial arts with the opponent (but rather a series of attacks).

In V it seems a bit better but still not fully there as far as first impressions go. It still feels more like you're hitting someone once or a few times with a short combo before one of you is knocked down or back and the encounter is reset to start over towards a similar outcome. In III you seemed to be able to keep going and recover from a few hits while staying close, while in II it seemed that the fight would keep flowing at each distance. Maybe I'm just going nuts or never fully grapsed them, but IV and V seem to be lacking both of these types of flow in favor of IV style hard-hitting up close and creating distance again to try doing that again. I'll definitely stick with V as I have it pre-ordered like a loyal fan, but I do fear the wordt in some ways. Feel free to offer comment.

Nah, you da GOAT

Lol I wasn't implying that at all, even though it could be seen that way. I haven't picked up sf in a couple years, and I assumed that people in the beta would be a bit more hardcore. Well at least the majority. I was, in an albeit roundabout way, asking if they level of play is a bit on the higher end of the spectrum based on previous betas.

EDIT: Or better yet, do they try to mach you based on your current rank? I just realized you have ranks. If that's the case then my post was rather silly to begin with. So sorry about the poor communication.

Not to brag or anything, but I'm feeling invincible right now. After losing my first three matches which came when I was trying out Laura for a bit, I then switched to my main girl, Karin, and haven't lost since. And, so far, I've got a 13 win streak and two perfects. Her high-low game is strong as hell and she's got some great pokes, enough tools to open up unsuspecting players when cornered. Don't know if she's a top tier character, but on a low-medium level of play, she's wrecking. Maybe on a high level play she becomes too telegraphed, though.

Anyways, having a BLAST with this. Hoping to take this streak even further during this beta and I can't wait for the full release!

Just got that glitch where you can hear ryu's heavy breathing after you knock him out.

Kinda creepy D:

I got a glitch where it registered a dizzy, but only due to lag, so for the rest of the round, even though there wasn't an actual dizzy, the sfx kept playing.

Finally getting matches!

Laura feels incredible. It felt nice to beat some Cammy player who had a big win streak.

No fight money on loss is pretty stupid. Something like this could really discourage casual players. You should get something, even if some pity points.

I definitely agree. Capcom doesn't understand much of the casual if they thought it was a smart move.

People want to earn "something" even if it is not much.

Couldn't help but laugh at this Karin's username lol.

She's only bad at first glance. She got nothing but buffs in this beta and she has some really dirty setups.

Don't tell anybody though *wink wink*

lol nice. I think I'm going to try my hand at practicing some Laura next. She's one of the characters that I've never used once yet (or watched much video of, for that matter). All I know is that the majority of my laggy match losses come at the hands of Necalli and Laura players :P

Anyone have any useful links to tips or setups so I can hit the ground jogging?

Okay, I'm fairly new to street fighter and I really want to get into this!!

Generally I like speedy, quick attackers that aren't really based around combination throws or anything like that. Do you guys know which characters might fit that role?
