Just had my first real experience with SFV in beta form (after many missed opportunities due to scheduling). I'm happy to say that my first impressions are more positive than what I experienced with IV. Movement feels more snappy and more akin to the old sprite-based games, especially the jumping. In IV these always felt off to me, like too floaty or something, while overal character movement felt a tad sluggish.
That said, I nearly lost all my matches despite playing what I would deem quite decent (as in that I tried to use actual spacing and a variety of moves to keep my opponent guessing), most of them due to my opponent using what seems to be easy to repeat but hard to defend against (for me) loops of moves like R. Mika's grab and throw into corner move or Vega and Dhalsim's ground slides or arial shennanigans. Frustrating beyond belief I must admit and it was putting me on the edge of my seat in a bad way. As such I wonder again how much actual playing fun I will get from this game compared to how much I'd rather watch others play it (as ended up being the case with IV).
I'll finish up with some general thoughts on the flow of combat compared to older SF's: When I play II or III, for some reason it feels as if those games have a unique flow to them, a combat rhythm if you will that is supplemented by sound effects etc. III especially always felt to me like I was actually street brawling, with sweeps, jumps and lots of close quarters attack exchanging happening in a graceful pace. With IV I never felt this due to the characters being so bulky and big (partly due to the change to 16:9 aspect ratio) and so hard-hitting that I never got this sense of being locked in a continuous ballet of martial arts with the opponent (but rather a series of attacks).
In V it seems a bit better but still not fully there as far as first impressions go. It still feels more like you're hitting someone once or a few times with a short combo before one of you is knocked down or back and the encounter is reset to start over towards a similar outcome. In III you seemed to be able to keep going and recover from a few hits while staying close, while in II it seemed that the fight would keep flowing at each distance. Maybe I'm just going nuts or never fully grapsed them, but IV and V seem to be lacking both of these types of flow in favor of IV style hard-hitting up close and creating distance again to try doing that again. I'll definitely stick with V as I have it pre-ordered like a loyal fan, but I do fear the wordt in some ways. Feel free to offer comment.
