Street Fighter V Beta IV Thread: Jan 30-31

Ok, I swear this is the last time I complain about this game.

I've never got so salty playing anything in my life. I just can't give my opponent any credit when I lose, it always feels like bullshit.

I don't think I can play this game.

Like poker, Street Fighter is a game of introspection. Great poker players can't recall all the times they've won, but they can recall every time they lost. They focus on that, think about how they could have done better, and, eventually, grow as a player. That's pretty much Street Fighter in a nutshell; or any fighting game really.

Wow I just Whiff Punish Ken's Sweep with Charlie's CA. Also Chun-Li is like Top Tier in Online. I can't trade with her sweep. Trying to will always cause a crush counter. Cammy as well, can't see anything what she's doing with the choppy animations.

Also I can't stress enough how much I hate as and against Zangief. Playing as him the SPD have a long start up and loses to normals up close. Playing against Zangief he can max range SPD from the edge of a fucking move long after it's start up frame and win every time.

But that's the problem, this isn't my first rodeo. I played Dudley in Super, the struggle is an old friend of mine, and yet, for whatever reason, this game in particular drives me nuts.

C'mon bro. People aren't going to go running arms open into a Zangief. They're not playing lame, they're just not playing stupid either.

Except when they use a single hit move to pressure on wakeup and get hit by that EX running bear grab :D Such a satisfying move to hit with

I was playing a close match against a Laura and it was down to the wire.

I figured he was going to use the overhead/wheel kick move, so I let him do it for a bit without punishing earlier in the round. Just blocked it and dealt with the pressure as it came.

Then when the last seconds came down to it...Wheel Kick into my EX Run for the close.

In this game I've found I'm doing more holding back and saving good moves for the end. It's kind of fun.

But yeah, Gief has to make his way in more slowly in this game

Yeah. I'm not gonna lie. People playing keep away right now are really the fucking worst. Like come on :/ what is this shit?

I fight like that. Its like being Mayweather, defensive fighting. You make a mistake and you'll have to pay.

I'm a Nash player, laid down these Zangiefs, Ryus, and Kens; by using defensive tactics.

Karins can give me trouble when they juggle me in the air.

I'm with you, I've never been as salty as when I lose in this game. Maybe that's a good thing? I dunno, but it's definitely discouraging me.

Nash really hoses Gief down with just good sonic booms and buttons

Which is why it perplexes me to see Nashes online try to come in with Moonsault recklessly or that jumping punch grab move. They always lose because of it when they had been doing well earlier

Oh man Laura keeps beating the crap out of me. BS mixups and great normals keep me at bay. Also, it's funny seeing the NPCs in the background go crazy due to rollback.

I really dislike playing mirrors in SFV. I kinda wish there was an option of being able to pick a sub character when you are playing a mirror match.

Like if there is a Ryu mirror March, the computer notifies me and ask if I want to pick Ken instead. I don't think Ken is a counter to Ryu, but fuck mirror matches.

That's your first problem. It's only your fault if you lose.

That's not strictly true depending on the character you're playing and the situation.

I don't know enough about this game to use an example, but if you're playing Akuma on Ultra and putting your opponent into a Vortex, where they have 1/3 or less options that get them out safely / beat your approach, then it's not your fault if the odds play against you from to time, and your opponent guesses correctly.

There's an element of probability and risk management involved in the game that renders the statement 'it's only your fault if you lose', not entirely true. If I throw out a light single light kick in the hopes of finishing my opponent, and he happens to catch it with a random super, is that my fault? I don't see it that way. Sometimes you know you did the right thing, but it just doesn't work out, because fundamentally the entire thing isn't in your control.

SF is a game of minimizing risk while you punish your opponent for the risks they take, however, crucially, those risks can only be minimized. Every time you press a button your opponent typically has an answer to it that they could, theoretically press, even if it's a spontaneous DP, or something absurd, you can't guarantee your approach is safe, even when you make the right play. In the grand scheme of things this doesn't make a huge difference and the better player should typically come through anyway, but when a match goes down to the wire, to have one of these instances decide the outcome can create a feeling that the match was not necessarily won by the better player that is not entirely unjustified.

I finished one of my matches earlier feeling that my opponent deserved to win. The game was close, but I threw out Rashid's super on his pressure to close the game. It was a 50/50 at best that decided the matches outcome, and overall, he was playing better than I was throughout.

Worst part about playing Nash is when people fall out of antiair ex sonic scyth on hit & punish you for huge damage. The first part needs to cause hard KD so this doesn't happen. I shouldn't be losing 50% for sucessfully antiairing with an EX move

Oh my god I finally broke that 2K LP wall with Bison, I've been hovering in between 1500-1700 all day and its been extremely frustrating. Never cared for Bison in IV but the changes they've made to him in V have made him an absolute rush down monster, though I think a lot of it is people's unfamiliarity with the matchup. I get away with some horribly unsafe things that will probably stop being as effective after everyone's settled down and gotten used to things.

The Psycho Inferno (ground fire move) is kind of annoying I guess

That's why it felt pretty good to just spd him out of it on reaction :D

It's really unsafe on block so yeah, a lot of things Gief has will just outright kill it after a blocked one.

Here's my latest match, might look like ass since I just uploaded it. Probably my most intense match of the beta so far, I made some good guesses and some bad mistakes. Also the end of the first round...I have no idea what the hell even happened, lol.

You play a really defensive/down-back Bison. Not necessarily a bad thing but basically the antithesis of how I run mine. I find myself relying more on forward dashes until I'm in stMK / stMP range and going from there. My strategy from the outset is to discourage people to press buttons after stMP by linking into crMP for frame trap shenanigans, once I've conditioned them that far I can comfortably do the stMP -> Axe target combo or stMP -> Dash Grab/stHK or stMP -> Whatever -> Headstomp into instant devil's reverse to try to fish for more damage. So I guess my advice would be to find ways to continue the momentum when it's on your side, you seemed to like to default back to the down-back style rather than pressing your advantage and I don't see there being that much benefit to a Bison that does that as Scissors or Headstomp alone aren't stellar neutral devices.

Edit : If you want examples of how I run my Bison just look me up on the Capcom Network, I'll be under DiscoShark

Oh I didn't know that was a thing. I meant I saw him go for it and grabbed him before the flames even came out. The startup is pretty noticeable.

It didn't matter during the match cos I still lost but it was a nice moment

Dude how? Please post some match vids because I'm hurting right now. I feel helpless when I get knocked down with her.
I'll upload some matches now. Just gonna take a little awhile to trim everything.
just broke 1k with her, any tips on Bison matchups? I can't seem to find a good strategy against him

I haven't faced to many so it was a learning experience for me as well, but I just played very patient against them until they threw something out and used normals like st.mk or f.mp to discourage them from hitting buttons.

I feel like some rounds I have the momentum with R. Mika for most of the round then the other person turns up the heat and I lose in seconds because I don't know how to defend against crossups and other stuff with her.

It's just funny how everything feels so 50/50 when I play as her. Some matches I just completely dominate the conversation and others I'm grasping for air.

Well finally had to pack it up. Probably won't be able to play anymore in the rest of the beta.

Got a good 7-8 hours on it and I just fucking love it. It's so much more fun and easier to wrap my head around tham SFIV, and I really loved that game.

I got a lot better with Nash and I love playing him. He will definitely be my main until Guile arrives, and might even overtake him. I really liked what I played of Geif, Rashid, Vega, and Laura too, and I will definitely be spending time with them.

Feb 16th is going to take FOREVER to get here. Cheers if I ended up playing any of you guys!

Once you start blocking on wake up doing reversal ex flying peach between peoples strings really stops there momentum shift. Once you have momentum with Mika you have to hold onto that shit for dear life. She can really steam roll people once you have them scared.

I only played a little bit, like an hour or two and I'm afraid to keep playing too haha.

I want them to release Juri soon though.

it's so annoying I love R Mika's colour scheme, rainbow effects, fighting style + pigtails but that outfit is just

Yeah I usually get hit with something funky on wakeup because it's so hard to see what's coming next. But yeah I've definitely steamrolled some people and it feels great but my consistency isn't there yet. I think she kind of requires two playstyles to play, aggressive when you need to and defensive when playing the neutral game. I feel like I know all her buttons and normals well but I feel like her damage took too much of a hit when they nerfed her.

It was a close fight man.

Low forward and most jabs are momentum killers against Karin.

I just want a tiny bit of a stun or damage increase with her command grab with kicks. I've been in so many situations where it was just off by the slightest amount. I've recently gotten a little better at dealing with projectiles by getting the timing down with cr.hk just right. The character I've been having the most trouble with is Birdie, Cammy, Chun, and Karin.
