After watching the update video, I really don't understand why people have any sort of issues with this. What they seem to be offering is an opportunity to start your own "franchise" of their react series using assets and support from them. They are NOT limiting anyone from making their own reaction style videos completely separate from them. For example the videos I've seen with Korean people reacting to things or people seeing porn for the first time is totally fine. They're not trying to own the "react" genre.

In terms of them taking action against other people's videos, the only examples i've seen are where people repost their videos, or create exact, beat for beat, versions of their videos. That seems legitimate to me.

My sense is that people have a large amount of dislike for these two guys, and that fuels a more knee-jerk negative reaction, but is there something I'm missing?

So taking action against Ellen's video would be considered legitimate to you?

Not a chance in hell that they lose even 1% of their subs in a few days, but considering the rate at which they were gaining subs before I have no doubt they are worried.

Exactly. It's not that they've lost a massive amount of subscribers, it's that their daily growth of 5 - 10k subs has been eliminated completely and reversed. It seems they've lost 25k+ subs just today, and the impact on their credibility and brand likely troubles them too.

I get what they're trying to do but how it got out there and the first impression people had was horribly fucked it and it is going to take some time for this to blow over.

So I just saw all this stuff on Youtube and immediately went to Neogaf. And yes, there was already a thread about it. Of course :)

I've seen this here on Reddit.

This here

I remember, before finebros did an elders react series, I was subscribed to this awesome YouTube channel that did seniors react content. Finebros already did the kids react stuff. One day I visited the channel and found it was closed down due to copyright claim from finebros. 2 weeks later they started their elders react series. I unsubscribed that same day and haven't watched their stuff since

edit:the channel was called "stillcosmo" I think

And this here "Update":

And man.... this is ridiculous.

I really hope this doesn't kill off one of my favorite video series on YouTube called "YouTube Reacts". The title is similar, but the actual video content is pretty different. The videos don't have people reacting to stuff on camera, but instead have people mockingly reading the most terrible and horribly misspelled comments on popular or controversial YouTube videos. I would be so sad if they tried to take them down because they are way more entertaining than The Fine Bros stuff!

Here is an example, one of my favorites: YouTube Reacts to Cosmos

and the whole playlist of all of them is here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAE3324F1A53CA85E

How could they be so tone deaf?

Do they only have yes men in their organization?

If I worked for them, I would've told them that should expect massive backlash because of this and that it's a flat out dumb idea.

Its February the 6th, 2023. Bought my kid Halo 9 for his birthday. Can't wait to give it to him and see his reaction after the FineBros film it.

I get home, and call him over with a flat look on my face. I keep my tone level as I tell him, "here son, I bought you this". His face is unmoving. He was born before the great inertion of 2016, but his school trains him well. He holds out his hands and takes the plainly wrapped box from my hands.

"This present is most welcome" he recites, one of the few FineBros approved responses licensed for non-commercial use by the public. His hands tear off the brown paper, slowly, steadily, without excitement. He sees the present now. A flicker of fear crossed his eyes, I could see it, I'm his father. I know what he's feeling. Shit shit, don't let them see son, don't... My sons eyes dart upwards. Shit, shit, I knew he'd like the present, he's reacting... He holds the case firmly as tears well up in his eyes. I knew I should have fucking got him something else, this is my fault, I knew how much he wanted this game... It's too late. He lets the smile spread across his face for the first time in 7 years. Its beautiful...

The alarms go off, I make sure not to flinch, not to react. I know its only a matter of minutes now before he's taken.

As I let my eyes glaze over and rest on a point safely above his head he drops to the floor and wraps his arms around my legs. "I love you dad, thankyou, thankyou" he sobs. I stay focused on that crease in the wallpaper. I can't be sent to the camps with him, his sister needs me. I control my breathing, in... out. In... out. The cameras on our living room ceiling whir as they zoom in, capturing the action for the FineBros and their audience. But not for me. I will not watch the video of them dragging him away, I will not watch his mother react as she watches it. I will not watch the video of her reacting to it either. I refuse to, none of them. They will take my son, but they will not earn the ad revenue from me reacting to it, no. When I react, it won't be on video. They won't have time to drag me away...

Got this from the Reddit thread lol it's beautiful.

i hardly ever watch these videos but i figured i had subscribed in the part at one point or another. Turns out they werent in my subscriptions. The real time sub numbers site is neat. Good to see such a reaction to this.

Here's Ethan from H3H3 in an old video from 2015 explaining how easy it is to get your entire channel destroyed with strikes if you're unlucky:

I wasn't even fully aware how massive these networks have become. Modern YouTube is big business and with very little options to defend yourself if you're not one of the big players.

The previous asshole youtuber who got shit on by the internet for falsely accusing an old man of paedophilia has made a video about the current asshole youtubers who are getting shit on by the internet. What a time to be alive.

That's the biggest issue here. Legally the FBros wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on if they took the legal process on taking down another persons content. But they circumvent that through Youtube, and Youtube likes bending over for big companies like this. What it means is the FBros don't have to go through a legal process to take down a vid, they'll just abuse Youtubes system to do it for them. And you can't really challenge youtube, so it's a shitty situation.

Look at how takedown-happy they sound if you dare to call your videos "Kids React".

Oh yeah they lost their shit about that Ellen video.

And Buzzfeed.

Because there's nothing more "#TeamInternet" than copywriting verbs and suing people for filming basic human reactions.

So taking action against Ellen's video would be considered legitimate to you?
Nope, not at all. I didn't know about that (I watched their react world announcement and then this update). I've gone back through the thread now.

So yeah, that example shows that they're too broad in their conception of what they should be able to own.

Hopefully the drop in subs will open their eyes or at least change their behavior out of pure self interest.

That said, I really like react videos, whether theirs or not.

What's funny is his channel got destroyed by Fullscreen inc, the same guys representing The Fine Bros.

This is a very fascinating example of human ego, and how it tries to control things in a way that makes natural actions - in this case, recorded reactions - into games of assimilating to rules from someone who wants to control how its all done.

It's pathetic, frankly.
