Street Fighter V Roster Discussion |Thread 2| Deal with it & place your hope for DLC

LOL that's me every time I got grabbed in SFIV.

Saying someone is a 09er isn't inherently negative. It's only a negative when they say/do scrub things.
If you are talking about my topic title recommendation it was not meant as an insult to new players, why do you assume it is a negative connotation? I don't like those terms being used the way they are usually used either.

Because you don't label a player based on the year they joined? It doesn't even make sense. Unless it was someone describing themself as an 09'er, every other context I've heard that in is negative.

Typically it's when new players to the street franchise complain or suck at certain things or have lack of knowledge in ideas/fundamentals that have been in the game since SF2. "Oh he's a scrub '09er". "Of course he thinks this way about Street, he's an 09'er"

But what if someone started playing street in 2010? We gonna start tracking and put in our gamertags what year we started street? It's just a dumb generic term that holds zero weight (even if it wasn't negative way to describe newbies). I get some people use it in replace of saying "I started Street when 4 launched". Rant over moving on.

For a community thread, probably best to avoid a joke or reference that could be taken the wrong way out of context, or have a negative connotation just so new players aren't reluctant to come in and ask things.

Without touching the actual debate here I find it funny that in one post you encourage insensitivity because it's fun to put people on emotional tilt then, in that same post, flip a bitch and call for more sensitivity to new players. :lol

Fwiw I think both v-triggered and 016ers are funny in their own ways.

Dude you are making too big a deal out of this. The term is pretty clear in what it means, how someone uses it is a different matter, context is everything and in that instance there was nothing negative about it.

For a community thread, probably best to avoid a joke or reference that could be taken the wrong way out of context, or have a negative connotation just so new players aren't reluctant to come in and ask things.

Since obviously some people think of this term only as an insult i guess it would be best not to use it.

I've been getting a lot of flack for being an 'OG' from people that started with sf4. There's some resentment since I hated sf4 and am looking forward to sf5. People are weird.

Using FGC buzz words in a thread title can be instantly alienating, I think, regardless of context. There's already kind of a stigma associated with fighting games as an in-club of sorts, so something about the game is probably best. I don't even think it needs to be clever or funny. I do like my suggestion though :P

Haha, everyone can be on tilt though, it's not exclusive to new players or veterans. It's two different things. Making someone upset is different than labeling newcomers 09'ers cause they're "new" or bad at the game. What are people who started during 3rd strike called, 99'ers? It's just a dumb concept regardless.

Yeah. 09er means you started playing SF competitively with SF4.

Gotcha. Was never clear about that.

I don't really see why it's a bad thing, I mean, for 99% of people it was literally impossible to play even remotely competitively due to no online play. And local scenes are a complete crapshoot even now, I can't imagine even trying to get into competitive fighters in an era where they're not currently being made.

If I played Street Fighter my whole life and had an SF2 cabinet in my house growing up, but only got competitive in 09, am I an 09'er?

No, because you didn't have to use quarters and wait in line to play in the arcade back in the day you are a cheat and in fact not an OG but a filthy casual who needs to "git gud".

It's doable I guess. I started playing FGs competitively with a really, really small JJBA scene. Just gotta find the right people.
I thought an 09er was somebody that started sf with 4.
Most 09ers should have at least played SF2 before.

Here's a few that are "less" juvenile:

Street Fighter V |OT| Jiggling makes me rise up.

or

Street Fighter V |OT| Censored to perfection.

or

Street Fighter V |OT| 1, 0, 2, 4, 5, 3 (Capcom can't count)

...

I'll stop now.
