The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I'm huge into collecting gamecube stuff, but it's hard for me to justify the prices of any of these mods and cables when Dolphin exists.

I have four copies of the Zelda collectors disk (two sealed) and decided to sell one today. Also selling my HORI SNES pad for the GC. Only used it a handful of times in college, put it in a box at my parents place and found it this past summer.

Woo.

If you haven't (and you're interested), you should also read the discussion after the OP. It helps to explain why the OP got the results he did.

thanks NormalFish, i'm digging through it now. did you have a chance to take a pic of your gameboy micro faceplate? just curious how scratched up it is...

That comparison also reveals that the Wii to HDMI converter people like to use brightens up the picture. It's doing something that fucks with the image a bit. Which is strange considering the only job it has to do is that of an ADC from YPbPr to YCbCr. Maybe its luma conversion is off. So if you use it you ought to compensate by dialing down brightness on your set.

Could be a color space thing, or even something wrong with their capture setup with respect to that. If it looks too bright you could try manually setting color space to BT.601, which is what the Wii should be putting out.

I still need to try this out. I'm always reulactant to softmod my consoles while firmware is still coming out.

There is nothing to worry about. Nintendont and the mods required to run it run entirly in Vwii.

If you somehow manage to brick it( you wont) you only brick the Vwii side. You dont touch anything on the WiiU side.

Just tried with my phone (the only remotely good camera I have immediate access to) and couldn't get it to focus properly on the clear lens. It's nothing like... out of the ordinary for electronics scratches, though. Lots of little bits where it fell on the floor and hit a bit of grit or something similar.

gotcha, saw the image you pm'd, thanks! =)

I love the original Cube design so much. Such an awesome, powerful, beautiful machine.

But Nintendon't is so convenient, with the best image quality of all and additional features like widescreen hacks, running fro HDD and booting from the couch. And of course my whole Wii game library right there was well.

The only thing I can possibly justify using the GCN for is Game Boy Player. And I prefer to use my backlit SP in most cases.

This is truth!

Actually, yes. It's entirely possible that the capture device is incorrectly set to RGB 0 - 255 via HDMI port when the Wii is putting out YPbPr from 16 - 235 standard. Fuck, that's obvious. lol

We are of the same mind here. Exactly! Took da words right outta my mouf.

Man, this thread is pulling me back toward GameCube collecting, but I know I have neither time to play them nor money to buy them.

Here's my tiny but personally collection. Don't think it's worth pictures.

  • fire Emblem Path of Radiance
  • Game Boy Player
  • luigi's Mansion
  • Mario Golf Toadstool Tour
  • Mario Kart Double Dash
  • Megaman X collection
  • Odama
  • Both Orre Pokemon games
  • Soulcalibur 2
  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • Melee
  • Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4.

Nice, but you're missing Metroid, get on that FPA action!

Yep, both Metroid Prime games on GC are excellent and not too expensive. Prime 1 may be the GCs defining game, perhaps only second to Melee. Deserves to be in any collection, especially since you can find it for under $10.

Viewtiful Joe, Rogue Squadron, and I triple the Metroid recommendation. Cheap, but oh so good.

Edit: Jesus Zombie! Some of the things in Chibi Robo.... What the fuck am I seeing?! One part LSD trip and equal part terrifying nightmare fuel. Still loving this game, but lol.

Hi all.

I have a Gamecube modded with a Xeno chip for region free. Does anyone know if it's possible to play games via an SD card on this, and if so, how I go about doing it? I realised that all my of GC discs have been dumped via my Wii.

Also, re. the CodeJunkies SD Media Launcher:

http://uk.codejunkies.com/Products/SD-Media-Launcher__EF000580.aspx

Does anyone know if there are issues with running it on already-modded GameCubes? Are there any other options for me given that I have a modded GC so I can load stuff via a SD card?

Thanks.

Been replaying Pikmin, and man, what a great game this is! Makes me happy to know there is a fourth game coming (hopefully) this year.

Anyways, I dont like the time limit in the original, as it makes me really stressed and always considering replay the days to perfect. Does anybody remember, is it hard to get all 30 pieces, or should I try to relax a bit more?

It's not difficult at all. In fact, P1 is the easiest of the 3 games by far. Yeah, just try to relax. You don't need to get 4 parts a day or anything. 1 a day minimum and you can meet that easily, and easy still get 2 or 3 parts on some days.

Personally, it's my favorite and I find it more relaxing than the other games after it, because I'm not pulling my hair out over the difficulty.

Ok glad to hear this! Will definitely relax more from now on. Ive already replayed the first few days quite a lot because I figured I did something wrong lol.

I haven't actually done this yet with games but I was able to launch homebrew stuff off SD using the XenoGC and a burned boot disc (you can burn SD Media Launcher or use another boot disc).

Need some help on Chibi Robo. I feel like I might have glitched the game. I'm at the point where
Dinah asked me to find the Lego blocks, and I only need one more. I'm sure it's the one that the dog gives you... but the dog doesn't have it. I've fed him several bones and filled his water bowl, but no block. Most of the blocks I acquired before Dinah asked me, and no blocks show up on my binuculars in every room. So I'm sure the last block is the goddamn dog.
I'm completely stuck and the whole story won't progress after days of searching every room.

It's has been over a decade since I last played so I took this from the wiki hope it helps:
White: Backyard: Climb the tree, and at the top you'll see a spider web. Use your chibi-blaster to destroy the web (charge the fire by holding down A), then feed the bird cookie crumbs or squirt it with nectar (whichever one it wants). Fly onto the roof and find the piece of wood connecting the two roofs. Climb over to the next roof and it will be there.

Green: Jenny's Room: Climb up the plant and walk along the blue shelf until you get to Jenny's bed. Then, walk along the white side until you get to the pink/red purse. Climb up the strap. Then climb the purple strap and at the top you'll see a miniature train going around. The block is up in that area.
Yellow Block: After Funky Phil "dies", Peekoe will be selling it in the basement at night.
Blue Block: The day after Dinah asks you to find the blocks, Tao will be chewing on it. Give him a bone (you can find the bone either in the kitchen or in the backyard - use Y to look for it).
Purple: Dinah throws it at your head when she asks you to find the blocks.
Red: Foyer: Hover down from upstairs to the shelf that the block is on.

Second request:
White: On the wall, on top of the white border in between awnings. You'll have to climb that tree and drop down on it.
Green: Jenny's room: Atop of the castle. Use the center door to reach it quickly.reen: Jenny's Room: Climb up the plant and walk along the blue shelf until you get to Jenny's bed. Don't know if you glitched, but there were some obtuse moments back when I played.
like how you get a costume if you let your battery died while running around, I think it was a ghost costume

Nope.
Bandage costume. Ghost costume is neccesary for sidequests, bandage is not.

I appreciate the help. I really do. I read that guide and I can't find anymore blocks.
The thing is if you scan around rooms in first person, they'll be highlighted if they are there, but nothing comes up. I already bought the yellow one from that weird duck kettle thing, but I never remembered getting the dog one. Stupid dog! I want my brick!
:P

Maybe I'll just restart the game and make sure I keep track of what bricks I collect.

Xeno lacks native SD card support.
As mentioned earlier you can burn games or homebrew to discs, or use a boot disc to enable SD cards.

SD Media Launcher is likely fine. Just that you'll need to swap SD card once the desired program is running. They didn't update it for SDHC.

Also note the common pitfalls of playing imports. Basically, standard modchip installs don't change the GameCube's region mode.
  • Some Japanese games have compatibility issues run under non-Japanese modes.
  • Some PAL games play in English only on NTSC systems.
  • NTSC systems can output 50Hz (if desired for some reason), but composite or s-video will be black and white. A component cable fixes this on capable TVs.

Look up the program called "Swiss". I haven't used it much but it's aiming to be an all in one solution to various things, and a homebrew loader.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like a bit of effort if I need to use a boot disc to enable SD cards, may as well just use my actual game discs.

Re. the common pitfalls, it seems like most of these wouldn't affect me as:

a) I don't plan on playing any Japanese games, mainly US games and perhaps the odd PAL game, but I don't own any of the latter yet

b) My system is a PAL one so I shouldn't be affected by 50Hz...I think. I'm sure most of my TVs are 60Hz and above at the moment.

I had this idea about ripping all my games and running off SD but I also abandoned it. I just keep my discs out to play them. The SD stuff is good for homebrew apps though.

That's good to know. The main homebrew I'm interested in is that GameBoy enhancer that users here have said gives better performance than the GB Player. Do you know if you still need the GB Player for it, or is there a homebrew emulator?

the homebrew is a replacement for the GBPlayer DISC. Of course you still need a gameboy player, how else would you play the carts lmao

Yeh it's a software replacement for the GB Player disc, but you still need the hardware.

I grabbed one from Japan recently for a pittance, to match my silver GC hehe.

Of course you still need the GB Player. How are you gonna put in your GBA carts otherwise? It's the GB Player Disc you no longer need. But that's gonna just be replaced by the need for the Action Replay disc.

Thanks guys. I just imagined that there may be a GB/C/A emulator that would allow use of roms.

I do have a black GBP, also from Japan. Kindly sourced by Nippon Yassan before they turned into a bunch of (insert horrible word here).

There is from the same person that made GBI. I tried it a little while ago; it might have gotten better but I wasn't too impressed. Going through all this trouble you might as well use real hardware since you'll get perfection rather than emulator quirks.

Might as well use a Wii or PC if you don't mind emulation. Would probably be way easier.

I think I'll stick to GBP then. It's just another thing to get out of the attic, argh.

I'm having problems with a copy of Code Veronica I got recently. The disc looks like it's in great shape, but I keep getting disc read errors at about the same spot in the game. If I open the lid and close it again, sometimes the game will be able to load me into the next area, but I always get an error before I get much further. I've tried using both my gamecube and my wii to play, but both have problems with this area so I suspect it's an issue with the disc. Is there a good way to clean the game that might help with whatever micro scratch is giving me trouble?

Hit this guy up, seems he has it locked down.

Have you cleaned the disc at all?

Just completed Pikmin for the first time. What an amazing game! Did it in 25 days, so yeah, it was correct as was said here, that it wasnt necessary to perfect anything. By the end I did feel like there were quite a few parts of the game I still didnt really know about, so I guess I found the game slightly easier than it should have been. On the other hand, some stuff were very cryptic, like is it just me, or could you throw yellow pikmin longer than the other? If so, did they ever tell you?

In general I really loved how this rts is you versus the level, instead of you versus another player-like opponent (as in Red Alert etc), which of course worked thanks to the simply excellent level design. I would probably have liked even more puzzles and less fighting though, as they became a bit repetitive and also it could be annoying to try to hit especially the flying enemies.

Anyways, that second level, Forest of Hope is simply a classic. Moving straight on to the sequel now!
