The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Have you cleaned the disc at all?

Yeah, just the basic cleaning Nintendo recommends. The disc looks like it's in very good condition, which is why I tried it on both my Gamecube and Wii. I thought maybe it was just a laser going bad, but all my other games work fine so I think I just need to find a new copy. If anyone here happens to have a complete US copy of Code Veronica you want to sell, pm me.

sounds as if it was incorrectly manufactured if you're getting data errors w/o scratches.

i have a ps3 disc that's dead mint but won't read on any drive at a certain point (also a few gundam dvds collections that were recalled due to manufacturing error on one of the discs)

Guys.... 14 years later... and I finally realized that this logo

is a "G" for Gamecube....

How the hell did I not see that before?

I have no idea how people missed the G, C and cube.

But it is truly one of the greatest logos of all time. Which is fitting, as the console is also one of the great engineering feats in gaming hardware and a beautiful industrial design as well.

It's also got some weird yet fascinating, well if find them fascinating, details. Like how it's internally RGB 565. 5 bits red, 6 bits green, and 5 blue and this adds up to the 16bits in the YUY2 conversion.

On the other hand, some stuff were very cryptic, like is it just me, or could you throw yellow pikmin longer than the other? If so, did they ever tell you?

Throw them higher, you mean.

It's probably in the manual. And yes that is a thing. That's how you're supposed to defeat daddy long legs usually.

What's the best controller for GB Player? The little D-pad on the GC controller stinks.

Just completed Pikmin for the first time. What an amazing game! Did it in 25 days, so yeah, it was correct as was said here, that it wasnt necessary to perfect anything. By the end I did feel like there were quite a few parts of the game I still didnt really know about, so I guess I found the game slightly easier than it should have been. On the other hand, some stuff were very cryptic, like is it just me, or could you throw yellow pikmin longer than the other? If so, did they ever tell you?

In general I really loved how this rts is you versus the level, instead of you versus another player-like opponent (as in Red Alert etc), which of course worked thanks to the simply excellent level design. I would probably have liked even more puzzles and less fighting though, as they became a bit repetitive and also it could be annoying to try to hit especially the flying enemies.

Anyways, that second level, Forest of Hope is simply a classic. Moving straight on to the sequel now!

I played it for the first time on Dolphin last year. Took me all 30 days to finish (got all the items) and my team was mostly water pikmin because I was quite low on the rest. I've actually had a copy of Pikmin 2 for years but stopped playing early on for some reason. I'll get a copy of Pikmin 1 and play it properly -- and start up on 2 again.

A SNES controller with an adapter cable. The Raphnet one is pretty good.

The button mapping on most of them is a bit annoying though; A->A / B->B makes playing platformers just feels wrong. I ended up programming my own microcontroller and DIYing an adapter with the buttons remapped to my liking (A->B / B->Y) on holding a button at startup.

I always liked the novelty of using a GBA (via the GCN link cable). Yes, it's compatible with the Game Boy Player!

Of course, the d-pad on a GBA is just as small as a GCN D-Pad so that probably don't help you :(

it's the greatest logo of all time.

Can't argue with that :)

Playing 2D movement games with the gamecube D-pad is a bothersome task, the only aspect I plainly dislike about the controller. Alltough the GBA D-pad has the same form-waise, its more precise; the GC d-pad often registers unwanted additional movement when pressing either of the 4 directions.
The best option (in terms of worst to best) would be either a GBA, Hori GB player controller or Raphnet to Snes controller adapter. However, the latter always felt a little bit on the expensive side (if you include shipping) personally.

The GC-Video HDMI mod is supposed to come out soon (according to badassconsoles).

It basically digitally emulates what the expensive ($250) component cable video quality outputs. So you'll get 480p out with it.

My trusted installer sent me this picture of what another modder did (UK), and it is just the UGGS! Maybe that modder has no idea what they're doing, but my modder said he thinks they'll need to re-work the board design. This picture makes no sense to me lol.

Apparantly you must have a case mod, and the pics I've seen all look similar. This is why I don't want a HDMI mod.

I will probably just go component cable route, now watch the cables go up to $300 in price with knowledge the GC-Video is not doable right now for many, lol.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll look into the options. Is the d-pad really as small as the GBA's? Maybe it's the position on the controller and its ergonomics, because it feels much worse. I've thought that since the first time I tried using it.

Can't argue with that :)

You stretched the logo!

I almost went the GC HDMI route and maybe I still will while any issues are ironed out, but someone in BST was selling a component cable for $140 and I couldn't pass on that. I meant.. still a lot for a damn cable, but it doesn't make me wince like $250-300.

IIRC it is the exact same dpad.

I will go HDMI if that cable only option is legit, even if it is more limited. And not insanely expensive.

Question: let's say I wanted to buy a Panasonic Q off Yahoo auctions Japan

What should I search for? I'm bad at katakana/kanji

I can imagine that last boss was a bitch with mostly water pikmins. You should definitely play the sequel, it is also great. However, i am a bit ambivalent to the big focus on dungeons it employs. Basically, alot of the game is spent in very boring looking random dungeons were you can only bring 100 pikmins, and will have to survive all floors basically without reinforcements. So like a good old-fashioned dungeon-crawler. Its a great concept, and introduces some well needed difficulty, but I probably feel it takes up too much of the game. as I am always missing the surface after being there for a while. The level design is also much less interesting with it being random generated. Its not obligatory to do all the dungeons though, so guess that makes up for it. And the overworld levels and general gameplay is of course, just excellent as always.

Oh, and about the Gamecube-logo, I was mindblown by the GC as well.

You might even be able to just search in English. The thing never had Japanese branding.

But just in case:

Panasonic = パナソニック

Q = キュ

But it's very clearly an English Q

I might look for "パナソニック Q"

I just got the credits in Pikmin 2. That was sudden for sure. Only completed two stages, and collected two treasures on the third. No end-boss, nothing. Pretty strange way of ending it imo. Definitely going back for the 100% though.

Edit: Never mind. Wrong Pikmin.

Thanks! I found some for what look like reasonable prices.

It's time to pull the trigger on this. It's always been a dream item of mine. As well as the GC controller with the fucking keyboard on it.

Sorry to crash in the thread, but does anyone know of a way I could get my hands on a wireless controller? The joystick on my MadCatz controller broke, and I am so sad because I can't find a replacement.

You could post a WTB in the GAF B/S/T thread. Other than that, eBay or a retro store near you... The usual.

just wanted to ask, is there a possibility that someone adds an upscaler to the mainboard/motherboard?

something to get 720p out of 576i/480p?

that would be awesome.... on the other hand, welp, i dont want to destroy my dear lovely small cute cube.

So I snagged a disc only copy of Path of Radiance and Skies of Arcadia last night for about 60 bucks combined.

Where do you guys go to find box and manuals? I cant find anything on ebay.

Save a search for those manuals on ebay. I saved a search for a Resident Evil 2 N64 manual and finally got one after maybe 4-5 months.

Here are some other sites:

http://www.lukiegames.com/manuals

http://shop.bresoftware.com/ - I purchased a TMNT 2 Battle Nexus manual from there and it arrived in no time.
