The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Hi guys, I'm pretty sure this has been asked already, but I couldn't find anything after a quick search.
Is there any major downside to use a Game Boy Player on a PAL GameCube, hooked to a Sony Trinitron CRT TV through RGB cable (the official Nintendo RGB scart cable, if it can help)? I've read conflicting things about IQ, plus I know about how the games stutter in 'fullscreen' mode. Just wanted to check it out here, in case anyone's using a similar setup may give me some feedback.
Thanks in advance!

I'm running that exact setup, although with a generic RGB cable. The standard Game Boy Player software is kinda shitty. It outputs the games at 480i, and I think it adds some sort of filter over the image so it gets pretty blurry, even if you set it to sharp. And it has the aforementioned stutter issues as you know. But if you get an SD Media Launcher you can run something called Game Boy Interface which is leagues better than the official software. It outputs at 240p, and you can choose the ultra low-latency version which has almost the exact same framerate as an actual GBA. This virtually eliminates the stuttering and outputs a very crisp and sharp picture.

A PAL Gamecube running Game Boy Interface through RGB is probably the best way to play GB games on a TV.

Oh and at first I thought the Ultra low-latency version didn't work with my Trinitron because the image started to roll when I booted it up. But I just had to change the channel and then change it back after booting and the TV re-adjusted itself. So just a heads up. :)

No extra blur, that's just what 480i looks like. 480i retro collections look like that too.

The best pre-GBI solution for PAL was to use the NTSC GBP disc via freeloader and use 480p, if the monitor supports it.

I had some horizontal hold issues via RGB (GBI to Framemeister and PVM, PAL Gamecube). Via component looks cleaner and is more stable for me.

Thanks again, guys.
Yeah, unfortunately component is not an option for me - I owned a Japanese GC, and one of those fancy cables that cost bazillions now, but I sold it all, ages ago - and the Framemeister is still on my buy-list.

Here are some Next Generation / NextGen articles on Dolphin, pre-Spaceworld 2000.
Will add others if I can get them.

You're going to have the replace that Player's Choice version of Pikmin 2. The collector gods must be appeased.

LOL, would you believe that's one of the games I got during the Gamecube's lifespan? I played the crap out of it too. I'm not really sure why I didn't grab that game on release,
since I loved the first one.

It is the bain of my existence! :(

Better off just reprinting a custom black label and putting that over the original.

But he will always know....

I couldn't live with that.

Compared to buying another copy, I could. And I'm the guy putting silica packets im my games lol.

Me either. Heck, I'd have trouble sleeping at night if I knew I had a non black label game on my shelf.

I've thought about printing out my own label, but like RexRogers said, I'd always know and it just wouldn't be the same. I've been hoping to come across someone selling cheap, empty game cases that happens to include the non-PC version of Pikmin 2 so I can make a case swap at least. While I'm at it, I'd also like a pony and several million dollars. I think that's just about as likely.

Televator, what's this about silica packets in your games? I'm strangely intrigued by this.

Preservation from ambient moisture/humidity. Silica packets can be found in your new box of shoes and pill bottles. It's a good way to prevent corrosion on game carts, moisture from accumulating on discs, and keep paper and cardboard items looking crisp.

I always wondered what these were for. I always assumed it was about the scent.

I'd forgotten that GC had a Ridge Racer game. Haven't played mine in ages, but imported a GC on the JP launch day and installed a region switch. Just dug out my component and d-terminal cables this week and going to give it some love.

Subbed!

Good stuff, thanks for posting it!

Made the mistake of taking the short road by getting one of those third party AC adapters and have been rewarded with a bunch of video interference - at least I can take it back. Hoping the official one I just ordered shows up before the weekend though. Finally got everything together to run a 16 player Double Dash LAN and would prefer not to subject someone to those horizontal lines.

Which one? Does R Racing Revolution count?

Interesting... Given my paranoia that some unimaginable doom will befall my collection, this seems like an inexpensive way to help preserve them.

Too late! [Pacman death sound]

Remember when I said I hoped to find someone selling empty game cases so I could get a black label case for my copy of Pikmin 2? Just found a seller on eBay selling exactly that and ~$15 later its on its way to me! The last yellow label is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace...

Picked up a GC component cable from Televator. Wow, gamecube looks stellar. This might be because I've been playing N64 lately and it looks like absolute trash - hah. But I hooked up my GC to a 720p plasma that has component, booted up mario golf. It looks really amazing. I'm going to have fun with this.

Three more 'Dolphin Watch' NextGen articles. August, September and October 2000.

Again, print magazine lead-times very much apply, therefore the August Space World 2000 reveal of GameCube had not been covered at that point.

As of press time (late July), most second-parties were still waiting for finalized Dolphin development kit hardware and the only materials third-parties had received from Nintendo were emulation software tools.

oh how times have cha--- WAIT A MINUTE! :D

edit: funny how their updated mock-up of the controller got rid of the one thing they absolutely nailed in their previous mock-up.

At last, Gamecube's debut.

Maximum appreciation mode!

It's almost hard to believe that GameCube's architecture has lasted though Nintendo's present generation console hardware. So although Wii U isn't backward compatible with GameCube discs, it is with original Wii, and Wii was an overclocked GameCube with more RAM.

All three consoles share the same PowerPC architecture. Gekko, Broadway and the tri-core Espresso.

Now it's time to move into the future with a new architecture, NX -whatever that might be......

One thing is likely not to change going forward however, the people, the engineers behind Nintendo's console graphics. It is a matter of trust for Nintendo. The very people who designed Nintendo 64's Reality Co-processor at Silicon Graphics went on to form the graphics start-up company, ArtX, who designed the Flipper GPU / LSI for GameCube. They were then bought by ATi before GameCube launched. ATi merged with AMD and they became the graphics provider for Wii, the Hollywood GPU, a faster Flipper. Then, although Wii U's Latte GPU was much more of a change from Flipper to Hollywood, it would certainly have been designed in part by people from GameCube/Wii.

Nostalgia-bomb with those scans. Amazing.

I just ordered the OG Super Monkey Ball on eBay this morning :-).

I'm excited to play it.

Very nice scans. I lol'd at Matt C, Gamecube Sleuth. He's still around, right? I wonder about all the behind the scenes stuff the guys from 1990s print mags/early 2000s gaming sites have seen or heard but never spread publicly, before today's instant news and just about everything being reported and leaked on Twitter, dozens of gaming sites, forums, podcasts, streams, etc.

"The Matrix really did a number on the early 2000s."
-Before I even read the caption below that was the first thought that popped into my head when I saw the picture of the models with the Gamecubes.

How's the quality on the new Smash GameCube controllers? I'm looking to expand to 4 official controllers. I've got my launch Indigo and a silver Wavebird. The GameStop ones I've been using as P3 and P4 have all stopped working.

I managed to pick up DDR: Mario Mix with box and dance mat for $50 at a convention this past weekend. Can't wait to break the GCN out for it.

I haven't noticed any particular difference between them and the original ones. Longer cord, I guess.

The triggers are missing a metal rod that keeps them aligned when you press them. So if you press them at an angle they can be hard to press or jam.

It's actually a super minor issue though. The analog stick felt a bit better to me too, but that may have just been because it was new and I was used to old worn out ones. Oh, and yeah, they have a longer cord which you may find nice, or annoying if you sit close to the TV.

The triggers lack a metal rod (as someone elaborated above) and the finish is different. I got one a few months ago and it works just as great as the originals: unless you're a a super hardcore smash bros melee player, you're not going to notice any appreciable difference.

Is there a solid way to go from GameCube Component Cables to HDMI?

Edit: I'm not trying to get 1080p or anything, I just want to use a monitor @ the club that uses HDMI is all 480 i/p is fine.

The control sticks on the Smash controller feel tighter than my indigos, requiring more force to move them away from the center. Some people might like it that way but personally I prefer the originals. The triggers feel different too as they are missing the metal support rods.
