Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

I need to know when this game is going to be released so I can request 2 weeks off of work.

Only half kidding.

One week off.

I'm a little bit disappointed in the diplo options, but mostly because I read in the Paradox thread that there's not gonna be any proper intrigue/espionage system at launch :/

So that's a bummer.

Still, the combination of the standard Paradox diplo tools with standard 4x diplo tools seems like it could be interesting.

Stellaris Dev Diary #20 - War & Peace

Like in most of our games, occupying a planet with your armies does not mean it immediately becomes yours, of course; you need to demand it in the peace talks. There is a notable exception to this rule though; so called “first contact wars”. Before you have established communications with another civilization, it is possible to simply attack them and even take one of their planets (but once you take a planet, communications are immediately established.) Of course, such early hostility will never be forgotten, and will sour your relations for the rest of the game…

I didn't expect this, Every week I look forward to the game more and more.

Next week diary will be Administrative Sectors.

Yea every dev blog is sounding pretty awesome. I just hope it isn't too hard to play (more like Sins than EU4 etc).

This is a 2016 game right?

Yeah, this is for sure a 2016 game. If this was Paradox five years ago, it'd already be out :P (With a gazillion bugs)

Definitely sounds more like EU4 than Sins :P

Like Vicky 2, if the Paradox forumgoes are reliable (haven't played that one).

Sins is actually harder for me 'cause I suck at micro, so I'm pretty happy with that :D

I hope a mod comes out that lets me play as the Elites during the current Halo story time-line were they are in a civil war with the Covenant.

See Stellaris near-complete at the PC Gamer Weekender
But now I get to reveal—in an excited and child-like way—that they'll be bringing a near-complete build of Stellaris with them to show off on March 5-6 at London's Old Truman Brewery.

Game director Henrik Fåhraeus will appear in-person to talk through his vision and the mechanics of an unknowable galaxy generated fresh each time you start a game, assisted by Paradox Development Studio producer Anna Norrevik. They'll be demonstrating deep-space exploration, zoning in on how the early stages of a 4X transition to the events, anomalies and diplomacy of grand strategy.

Stellaris Dev Diary #21 - Administrative Sectors
While Sectors and Sector Governors cannot demand more autonomy, or directly rise up in revolt (things I’d love to explore in an expansion), over time their population tends to diverge ideologically from that of the regime, and create their own identity. Like-minded Pops will tend to migrate there if allowed to. In the same way, aliens of the same species will also tend to coalesce in the same Sectors. Thus, when Factions form, they will often tend to have their main seat of power in a specific Sector. And Factions can demand autonomy and achieve independence.

Any word on release date yet? I think this is the time I finally get into grand strategy.

Nothing in stone.

Getting closer and closer tho...

After reading through the paradox forums thread, I've warmed up significantly to the Administrative Sectors. A lot less independent and finicky than CK2 vassals but more significant than most AI governor systems. Sounds great.

I'm so super-interested in this game, if only I didn't suck donkey balls in strategy/4x games. :/
I'm stuck in the middle. I am absolutely awful at 4X games, but am a destroyer of worlds when it comes to RTS like Command and Conquer, Sins of a Solar Empire, Supreme Commander. I'll give this a go based on what people are saying, but I might get stomped.

Poked around the Paradox forums some more and 2 fun tidbits:

1) All planets in a species' home system will have unique names.

2) They're probably gonna start doing a World War Wednesday type deal! For those who don't know, World War Wednesday is something Paradox does for another of their games, Hearts of Iron, where they have a weekly dev-lead Lets' Play (basically). Could be very cool stuff ahead :D

Star Wars Sunday :P

Will they not let us name planets? (in-game, I'm sure we can through modding)

Yup. Also star systems. And if you change the name of a system without uniquely named planets it'll change the name of all the planets too, so Alpha Centauri orbited by Alpha Centaur 1, 2, 3, 4, change the system name to Poodle, planets become Poodle 1, 2, 3, 4.

I just meant that usually only whatever system humanity starts off in gets a suite of named planets, the others just get a specially named homeworld + a few in the Whatever-Number system.

Stellaris Dev Diary #22 - Alliances and Federations
The topic for today is “Alliances and Federations”. Now, we have modelled alliances quite differently in most of our games. In Crusader Kings II, for example, alliances are bilateral, and allies are (since the last patch) automatically dragged into wars with no option of opting out and breaking the alliance. In Europa Universalis IV, alliances are also bilateral, but you can decline a “Call to Arms” at the cost of Prestige. In Stellaris, alliances are multilateral (they can have any number of members, not just two), and are thus more like NATO and less like the complex web of mutual agreements that existed at the outbreak of the Great War. This means that members of an alliance need a greater say in matters that concern the entire alliance, notable declarations of war (and some things are simply not allowed if you are an alliance member, such as guarantees of independence.)

War summits everywhere:

Well, we could join this inter-galactic war to uphold justice, truth and freedom, and defeat the evil Space Nazis once and for all, but your ship design is shit, to be quite frank, so we're out. Good luck against the Hitlerbots!

Sounds interesting, I wonder to what degree you can be completely nefarious in alliances. I would love to be able to organise fake attacks against my allies and then blame it on a common enemy to help convince them to go to war.

No way I'm joining a federation if there's a chance someone else gets to design the fleet.

It's just the special Federation fleet; individual member fleets are still designed by individual members.

It actually sounds really damn cool, since the Federation fleet has access to everybody's best tech bits.

Who needs alliances when you are always at war with everyone!
That's my plan
(and I will most likely die horribly in my first game).

Next weeks diary is about Multiplayer!

Q: When is Stellaris coming out?

A: We'll be announcing a release date when we feel we are ready to commit to a specific date. Especially the HoI fans know how irritating it can be when we are too eager to set dates. We're trying to learn from our mistakes :)

Q: What will be released first, Stellaris or HOIV?

A: Stellaris reached beta before HoI4. No official dates announced yet though.

Q: Any projection for seeing gameplay of Stellaris In www type thing ? I super psyched for it

A: we'll look into it after gdc (note: March 14-18)
https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/477sfq/we_are_paradox_development_studio_creators_of/d0aykgb

Q: What feature/mechanic did you put into Stellaris that you always wanted to make but never fit the theme/mechanics of your other games?

A: Starting with just 1 thing.
https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/477sfq/we_are_paradox_development_studio_creators_of/d0aukiv

Q: How much emphasis is there on multiplayer in Stellaris?

A: With Stellaris the focus has been in stability and constantly maintaining a working more game throughout the project. I joined the Stellaris fame the other week, 20ppl and no problems. That brightened my hopes at least :)

Q: Do you have any plans on streaming Stellaris dev multiplayer soon?

A: lets see what pr thinks about it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/477sfq/we_are_paradox_development_studio_creators_of/d0axocr

A: But are there any ideas you adopted from other developers in previous 4X titles, that you considered forgotten / unpolished gems and that you plan to reintroduce in Stellaris?

Q: This is really a question for Doomdark, the lead designer for Stellaris and he is busy finishing the game this evening. In general though, I know there are lots of scifi fans on the team and that the ambition is that the game should be a new scifi universe every playthrough so expect lots of subtle references to everything from warhammer to battlestar galactica :)

Hmm, definitely no World War Wednesday setup until GDC... well, it's something. Hopefully that dev multiplayer thing comes together a little sooner :P

The "starting from just one thing" is interesting too, that's actually how I play most of my CKII and EU4 games, as a tiny as nation in the middle of nowhere that just grows and grows and grows. I'm gonna lose so much fucking time to this thing.
