20th Century Fox’s Deadpool spanked Fifty Shades’ Friday figure by 37% with a projected daily haul of $41.5M (that includes $12.7M in Thursday previews) and is on course to make a jawdropping 3-day of $102.5M and 4-day of $115.3M. These are industry figures based of closed east coast registers. They’re not from Fox, and things could change by the time we hit midnight on the west coast.

From Deadline

There is a marvel logo in the movie's opening logos. The popular thing to say is that Fox is legally obligated to put the logo in their marvel films, but I'm not seeing any real source on that.

They might be obligated, but at this point, I'd bet that Marvel Studios would rather it wasn't there.

An older woman from work was planning on taking her children (ages 7-12) to see Deadpool Saturday night. She assumed it was an MCU flick (of course, not in those words). I wonder how many people take their kids to see this, and how hilarious it is when they realize the mistake.

Oh we've had our share of refunds

Tried to get to my local theater's 6:30 showing. We're not THAT big of a town, and I showed up 30 minutes early. 6:30 was sold out. 6:50 was sold out. 8:00 was sold out. I paid for the 9:00 showing and THAT was packed as well.

I haven't seen anything like that for a film like this in some time. Even Star Wars wasn't that crazy for our theater.

you have to admit that this time you have to give the marketing of this film a big part in the success. They really nailed web, tv and Poster ads for this. Thought they would do minimal marketing since this is kind of niche "hero" but they went all out.
Glad for everyone.
Another loss for the "hope the super hero/comic bubble bursts" crew here.
WOM seems strong now and bluray/vod will be huge for this.

Marvel Enterprises is a listed production company on all of the Marvel movies, I imagine this is both a contractual requirement and the factual reality that even on the films made by other studios, Marvel still retains some rights over the production of these movies. I'd imagine mostly Marvel acts as an exec producer, ie. they get a cut of the profit, but they don't really have much creative input at all.

The actual details of the contract are probably only really understood by a few top lawyers and execs at these companies, and even then would probably come down to a long court battle if there was ever a serious conflict over what which company is actually allowed to do.

It will be interesting to see if Marvel gets a logo before the next Sony Spiderman movie, because they traded (at least some of) their rights over Sony's movies for the rights to use those characters in their own movies. ETA: Just checked IMDB, and the company credits for the Spiderman reboot has 4 Marvel credits after the Columbia Pictures credit, so I'd imagine so.

Was going to watch it tonight around 10:25, but when I drove by there was a line extending right to the doors. I'll probably have to swing around sometime tomorrow.

The logo was on all the previous Sony movies, IIRC (even before they made the merchandising rights agreement). And even besides that, why wouldn't they want the logo on the only non-Disney franchise that is actually related to the MCU?

I'm not saying they wouldn't want it, I was just wondering about the extent to which they signed over their rights to get Spiderman in the Avengers movies. We know they signed over the rights to any of the gross from the Sony movies, but it looks like they retain the production credit.

Seriously Fox better give Ryan a nice little bonus for this. By all accounts he's been battling for this movie for YEARS and when they finally make it its the biggest opening for an R rated film ever.

It's been said before but I don't think any actor has so completely embodied a comic book character since RDJ's Stark. Amazing marketing, great movie. I hope they don't mess up the sequel.

To think Deadpool got shelved after Wolverine Origins just to be revived from positive reaction to a leaked trailer/pitch that had also been mostly forgotten is crazy.

By the time they finally got it made the executive he was specifically shouting out in the pitch reel was no longer there.

...which might be why the motherfucker finally got made.

Let's be honest, Deadpool is counter programming for the average joe that is feeling superhero fatigue.

Which is going to do a great job of mitigating that fatigue! Just like Guardians did in 2014 and, Dormammu willing, Dr. Strange will at the end of this year.

It wasn't until I went to see it in IMAX tonight that I realized this wasn't in 3D, which makes this even more insane. And this isn't even a US-centric hit either, it's by all accounts doing huge numbers in Russia, Germany, Australia, etc as well. Absolutely remarkable.

Really? Thats the most surprising part to me if true. Comedy is one of those things that doesn't always translate from country to country so if its doing well overseas thats pretty impressive.

Jeez, didn't even think of that. Lack of 3D was great, but there must be a fuck ton of people watching to hit $100m!

Fuck me. And the thing is I can believe it. New to opening day in London and the cinema was packed. I was talking to people who didn't seem to be huge comic fans talking about seeing it. It's insane. Tom Rothman must be looking like the biggest fool of a film producer. He hates comic book movies despite them making money hand over fist, they had a completed script for a R rated comic book movie that made $100mill opening weekend domestic on a $40mill budget for almost a decade that they sat there doing nothing. Wow.

We are about to live in a world where Deadpool has the highest grossing OW ever for an R rated movie.

Someone should tell Trump America is great again cause of this he no longer needs to run for president.

I probably won't see it until next week but man all these reviews are killing me want to see it now. Don't even give a fuck about spoilers i just keep reading everything i can about the movie.

Updated numbers:

This would be amazing if it actually hits 100 million.

This is what I hoped Mad Max would pull off. though at least they made up for it with critical acclaim.

I really hope something spurs a revival of mid budget R-rated action films. Maybe Deadpool can be that catalyst?

Loved the movie. So many children though. Damn, I mean it's like parents completely ignored the rating of the film. So inappropriate. Loved the meta, 4th wall breaking in the film.

Not fussed. As long as we get another handful of Deadpool movies with a Wolverine team up thrown in.
