Pretty damn happy that a Deadpool movie has actually come out and that it's actually well. We've come a long way since X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Love that two very different movies with relatively unknown protagonist(s) such as Deadpool and GOTG can be successful. Who the heck needs a angsty batman or spiderman when you can have a foul mouthed fourth-wall breaking mercenary or a talking tree.

Fox must be happy that they have a new perfectly cast character that can draw an audience much like Wolverine did. They better greenlit that X Force movie sooner than later once Hugh retires the character

You can thank Tom Rothman that he left Fox he was the one who refused to make this movies and hated superhero movies in general look at the botched X-Men 3,Origins Wolverine as an example that guy was messing with everything even the creative control of the director. But also Fox in general for not listening to what the fans want see the last fantastic 4 that was even when they showed the trailers and the whole story around it was a big fucking mess. Yeah they turned around with The Wolverine since you already know Origins Wolverine sucked ass (the game is better than that movie!).

Deadpool has a huge following even beyond comic book fans. It's not even remotely close to gotg in that respect. Every convention (not just comic) I've ever been to has had multiple deadpools cosplaying. I've never seen a gotg cosplay. Deadpool being R combined with the rabid fanbase meant this movie was gonna do well.

Deadpool's "rabid fanbase" wasn't that rabid (you basically just argued that 3 or 4 cosplayers per con is a meaningful metric) and Deadpool being R is audience limiting, not audience expanding.

There's a reason this performance is shocking the living shit out of everybody, Fox included. "Doing well" for Fox was anything north of a 35-40 mil 3-day weekend. Doing great was 65-70 (which is what they thought heading in). Nobody had 1-fuckin-30 on their boards.

Still, relative to Batman and Spiderman it's small. I'm just glad to see comic book movies that isn't Batman and Spiderman at this point.

Edit: Or Wolverine for that matter. But i would take a Deadpool vs Wolverine movie anytime though lol.

Rumored lineup would be Cable, Cannonball, Warpath, Domino, and Feral. Probably add Deadpool.

I know that adding Sunspot doesn't make any sense, but I wish they would, because the Cannonball/Sunspot team is just how I automatically think of those two.

They'd basically have to have Copycat as well,
given that that is already set up.

20th Century Fox’s Deadpool is bigger than anyone thought possible. After posting the biggest opening day in February with $47.5M, the Marvel character also scored the second biggest day ever for the month with an estimated $41.88M. This now raises Deadpool‘s 3-day take to $133.4M, making it the second best debut ever for the first installment of a superhero property behind Disney/Marvel’s The Avengers ($207.4M).

Typically fanboy films are frontloaded seeing drops of at least a third in their second day. Deadpool dipped -12%. This title is hitting some sort of zeitgeist with moviegoers.

We're going to be seeing a lot more Deadpool now, which personally isn't something I want since the character has only been fun in short bursts/cameos.

Take creative risks, get greater rewards.

More like "adapt the characters honestly and the things that make them appealing will shine through."

It's not about the rating so much as it is this is literally the first honest, accurate adaptation of an X-Men character Fox has done.

Yes, even more than Wolverine.

Looks like people really like superhero movies that don't take themselves too seriously.

I hope Warner Bros. is ok.

that didn't stop the nolan films from being huge. diversity would be nice so i'm glad we got deadpool and we're getting xmen soon too as well as batman v superman/suicide squad. which all look pretty removed from each other.

Sure, but you can't deny that this movie was probably viewed as a massive risk by traditional execs. It's 'creative' by Hollywood standards. They had every opportunity to dumb it down and didn't, so kudos to them.

Deadpool: Highest opening weekend ever for a 20th century Fox film. Beating Star Wars: RotS. What a time to be alive.

Why would I deny that? I'm pretty sure I argue that exact point in this thread.

That "honestly adapting superheroes" is considered a risky proposition is part of the problem is all I'm saying. It shouldn't be considered as such.

(France here) I was pretty surprised last week when I saw my local big cinema sold out for a screening before the actual release. They do that for a lot of big movies but I've never seen those sold out before.

You're allowed to see it if you're 13 years old here though.

Really happy this is successful because it wasn't a sure thing. If Snakes on a Plane taught us anything is that online fanboy buzz doesn't always translate into box office bank.

$130 million is better than anyone expected for the whole run of the movie. I am so glad it is doing so well, and i can´t wait to see the movie on Tuesday.

If Batman v Superman bombed then DC should worry about Suicide Squad.

The problem with judging Batman vs Superman is that
1. It could be absolute shit but will still do incredibly well early at least, but could hurt others going forward(though I feel Suicide Squad is safe as its so different).
2. as a team up the audience could absolutely love Batman & Wonder Woman only to have Superman sink the movie.

Suicide Squad is the real test, not only is it pretty unique but you are going to have WB wondering why they wasted time and money on it instead of jumping straight into Batman if it bombs.

Yes, even more than Wolverine.

Way more than Wolverine.

I wonder if Fox will actually consider a more faithful take on the character now. Even letting Jackman finally cut loose with berserker Logan for his final movie would be something. Imagine if they made that movie R-rated.

oh man it would be great if this makes fox rethink wolverine's last movie as a much more violent property.

Lets hope this help studios stop fearing R rated movies so much

Fox already had a pretty good success last year with Kingsman, which was also released during February and roughly around the same time frame as Deadpool. Kingsman is based on a comic book as well. Max Max Fury Road also did very well, given that it was an early summer 2015 release. It didn't quite do as well as Kingsman, but it still made back a nice profit world wide and the heavy acclaim and Oscar nominations has given Hollywood a little more faith in R-rated action movies.

To me it seems like there is a bit of an upswing in releasing R-rated movies. The success of Deadpool will help cement that.

Cross post from the deadpool thread.

This movie is the most fun i ever had in a long time from tbe beginning with the sublime subtle notices towards everything from Ryan himself to every gag joke you can think off. Even the whole audience was laughing so damn hard i could not believe it and nearly the whole theater was packed this morning here in the netherlands i went to Pathe de Kuip i think a lot of dutchies here know it.

Also people please untill the end credits i laughed my ass off...this is my movie of the year already and i think i am going back to it next week i missed i think some stuff but good god this was entertaining.

Thank you ryan reynolds you made this movie and it was a long road but it was worth every penny to see it.

I wasn't blown away with the movie, felt it lacked a few more setpieces but considering their small budget it was very well done.

i seriously think they're gonna work a deadpool scene into that film after seeing these numbers.
I was thinking the same thing earlier, Deadpool will probably have his Tony Stark Hulk movie moment in Wolvie or Gambit, he'll be in the movie for 2 minutes and be a major advertising focus.

Good morning.

Don't come to my theater to see Deadpool if you're <17. I won't let you in. 😛

i know it's silly to be pleased for an extremely rich actor but i'm happy for ryan reynolds. despite him being seemingly indestructible in hollywood he definitely put his stock on the line with this one. it must've been painful doing press for origins.
