‘Deadpool’ Obliterates Records With $135 Million Debut

“Deadpool,” a loose-limbed comic book adaptation, ravaged the President’s Weekend box office, torpedoing records and re-igniting the career of star Ryan Reynolds.

Filmed for an economical $58 million, the 20th Century Fox release has already made back its production budget and then some, racking up $135 million over its first three days in theaters. It could make $150 million over the four-day holiday. That easily surpasses the previous President’s Day weekend and February record holder, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which set a high-water mark with its $85.2 million debut last year.

But just as “Fifty Shades of Grey” used whips and handcuffs to reinvigorate the tired erotic drama genre, “Deadpool” relied on raunchy humor and a fourth-wall breaking central character to apply a fresh gloss on superhero movies at a time when costumed avengers threaten to reach saturation levels. It also stands as the biggest ever bow for an R-rated movie, sailing past “The Matrix Reloaded’s” $91.8 million launch.

“Deadpool’s” success extends a lifeline for Reynolds, once a rising star in Hollywood, whose ascent was derailed by costly bombs such as “Green Lantern” and “R.I.P.D.” The actor first played Deadpool in 2009’s ” X-Men Origins: Wolverine” then labored for years to bring a spin-off version to screens. A sequel is already in the works.

“All it takes is one gigantic, massive, record-breaking movie to put a career back on track,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore.

Despite a cold front that kept much of the East Coast indoors and contemplating hacking up their armoires for kindling, ticket sales remained robust throughout the holiday. Warner Bros.’ “How to Be Single,” looked to capitalize on Valentine’s Day, bringing in largely female crowds to the tune of $18.7 million from 3,343 locations. It should make in the low $20 million range over its first four days, finishing in third. Rebel Wilson, Dakota Johnson, Alison Brie, and Leslie Mann star as four women navigating the Big Apple sans significant others. The update on the “Sex and the City” formula set the studio back $38 million to bring to screens.

Paramount’s “Zoolander 2,” which revisits dim-bulb male model Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) more than a decade after he first stormed runways, disappointed, earning roughly $15.7 million from 3,394 locations for a fourth place finish. It is projected to generate $18 million over the holiday. Bad reviews may have been the culprit. The comedy, which brought back original stars Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson, received a meagre 23% “rotten” rating on critics aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes. The high fashion satire cost just over $50 million to produce.

Last weekend’s champ, “Kung Fu Panda 3” added $19.6 million to its $100.3 million haul. It should make $26 million for the four-day holiday, finishing in second place.

The Coen Brothers’ Hollywood satire, “Hail, Caesar!,” rounded out the top five, earning $6.6 million for the three days and a projected $7.5 million for the four day celebration of all things Oval Office. It has grossed $22.3 million in its first two weeks.

In limited release, Michael Moore’s “Where to Invade Next,” a documentary examination of how Europe tackles social problems the bedevil the U.S. such as gun control, prison reform, and school lunches kids can stomach, earned $933,240 from 308 screens. It has grossed just over $1 million following an awards qualifying run.

More to come…

God DAMN @ the thread title.

Insane result for Deadpool. I can't imagine any box office story coming close for the rest of the year.

What a bomb Zoolander 2 ended up being. Crazy that Deadpool and Zoolander have a nearly identical production budget ($50m) whilst one is an action flick, the other a comedy; shows how bloated Z2 is.

Deadpool earned every cent he's getting. His movie was fantastic.

I'd be shocked if Ryan Reynolds wasn't doing victory laps (or at least a celebratory commercial in costume) right now.

Ridiculous opening for Deadpool. Who they hell would have thought that an R rated Deadpool film would be the first $100m+ weekend for February and also one of the biggest openings for a comic book film ever? Only Spidey, Batman, Iron Man, and the Avengers have bested it. That is impressive as hell.

EDIT: Oh, and it posted an opening that huge without the benefit of 3D showings either.

WOW! Only a couple of days ago we were saying it has a chance at 100. WOW

Where's that guy that thought Zoolander had a bigger audience than Deadpool

I can't believe this movie beat almost every MCU movie. Insane

I saw another gaffer post the same thing you are asking i want to know it also.

But i am most happy for Ryan this was a huge and long journey for him nearly 11 years in the making.

How could almighty Slayven "Comic Book Cosmic God" be so wrong in saying that Deadpool would flop
Looks like there's 135 million reasons why it succeeded

Proud that this movie made bank, hoping it reaches Ant-Man levels of probability

Not to mention that it's the best opening for an X-Men related film ever. Try to wrap your head around that one!

Nice Deadpool

Hope this allows Hollywood to stop shying away from R, but learning that it isn't just gore and curses... need to be used well

Deadpool is officially the highest opening for a new comic IP, unless you count Avengers.

By the same time next week, it will have topped Wolverine Origin's Domestic haul.

This also goes to show that if you adapt a comic character and keep the tone and spirit of the character that people like, the film will do well.

RIGHT NOW FOX execs are setting up meetings to completely retool Jackman's last wolverine movie... Wolverine vs. Deadpool is COMING! ;D

So Deadpool's OW in the US is approximately $33m less than Fantastic Four's entire worldwide gross.

In fact it's over 5 times F4's OW.

Does this mean Bryan Singer will put his dirty pawns on Ryan Reynolds soon?

I highly doubt Reynolds would do a sequel without Miller unless Miller didn't want it. He seems like a loyal guy

I really hope Reynolds and team keep control of the franchise and don't let Fox fuck it up

Disney needs Marvel to create a Marvel Knights spin off like how Fox has 20th Century Fox and Searchlight or Sony Pictures and Sony Classic

Marvel Knights = Rated R, adult theme movies

Marvel Knights:

Moon Knight
Punisher
Ghost Rider
etc.

Avengers should count as a new comic IP, and it shouldn't at the same time.
It was a sequel to several movies technically, but it was also the first ever Avengers film (Marvel that is).

I understand arguments for both, but personally I consider it the first in an IP.

Honestly, the one thing I hope this changes now is the fact that you can release big films in Feb and since get a massive payday. 50 Shades and Kingsman helped, but this showed a lot more. Less jam up in May and June means more time for movies to breath.

Last thread (or one of these threads, at least) I noted that this is essentially what Fox did last year with Kingsman, but on a larger scale, obviously.

What does this movie look like if it has a run similar to that film's performance last year?

Wow Hail Caesar's budget was really small for a period movie with a cast like that. Guess most of the actors worked for peanuts compared to their normal rates. I hope it does well overseas so it is isn't remembered as a huge bomb for the Coens.

I over estimated people's sense of taste

I kid, I kid

480M domestic.

I think this run will have an even steeper curve. The word of mouth far surpasses Kingsman, which was no slouch itself

I guess Fox is more than happy to have been wrong about initially thinking that a Deadpool movie wouldn't be a hit. From being stuck in development hell, to getting saved by leaked test footage, to the biggest R rated movie opening ever.
