this is truly insane. I was rooting for this movie the whole time and i never even expected it to just explode like this. Congrats to everyone involved, Reynolds, the director, the writers, everyone else, the marketing team too, for being so passionate about this project and believing in this movie they wanted to make for like 6 or 7 years, finally getting it made and it turned out great, and then getting rewarded for it.

Above and beyond all other Marvel and DC movies man so great to see this. Ryan worked 11 years 11 long and brutal years to get this movie into theaters and look where we are now.

I'm hoping it has a fantastic hold due to WoM
Be nice if its less than 40%

If it can stay at the top till BvS, it will be a huge victory, unless I'm missing a most vie that can clip or before then

Avengers should count as a new comic IP, and it shouldn't at the same time.
It was a sequel to several movies technically, but it was also the first ever Avengers film (Marvel that is).

I understand arguments for both, but personally I consider it the first in an IP.
I don't consider it new. It was effectively another Iron Man sequel, with a bunch of other characters, as far as the marketing was concerned (indeed, there's a clear box office divide between the MCU films that feature Iron Man and the ones that don't).

This is one heck of a debut for Tim Miller too, the guy went from directing some brilliant CG video game trailers to a massive blockbuster that's being praised by fans and critics alike.

Glad for both him and Reynolds.

I don't think the film has much direct competition until then, but any reign at the top will surely end by the time Zootopia comes out in the US.

So I thought Zoolander 2 must have done horrible compared to the original, but the original had an identical $15.5 million opening weekend on the way to $45 million domestic total, $60 worldwide, so I'm not sure how much they could have realistically expected for a years later sequel like this. Did the original blow up on home video like Austin Powers or something?

People wanted something different. The MCU has felt really same-y minus maybe Winter Soldier and Guardians.

I only hear that kinda stuff on here and from certain nerd movie reviewers. The rest of the world just wants to have an escape and watch fun superhero stuff. It's why Fan4stic did so awful..not a lick of fun to be found in that turd.

Why would the Defenders be R rated? The only version that would work with is Dr. Druid and I doubt Marvel wants to cover rape on the big screen.

I meant Netflix wise as another poster pointed out
You made me realize Netflix is MK, so at least use the Avengers formula for that series too

I'm guessing all these Netflix series might have a Heroes for Hire Netflix Original movie planned?

Same to ask for The Defenders type but be more adult theme oriented using the other cjaracters

I look forward to seeing how much marketing for Suicide Squad changes. I expect them to go full comedy advertising.

To be fair, it was already a bit subversive. Especially with the last trailer and posters that came out. Though I'd imagine the success of this movie must give them a bit more reassurance that there's an audience for dark and mature superhero movies.

Ya. Worst case scenario for Zootopia is a $35-40M opening. Deadpool won't be making that in its 4th weekend. Even the Force Awakens was down to $42M in its fourth weekend.

Shocked by the quality of the movie and it's reception.

Hopefully this means less meddling and more adherence to source material when it's demanded going forward

Cross post from the Deadpool opening day thread:

Deadpool with the same legs as Watchmen would make $263M domesetic.

Deadpool with the same legs as X-Men Origins: Wolverine would make $285M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Man of Steel would make $305M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Age of Ultron would make $324M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Days of Future Past would make $348M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as The Winter Soldier would make $369M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Ant-Man would make $425M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Guardians of the Galaxy would make $477M domestic.

I think that gives us an idea of the possible range for Deadpool's domestic total. With a $135M opening, less than $250M is impossible, and less than $300M is improbable unless the film was a one weekend wonder.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say that somewhere between $325-375M domestic is a likely endpoint, but we could see the film get higher than that if holds are good in light of weak competition in coming weeks. The Passion of the Christ still holds the Rated-R domestic record at around $380M. American Sniper is the only other R-rated film to ever break $300M domestic.
Do deadpool with the legs of avatar, please.

If Deadpool became one of the biggest hits of the year & BvS somehow disappointed the Warer Bros. execs, would the big media narrative become "General audiences only want fun/comedic superhero movies"?

I'm surprised Batman Begins had such a low opening weekend. I know it's over 10 years ago and it was a different time for those films, but was there still a bad taste from Batman & Robin or something?

My god, have we finally reached the point of Ryan Reynolds fandom being hipster bait?

Anyway, you guys ought to check him out in Mississippi Grind. He and Ben Mendelsohn are pretty terrific in it.

and if X-Men: Apocalypse opens below this... does that mean FOX rethinks Bryan Singer? >.>

He's already on the way out, isn't he? I could have sworn that he already said that this was going to be his last X-Men film.

I think all three leads are on the way out with him, so any change was going to wind up being pretty dramatic regardless of the success of Deadpool.

Part of it is that, but Batman Begins also opened on a Wednesday. Its 5-day was $72M. That was still decent back in 2005.

Not only that but i think Suicide Squad..is going to suck pretty hard. BvS can be good but i hold my breath on that one also.

Deadpool is wearing his green pants today.

You think DC might reshuffle Suicide Squad into a R rating?
Guessing that would require re-shoots?

I mean I still remember New Line Cinema and Blade series, fucking Wesley Snipes has to mess up a good thing ;(
I already thought Squad would be R. Have they announced what they were shooting for yet?

I think they long ago said they were going for PG-13.

I don't think they could do reshoots this late. Unless they filmed stuff for a "unrated directors cut" or something, I think they're stuck with what they have at this point.
