GAF, I've made a huge mistake. (Job related.)

Yeah you jumped the gun. Any IT in the corporate area is slow because they often invest very little money towards that area, but really for your first day that's usually how things are. You definitely could have asked your boss if there's something else you could help with and even demonstrate you could help with IT's set up since you do have a bit of a technical background. That's a huge plus and shows value for your time (instead of getting up and leaving).

I can tell you're not the most patient with this sort of thing. Not everyone's patient of course, but for the future I think you ought to settle your impatience with another more proactive solution. Now look forward! You already learned your mistake.

My first days have always been like that, although generally I've been given some hard copies of things to read through and it's felt like I've gone back in time for a day or two.

IT services and computers are generally the most awkward, even with advance time they aren't always set up correctly.

You said you went through college, right? How was this situation not ideal?

All the trouble I've had finding jobs and you quit yours not even a day in because of some stupid ish? Stay at home and let everyone else get the jobs they deserve

Dude, what? You left a job because you were bored for two hours? You dun goofed. It's hard to get jobs out there. It usually takes a week to get up and running at a corporate office.

You went from getting paid while doing nothing besides browsing gaf on your phone to being unemployed while doing nothing besides browsing gaf on your computer.

Yeah ... I think it's reasonable to assume that you fucked up.

You didn't think to go ask a supervisor if there was anything you could be helping with, or when training would commence, or where to track down a power brick?

Oh man. Wow.
This this this this this this this this this x10000

Well, in fairness, he did go and talk to his boss, and it sounds like she politely said "I don't know what you should be doing, I'm busy, go away." Which, you know, is still a terrible reason to quit a job after 2 hours. But he did try to talk to his boss at least once.

What in the world?

This is common. 2.5 hours is nothing. Some people take weeks before getting up to speed and start doing "real" work.

It's paid on the job training.

You never did internships or anything? You should've been familiar with this type of stuff. Most managers are pretty busy and training new employees is usually last on the priority list.

"I'm not sure it's a good fit."

Yeah, you fucked up big, but it's only one job. If you found one job, you can eventually find another. And the bonus is you'll know NOT to fuck up in that way next time.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
This is a thread you probably should have made at hour 1 of sitting there. We could have talked you out of this. Yikes.

To be fair there's a major perk of browsing GAF on your home computer. You don't have to wear pants. Browsing in my pants-wearing work just isn't the same.

I--- is this a troll? Am I-- is this happening? Is this for real? "respect their people". He was on the company's money and not being asked to do anything that goes against his values or personal well being. This is not "I was called for an interview and had to wait three hours before being called in, without being offered a glass of water and I'm wasting my time because I have actual better things to do.". This is "I was at work and since there's not an IT guy I had a bit of downtime and reacted in a very unprofessional manner.

If anything he wasted their time as now they have through the hiring process again and/or go back to people they already told did not get the job.

That was a crazy bad decision. First day and hell first week are rarely busy. Just about every job will be that way, especially desk jobs.

You didn't destroy your future though, just that job.

If you get a job somewhere smaller, it will be easier. If you took complete umbrage at the way they organised this detail, then you'd probably be finding problems for you everywhere you turn.

But people who are totally corporate-environment-driven will tell you you've ruined everything.

Corporations are the worst place to work. In a sense, you escaped - as long as you succeed in finding new work.

I'm patient, so I would have stuck out the days/weeks of nothing to do, but would have felt horrible about it.

Did you fuck up? Yeah. You sound like someone that's never held a job in their life.

Did you fuck up your life? No. If you got this job you'll be able to get another job. Just... never mention this experience in any capacity whatsoever at future job interviews.

well said

Well, in fairness you're making stuff up. From the OP:
After two and a half hours I had had enough. So I went to my boss and told her that I don't think this is a good fit. I told her that they don't seem organized and told her that I wasn't doing anything. She told me that it's only the first day and that I'm in training. But I told her that I haven't done anything and I wasn't even getting trained. So I told her that I'm leaving and am going home.
If anything he wasted their time as now they have through the hiring process again and/or go back to people they already told did not get the job.
No, no, you see, companies have to accommodate for OP because he's a unique snowflake, Nintendo's gift to humankind and our savior; how dare they not assign a life-changing task to OP on his first 2.5 hours in his new job.

What you did is pretty disrespectful towards the company that took the time to hire you OP. I'm tempted to paste the "shot themselves in the foot" meme but I have better stuff to do.

it did seem a bit too harsh to quit just for that...

I can't really speak though because I actually do grab every single chance to do nothing at work and even create them by finishing tasks earlier without telling (like browsing GAF)

and the best part is

hey, maybe I should ask what I should be doing since I've been doing nothing for 2.5 hours

or failing that

yay I'm getting paid for doing nothing right now

and OP thought neither of these things lolol

Hilarious.

I sat at my desk for 3 days before anyone even asked me to do anything. It was right in the middle of recruiting season and everyone was busy. I went to my boss after 15 minutes on the first day and she said they'd get around to me, and apologized. I said no problem. I sat until like 3PM that day, asked again, and she was clearly flustered, so I apologized and went back to my desk.

I just walked around to all the departments and introduced myself the next day. Went up to the IT guy and asked how to set up my email and such, he helped me with that. I offered to help organize papers for one of my new co-workers because her desk was a mess. She was super grateful. I saw that a guy was giving a tour of the factory to some college kids and I asked if I could tag along. A couple more little things that were supposedly "beneath my position". This all got back to my boss and she was incredibly impressed. Since then it's been easy street.

So, yes, you fucked up. Think, man. But no, your future is still fine. It's one job. Learn and move on.

Sorry Op, can't side with you on that one. It was very unprofessional of you to just leave like that. And only with in 2.5 hours....and on the FIRST day? If you needed that job you should've just sat there.

After getting told that I screwed up, that I ruined my future, that this is how the corporate world works, I'm feeling very depressed. It definitely hit me that I made a huge mistake. Why don't I just kill myself now and get it over with? I have no future anyway, right? Why does the corporate world work this way?! This is horrible! Maybe I'm not meant to be in a corporate environment. Maybe I'm just meant to make minimum wage and be stuck at some dead-end job.

I hate my life. Did I fuck up my future that badly?!

Buddy, you did fuck up. There's no ifs, ands, ors, buts about it. But, it's not the end of the world. You definitely do have a future and this is only a small bump in the road of your life. Trust me, there are people who have done worse and continue to do worse.

Life's all about picking yourself up after holding losses. The shock/guilt/sadness from this is going to sting for a bit for sure but you will be fine, trust me. Keep at it: I would not mention this event to your future employers but it'll make a funny story to tell folks when you are over it.

Goddamn, this is like the opposite of OP.

Sorry, OP. Read the above and try again.

Better luck next time.

Do you know how many people in the US would love to get paid to sit for 2.5 hours and do nothing.

Lmfao... and now you're on GAF like it means something!!!

Well... you're not paying for it now, but you might pay in the future. What the hell were you thinking? Is that the type of thing you want on your resume? Walked out on a job after literally a few hours? To go home and do what? Sit around and browse GAF?

Read this over and over OP

You quit a job after 2 and 1/2 hours?

Did they not give you an agenda for training?

Did you think about asking, "Hey, is there anything you'd like me to do while I'm waiting to get set up?"

I'm absolutely baffled by your decision.

Nope, no agenda or anything. I wasn't told to do anything. Everyone seemed kinda busy so I didn't want to bother them.

So, just wait for them to find it? I don't get it man. Were you really that anxious to start doing work and becoming stressed out?
The office assistant was looking for a power brick. She found 4 of them but none of them were the right ones for the monitor.

What do you mean I'm not running the company yet?! I've been here for six days! Screw you guys I'm outta here.

That was a gigantic mistake. They were right to fire you since you clearly aren't mature enough for a job like that. But it doesn't ruin your future. Just learn from this experience and don't mention it to future employers. Dust yourself off and ride again, cowboy. And have some patience next time.

Sit down, do nothing, get paid for it...and then quit. OP, you're a moron for passing up such a light job on-boarding.

There's probably quite a few posters here on GAF that would love the opportunity that you spat on with your youthful entitlement.

Ive been at work for about 3 hours now and haven't done a single thing. Maybe part of the training was to see how long you could do nothing for.

OP, did you have parents or mentors that had corporate jobs before?

Friends?

Are you the first in your family with a corporate job?

Sounds like you're super green.

I learned this stuff on internships in high school.

Corporate life is slow. And new employees, especially entry level ones are the last one managers think about. They have other pressing deliverables. Enjoy it. It doesn't last long.
