Yeah you jumped the gun. Any IT in the corporate area is slow because they often invest very little money towards that area, but really for your first day that's usually how things are. You definitely could have asked your boss if there's something else you could help with and even demonstrate you could help with IT's set up since you do have a bit of a technical background. That's a huge plus and shows value for your time (instead of getting up and leaving).

I can tell you're not the most patient with this sort of thing. Not everyone's patient of course, but for the future I think you ought to settle your impatience with another more proactive solution. Now look forward! You already learned your mistake.

My first days have always been like that, although generally I've been given some hard copies of things to read through and it's felt like I've gone back in time for a day or two.

IT services and computers are generally the most awkward,even with advance time they aren't always set up correctly.

Well, in fairness, he did go and talk to his boss, and it sounds like she politely said "I don't know what you should be doing, I'm busy, go away." Which, you know, is still a terrible reason to quit a job after 2 hours. But he did try to talk to his boss at least once.

This is common. 2.5 hours is nothing. Some people take weeks before getting up to speed and start doing "real" work.

It's paid on the job training.

You never did internships or anything? You should've been familiar with this type of stuff. Most managers are pretty busy and training new employees is usually last on the priority list.

He was on the company's money and not being asked to do anything that goes against his values or personal well being. This is not "I was called for an interview and had to wait three hours before being called in, without being offered a glass of water and I'm wasting my time because I have actual better things to do.". This is "I was at work and since there's not an IT guy I had a bit of downtime and reacted in a very unprofessional manner.

I'm patient, so I would have stuck out the days/weeks of nothing to do, but would have felt horrible about it.

I sat at my desk for 3 days before anyone even asked me to do anything. It was right in the middle of recruiting season and everyone was busy. I went to my boss after 15 minutes on the first day and she said they'd get around to me, and apologized. I said no problem. I sat until like 3PM that day, asked again, and she was clearly flustered, so I apologized and went back to my desk.

I just walked around to all the departments and introduced myself the next day. Went up to the IT guy and asked how to set up my email and such, he helped me with that. I offered to help organize papers for one of my new co-workers because her desk was a mess. She was super grateful. I saw that a guy was giving a tour of the factory to some college kids and I asked if I could tag along. A couple more little things that were supposedly "beneath my position". This all got back to my boss and she was incredibly impressed. Since then it's been easy street.

So, yes, you fucked up. Think, man. But no, your future is still fine. It's one job. Learn and move on.

After getting told that I screwed up, that I ruined my future, that this is how the corporate world works, I'm feeling very depressed. It definitely hit me that I made a huge mistake. Why don't I just kill myself now and get it over with? I have no future anyway, right? Why does the corporate world work this way?! This is horrible! Maybe I'm not meant to be in a corporate environment. Maybe I'm just meant to make minimum wage and be stuck at some dead-end job.

Buddy, you did fuck up. There's no ifs, ands, ors, buts about it. But, it's not the end of the world. You definitely do have a future and this is only a small bump in the road of your life. Trust me, there are people who have done worse and continue to do worse.

Life's all about picking yourself up after holding losses. The shock/guilt/sadness from this is going to sting for a bit for sure but you will be fine, trust me. Keep at it: I would not mention this event to your future employers but it'll make a funny story to tell folks when you are over it.
