I want to believe but 5D? How is that even possible?

Femtosecond laser writing in transparent materials has attracted considerable interest due to new science and a wide range of applications from laser surgery, 3D integrated optics and optofluidics to geometrical phase optics and ultra-stable optical data storage. A decade ago it has been discovered that under certain irradiation conditions self-organized subwavelength structures with record small features of 20 nm, could be created in the volume of silica glass. On the macroscopic scale the self-assembled nanostructure behaves as a uniaxial optical crystal with negative birefringence. The optical anisotropy, which results from the alignment of nano-platelets, referred to as form birefringence, is of the same order of magnitude as positive birefringence in crystalline quartz. The two independent parameters describing birefringence, the slow axis orientation (4th dimension) and the strength of retardance (5th dimension), are explored for the optical encoding of information in addition to three spatial coordinates. The slow axis orientation and the retardance are independently manipulated by the polarization and intensity of the femtosecond laser beam. The data optically encoded into five dimensions is successfully retrieved by quantitative birefringence measurements. The storage allows unprecedented parameters including hundreds of terabytes per disc data capacity and thermal stability up to 1000°. Even at elevated temperatures of 160oC, the extrapolated decay time of nanogratings is comparable with the age of the Universe - 13.8 billion years. The demonstrated recording of the digital documents, which will survive the human race, including the eternal copies of Kings James Bible and Magna Carta, is a vital step towards an eternal archive.

That way, duh.

Hehe, retardance.

I need to learn to run out of threads the second Colombian women are brought up. :(

Ha, that thread seemed to be heavily biased towards Columbia.

---

<-- This is a likeness of me that was painted for a conference badge, so I'll go with that.

wow at that sentence :D

Snow is starting to fall, free exercise tomorrow

Assuming snowboarding/skiing?
Snow exercise is the best exercise.

New optofluidics tech lets you store data on your face using 6D.

Eye can see how this will be useful.

edit: what do people say about Columbian and Slavic women? I wouldn't even know where to begin if I wanted to be an asshole.

optofluidics.

slavic women = mail order brides or are in porn.

people seem to imply that they're kinky and easy for whatever reason

What the hell are optofluidics. All of a sudden I feel really dumb.

Towards Colombia, yes. :P (Sorry another pet peeve.)

Colombia has a huge beauty culture with insane standards. Its plastic surgery culture isn't quite at the level of South Korea, but it's definitely up there. Colombian women are supposed to be absolutely perfect: big breasts, small hips, big butts, beautiful faces. Everything. To the point where we (Colombian women) feel the need to use plastic surgery to keep up or even be "Colombian."

The majority of adult Colombian women I know have had plastic surgery. (Usually nose or boob jobs.) When I was younger, my mother would call me ugly and stupid every day until I agreed to get a nose job. I have had people tell me I'm too ugly to be Colombian. It just makes me feel like utter shit that I can't claim my identity because I don't look the part. And for Colombian women, looks will always be the number one thing in the majority of people's eyes. On top of all my other self esteem stuff.

Basically, it reminds me that I absolutely fucking fail as a Colombian woman.

I learned to avoid when people start talking about slavic girls right away. it gets real uncomfortable real quick
Man, I can imagine. :/

Only thing I've heard much of along those lines are that lots of strippers are Russian. It's probably a coincidence but I did meet a Russian stripper once.

In any case, let's dispel once and for all with this notion that someone being "easy" is some kind of put down, because it's such a gendered put down. Most men are easy to get into bed, and for some reason no one puts them down for it.

Dude...

I almost never ever get the chance to say this to anyone, so I'm gonna savor it: I'm not sure I like your mom.

I mean, it's part of the culture. If you've got something wrong with you aesthetically, you fix it with surgery. So on the one hand, I understand where my mum's coming from and how she was raised. On the other, the way she did it was really shitty.

It's a double edged sword. I do think plastic surgery shouldn't be looked down upon like it is in the US (by people who can't even tell who's had plastic surgery) and the whole "natural beauty only" thing is bullshit. But it also goes the other way where if it's so ubiquitous, the more people feel the need to get it.

I don't look down upon people for having plastic surgery in any way. I have zero problem with it. I agree with you there. If there's something about yourself you want to change, then do it. That's your call.

But pressuring a child into having it by calling her ugly just makes my fucking skin crawl.

Oh, I was around 19 when it started in earnest so I wasn't a child. Just meant that it happened a while ago. D:

Man, I can imagine. :/
I'm curious about something, does religion affect the use of plastic surgery there? cause here it seems like religious people avoid it like the plague cause of things like "your body is a temple" don't be vain etc

combination of people trying to escape poverty + those types of things being pretty much the only western exposure to those cultures

easy is perhaps the wrong word. Its not just that people seem to think slavic women are up for sex, they seem to think its a given. I guess what I mean is that most guys that perk their ears up at the sound of "slavic" seem to immediately go for the fetish angle.

Towards Colombia, yes. :P (Sorry another pet peeve.)

Whoops! Everyone up here in the states pronounces it with the u sound which screws us up, but I remember hearing about the pet peeve in Narcos or somewhere.

Basically, it reminds me that I absolutely fucking fail as a Colombian woman.

Sounds like there's some pretty messed up social norms down there when it comes to looks.

Started tuning into a local Alternative station

Bring me to Life came on and I thought of you guys
(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can't wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
Bid my blood to run
(I can't wake up)
Before I come undone
(Save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become

I still love Amy lol

thats tough Pau

My mom can't call me ugly because I look a lot like her when I was younger. like its so weird lol when I think about it

but plenty of kids in school did :(

I can't even fathom having your own mother run you down. My mom is incapable of saying something negative about her kids. She's the one person you could go to for unconditional reassurance and acceptance. What do you do without that?

I hate people.

:(

Nah, don't. People can be great. Some aren't. You don't hate videogames just because Sega exists, now do you?

Honestly though, just because people can be shit (and they can), the majority of them is still a-ok :)

The worst I've had is my dad saying I'm fat. And I mean at least that's kind of true, but even that annoys me. Can't even begin to imagine how awful being just straight up called ugly by my parents like that would be

Why we still got David Cameron?

Not that I've seen? Most people are Catholic (although there is a significant Protestant Christian community on the coast and in the islands) but it's kind of more like in Europe than in America as far as practicing or the intensity. The really religious members of my family don't seem to care at all and are okay with having it.

Right, whenever the first thing that comes to mind in regards to a group of women is sex-related, it's not good.

Whoops! Everyone up here in the states pronounces it with the u sound which screws us up, but I remember hearing about the pet peeve in Narcos or somewhere.
Yeah, I know the pronunciation can throw people off, but like... other country's names aren't spelled exactly like how you would think. So it comes off as just not caring. Particularly when you see the spelling in academic texts. Ugh.

thats tough Pau

I don't look anything like my mum so. :P

Kids are mean. :/ I can't say I never did it, but at least it was to a bully who was bothering my sister!

my mom is impressive on the backhanded compliments. she thinks she's helping/motivating but most of the time it just falls flat. at worst well...

she used to tell me "you'd look so good if you were thinner"
less than a year ago she showed me a photo from that time period and said "look how thin you were. if you could get back to that you'd look so good"

-_-

The majority of them ARE ok. You sub-human, baby minded ignoramus.

I'm joking. Don't hate me

Also I agree

You develop depression and self esteem issues. And this is just the stuff in regards to my physical appearance, not personality or ability. :P

That sounds familiar. And yeah, it is an attempt to help, but it's twisted and not very efficient.

This sucks. It's played off as people trying to "help" by giving advice, but it just reinforces the thought that people are judging you based on X or Y trait.

Everyone I've met in real life is a close-minded, shallow, superficial arsehole. Unless you look like Tom Hardy or something, you don't stand a chance meeting people.

Whoops! Everyone up here in the states pronounces it with the u sound which screws us up, but I remember hearing about the pet peeve in Narcos or somewhere.
I just imagine Sofia Vergara saying it CoLOMbia

here its confusing since its more of a social club than anything but for some things its taken pretty seriously. thats one of those things apparently (Catholicism also btw)

its all minor emotional/mental abuse. doesn't help that its hard to be mad at them since they really are trying to help or it ends up with stuff like you voicing your displeasure and them making you sound ungrateful.

I just imagine Sofia Vergara saying it CoLOMbia

Damn, that's good. It's stuck in my head now.

Everyone I've met in real life is a close-minded, shallow, superficial arsehole. Unless you look like Tom Hardy or something, you don't stand a chance meeting people.

Although I understand your point, I think this is a little extreme.

I hate tests like that where it asks hundred questions and ultimately just tells you what you already know.

How big is your social network? Do you like your social network? Then you're going to find a partner in your social network! Yay!

Everyone I've met in real life is a close-minded, shallow, superficial arsehole. Unless you look like Tom Hardy or something, you don't stand a chance meeting people.

Muh, that's harsh. I met a lot of idiots and horribly shallow or self-obsessed people on the way, but also some great ones. May I ask you if you go out at times, or have other options to actually meet new people? Maybe living near a place that could organize a GAF meetup?

Lilith, don't worry :) You're good people and you've got the looks, you'll find someone great for sure. Also stop putting pics and infos in every web app you find lol

edit: Same for Trab. You guys are all crazy, stop being crazy :D

this seemed interesting but I have to admit I gave up half way through :X

You think you were halfway through but at the last page they have a couple of answers that depending on your answers give even more questions.

And then six pages of results, that feel kind of useless to me. Apparently I have very very low standards, which doesn't seem correct to me. Oh well.

I don't know how anyone in FakeGAF has romance trouble TBH, because everyone is way better looking than I expected forum people to be. I remember saying the same thing back in 2013 the first time I participated in RealGAF and it still baffles me. I always expect neckbeards and like... The Mandarin from Iron Man 3's opening

just had a cool conversation with the leadership team at my office about charity goals for the year

kinda fired up atm

I know you care

Yeah. If it helps, I would totally date all the women in this thread. ;)

I met perhaps one or two people in my life who weren't arseholes but, as is life, they moved on with their lives and forgot about me. I try to meet new people using OKCupid and Tinder, but although they do agree to meet up, they lose interest in me after seeing me up close, and I'm clearly not interesting or exciting enough as a person to hold their attention. It can only happen so many times before you begin to question your existence, and wonder what your reason for being here is.

You develop depression and self esteem issues. And this is just the stuff in regards to my physical appearance, not personality or ability. :P

Yeah, not a huge fan of your mom (the novelty of saying this may never wear off). For whatever it's worth, I always thought you were really pretty in the pics you've put on Neogaf. I'm a visionary game dev so that should mean something.

What? Those are such dick moves. I'm having mixed feelings about your mom.

I didn't plan on trashing everyone's moms today but I always thought mothers were a source of unconditional support and acceptance. Apparently that's far from the case.

I don't really have any romance trouble, if it makes you feel better.
