This may be a really daft question...if I am sat at my PC wearing an OR, is the game also displayed on my monitor? Or just the headset?
Headset I believe.
I think the PSVR is the only headset which also outputs to a display.

The game is mirrored to your monitor.
None of these early headsets will gain anything even resemblingPretty much all this. PSVR now has a chance to be an extremely huge hit.
Like the DVD player, right?
Sometimes I get the feeling that most people here are 18 years old. Please look up history (and prices) of new technologies in the past.
Or the blu ray for those too young when the dvd launched.

We will know market dominance is at hand when other groups start joining in on the fun. I really doubt Oculus, HTC and Sony will remain the only big VR players.
Lol, yup. A VCR was priced extremely high when it first launched. Plasma tvs were over 15,000$ when they first came out as well. Now, if u can find one, u can get a 60" for 500-600$ CDN.And for those of us who are really old, the VCR!
Why all the spit-takes and "I'm out lol" posts? Did people honestly expect on par or less than the oculus given the extra hardware?
I'm curious to hear which aspects of this make it the premium one vs Rift. The hardware teardowns should be enlightening.
I'll probably be going for Vive to get access to Lighthouse anyway.
And for those of us who are really old, the VCR!

If it was a PS3 I'd agree with you, but with self publishing, the PS4 is open enough for most commercial experiences to be available - any VR deb making a paid for game would definitely want to bring it to PSVR too.
You're right about the non commercial demos and experiments though and I'm sure many of those will be fascinating

I was expecting 999$, 799$ with controllers and sensors seems good. Oculus with Oculus Touch will be about thia price if not more.
And nobody will buy it either.

I was expecting higher to be completely honest.
Were people really expecting something that is even more advanced than the Oculus to be cheaper? Considering what you are getting with this device, I would say that $799 isn't really all that bad for a first generation model.
^
the value/price ratio looks better than the Oculus
LOL nice bias.
Oculus is going all in on the audio side, while on Vive it seems like an afterthought.
Also better ergonomics on the Rift, and we don't know about the lenses / displays yet.
And we don't know how good or expensive (or cheap?) Touch will be.

Thats why the PS3 was such a good deal even at $599.
as seen by the countless system war threads.Like the DVD player, right?

Can someone explain this one a bit to me? what is the Vive doing to go "all in on the audio side"? For someone like me who is using some top-end headphones and wants to continue using them for VR, does this comment apply to me at all?
no, people were anticipating more than this price actually.
Headset I believe.

Yup still no idea what to get for VR.
If PS VR works with PC then it's looking like a winner, but I'm guessing not.
May just have to wait for them to both be out and see what the comparison is. Which is most comfortable and lightest and offers best experience will win out for me. Prices aren't so far away from each other considering vive includes the motion controllers and oculus doesn't.
Just one usb 2.0 port required? That's a lot better than the 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port the Rift requires.
We'll know what the ultimate difference is later, but with current information Oculus has just invested more in their audio solution as a whole. A good DAC that is optimized for their audio SDK, pretty good quality headphones (not $300 but around $150 - $200 ones according to Palmer) and they're really pushing binaural audio.
Vive comes with standard earbuds and seems more like a "me too" than a long thought feature.
Your headphones will work with both, but won't integrate to the Oculus DAC and some SDK features might be left out, won't know what they are yet.
Seems like we'll be waiting till the 2nd/3rd generation for affordable PC VR. It'll be worth it though. Must.not.give.in.My dreams of affordable PC VR are crushed :/
Oculus dev kits prices really spoiled me.

This thread is incredible.. Not even the simplest technical details can arrive without it being somehow twisted toward something "Sony"..
The DK1 had it 3 years ago, the DK2 had it, the OR CV1 will have it, the Vive will have it, they will most likely all have it.
How is it even possible to come to the conclusion that only PSVR will have monitor output?
