Street Fighter V |OT2| Another Fight Isn't Coming Your Way!

I can't win a single game online and can't beat Normal Survival, I'm trying to read stuff online and understand *how* to play this game but right now it feels a bit like digging through a concrete wall with plastic cutlery.

For example:
- Keep seeing the word tech
- Look it up and barely grasp what exactly it means
- I think one form of 'tech' is cancelling a grab with a grab input of yr own?
- Log into the game and attempt to practise it
- Completely fail and become baffled that some people have the reflexes to pull that off.

I swear so many moves in this game feel like they require you to be psychic. How am I supposed to react or interrupt to someone's attack when it's hit me and I've taken damage before I even recognise what they're doing? Things like Mika's downright-kick which as far as I can understand is a kind of air intercept move?

I'm not so sure it's supposed to be a reflexes thing. The times I've used it effectively are when I predict an opponent will go for a grab, so I pre-emptively go to counter it.

I started winning a few games online when I slowed down. "I think they'll do X, so I'll do Y". Then my win streak was ended by someone far too fast for me to predict. "I think th-" "SHORYUKEN!" "Shit".

So I don't know, but I'd suggest looking for patterns in how your opponent is playing.

After training against AI, watching some streams, and some play against a bud I decided to give ranked a try.

0-10; instantly uninstalled. Never been so angry with a game in my life and goddamn are fighters impenetrable. I only really wanted to play with friends but they're already much better so I figured I'd work my way up the ranks until I could hang; but lo and behold everyone at the very bottom shits on me anyways XD

I share the ps4 and game with my brother...I just learned that I can't use the Cammy costume he redeemed on his account when I'm using my account. What kind of fucking DLC this?

Street Fighter V is teaching me a valuable lesson in handling frustration, haha. It'll probably help outside of the game too. When I lose, as often happens, I immediately try to de-construct what went wrong - "What would I have needed to do to make it a win?".

Oh man, I just came back from some ranked gaming and it was a mess. Tons of Nash and Ken players were swarming ranked. mode My two best fights were probably against a cool Sim and a punkass Bison (both at roughly 2K LP). The Sim player tried his best to control space with that AA fireball of his, but watching Floe fight Champ made me realizing jumping is pointless. Karin's shoulder charge comes in handy for that situation. I managed to take a game off him, but I still lost. He earned that shit by teleporting all around me like a DBZ character, though. I wish I could praise Bison the same way. He took me out in the first fight with mostly footsies and annoying pokes, I ate his life bar up real fast in the second round and I won the third round with a timeout because he decided to stay on the other side of the stage whenever he touched me. The sucker accidentally took a couple of hits by mistake and I won by a sliver of health. It was hilarious and infuriating enough to make me call it a night. I don't understand people who play like that lol.

It's not "psychic" so much as it is being good at probabilities, pattern recognition and risk taking. These are all things that all fighting games require and they're not something you can pick up overnight. For example, if someone walks up to you and jabs you once it is perfectly reasonable to attempt a grab in order to tech their tick throw. If someone neutral jumps and does a jumping move to make for a blockstring (something I do) you should probably throw in order to tech their throw. There is no certainty there, but tens, hundreds and thousands of matches build up muscle memory, pattern recognition and wherewithal that'll make you brave enough to take those educated guesses.

I mean I guess that makes sense because there's what, a 4 frame window to counter? It's just the idea of predicting another persons behaviour is like, alien to me, when honestly I barely know when to use a L,M,H version of my attack. I'm playing Ken and at least with specials I know what they can be used for (eg. hadoken into a DP when they try to jump over it). but like, the speed difference between a medium and heavy punch seems so negligible in not sure what I should be doing from moment-to-moment.

Playing against the AI is not training. Playing against the AI doesn't teach you how to do anything but beat the AI. Do not expect to be able to beat anyone because you played a bit against the AI. Your first few ranked matches are the beginning of your real training, analyze those matches and try to figure out/research what you could do to improve.

I highly recommend you and other newcomers buy the prima strategy guide, the digital copy is on sale for 50% off comes to $4-7 bucks which will give you lots of super useful info like this. It also has detailed glossary so you can learn all the street fighter language.

As for being psychic, getting better is only going to come with continuous play and grinding it out. You react because you know the rules of the game, the movesets of each opponent, their general strategy for big damage, how fast they are and what distance they need to hit you. That is not being a psychic, it is knowing from experience. It's true to any game you play, not just fighting games.

Right now you are losing because:

"I don't recognize what they're doing" (aka I don't know what choice to make)
not because
"I recognized what they are doing but read their play incorrectly" (aka I know my opponent's options but I did not make the right choice).

Game knowledge and learning the rules is only going to come from practice and watching videos to see what's possible

AI does not teach you to play against people. Play against your friends instead of randoms so you can learn.

I'm sure this is useful but it's totally double dutch to me. :P

I totally get the brick wall of terminology as someone who played a few hundred hours of LoL, but at least in a MOBA you have a team of friends to carry you, explain terms, and help learn the strategies.

This is why we have a Street Fighter thread. Make some friends here, ask for matches and post (or PM) back and forth about what you need to improve on or if the character you play is even right for you. Sometimes longtime friends aren't the ideal teachers, but the AI will NEVER be the right choice.

Also, buy Skullgirls next time it is on sale for $2.99 and play the tutorial mode about 20 times. Pay extra attention to the defense section. It won't make you a master, but it'll teach you how to be better at 2D fighting games in general.

I don't remember most of the terms either and I've been playing fighters for 15ish years now. Thankfully forums can make up for that.

I'll check that guide out, thanks.

Do you live near a local scene of people who play fighting games? You'll learn a lot more and much faster if you have people around you who can explain the game to you as things are happening. Locals are where people learn Street Fighter (it's the equivalent of your team in any MOBA). You may not want to get that serious about it and go to local events but if you want to start having fun and getting good sometimes having live people explain the game to you will definitely be extremely beneficial. Most scenes are welcoming of newcomers as well and love teaching people about fighting games.

Won my first online match, yeah !!! The other guy clearly didn't know what the hell he was doing though. Is Rashid supposed to be beginner-friendly ?

Rashid is only beginner friendly insofar that other beginners will have a hell of a time dealing with his shenanigans. If anything, he seems to me like the kind of character that can teach you a lot of bad habits .. but he's lots of fun to play though.

I actually do live a ten minute walk from an enthusiast-run arcade with probably the biggest SF scene in London...

I just kinda wanted to get at least a little better before I tried going there, I didn't wanna be like the kid with his knee-pads and helmet at the skatepark getting in the way of the people who know what they're doing.

So what? That's a bad attitude to have in competitive games. Just give it time and you'll start doing better.

Just encountered my first rage quitter. I was rookie and he was bronze. At such a low rank, what do you really have to lose? So infuriating.

Totally understandable and I think that's a good idea, absorb as much information as you can now and then when you feel ready hit up your local scene and wait for the real fun to begin. :)

Guys... bought the game Day 1 and I'm still in 'Chun Li looks so kawaii' phase, barely even touched online. Am I doing it wrong? xD

LOVE THE GAME between, scrubby as I am. It's clearly a platform for a bright future.

You sound exactly like Capcom....

Time for my nightly attempt at getting online matches, post "fixes". Lets see if it did any good.

Peak time, lots of squares on the map, lets do this.

I went from 1500 LP to under 800 LP over the course of about 15-20 losses straight; 25 including casual matches. I deranked twice. Nearly 3 times.

Then I went into my replays, saw my problems, practiced, and now I'm back to 1500. Don't give up. Practice.

Break out of your box, or whatever the commerical says.

I was just trying to get the hang of what the different moves were, punishing and doing those confirm combos. All the friends I have are 1000+ LP and have played SF in the past. Thought there'd be others that are brand new to SF and after a handful of loses I'd get thrown in Dogshit Newbie tier. I don't know if there's a hidden MMR but at 0 LP I have literally nowhere lower to go and folks there are obviously way more experienced.

Think it's a mistake for the LP to work like it does because in something like Dota there's always brand new players and their MMR may start at 2k but if they get wrecked there they'll drop even lower. Having nowhere to go but up in this case kinda sucks; I'd rather go negative 500 and get matched against other clueless fucks. Their implementation is just really offputting to brand new players and I wouldn't be surprised I wasn't the only one turned away from trying to get into the game because of it; it's just not the most fun way to learn a new game.

I mean I guess that makes sense because there's what, a 4 frame window to counter? Just keep playing. The more you play, the more you start to recognize what is going on .. at least that is my experience. Experience will teach you when it is a good idea to tech, since you'll start recognizing patterns in when people want to go for a throw, and when you, yourself would want to go for a throw.

With regards to using the L, M, or H version of your attack, that boils down to knowing how they differ. Often, the difference boils down to the light version reaching further / being faster, but not doing so much damage, and the heavy version being shorter ranged / slower, but hitting harder. Which version you can / should use thus depends on when you are using it (e.g. one version may work in a combo, but another might not), but if in doubt then just use whatever version and see what works. You don't need complete mastery of your specials right out the gate, but if you want to figure it out, then the training room (and the internet!) is your friend.

Also, if you enjoy watching streams, then be sure to find and follow somebody playing the same character(s) that you want to learn. Watching people who know what they are doing is extremely helpful, in my experience.

My first 10 ranked matches I went 1-9. I got frustrated and took a break and watched what I did via replay. I then strung together a nice win streak and feeling alot more confident, almost at 1000LP now. Just takes practice and patience and it will get better. Keep your head up if you are struggling!

Rashidoooo!

The problem is that when you do that, people sit there, lose 20 games to drop to -afuckton and then start winning matches against new players for fight money.

Repeat until the business model is wrecked.

So "can't have nice things etc".

The good news is you are probably not as bad as you think. My tips to get started:
* Pick a character who has good/easy anti-airs. For example Zangief and just press three punch buttons. This will let you beat most beginners because they will otherwise destroy you with jump ins.
* Then learn how to get past fireballs. Generally every character will have a "way". This lets you beat players who have not got past the jump in stage.
* Then learn how to fix your servers so I can get a fucking match.

15 minutes down...zero matches, booted from the server once.

I know they broke some stuff. I can't even log in now. SFVServer's twitter is getting hit by others who can't either, so :/

IT IS WORKING FINE, BUT WHERE IS YOUR PROOF! etc etc.

glad it is not just me...sort of

I can totally agree with this, they should've done something more akin to Starcraft/CS:GO where your first few matches are to place you in a skill group and then match you within/near that group.

I share the ps4 and game with my brother...I just learned that I can't use the Cammy costume he redeemed on his account when I'm using my account. What kind of fucking DLC this?

It's all account based. It's unfortunately not new, but it basically flags the individual PSn account as having access to things.

Just encountered my first rage quitter. I was rookie and he was bronze. At such a low rank, what do you really have to lose? So infuriating.

Unfortunately, as there's no penalty for quitting and there's a trophy for 4k league points, people are going to keep doing it until its fixed.

Get new friends! Wait, that came out wrong .. Get more friends!
Either by match-making on GAF, or by messaging people you meet in ranked or in battle lounges: When you meet somebody around your level (and on your platform), simply send them a friend-request / message thanking them for the match, and ask them if they want to play some more matches. A lot of people will be open to a friendly invitation, and if you continue doing this, then you'll end up with a bunch of people that you can learn the game with, and playing in lounges cuts down a lot on the waiting time (especially if you set it to a FT10, or similar, so that you don't have to go through reloads between every match), allowing you to get more experience under your belt, faster. I did this when I first started out with Street Fighter IV a couple of years ago, and it helped me a lot.

22 win streak ken..... yep prob a rage quitter
*is shit* sigh this is going to be a waste of time
*kill him with ex shoureppa*
*d/c*

good shit capcom.

quick rise input is press down the instant you're knocked down right? or have i been doing it all wrong since beta? lol
Down for rise in place and down-back for the backward roll.

I know there's another button input for it, but I've been doing the directional way since third strike, I'm set in my ways.
IT IS WORKING FINE, BUT WHERE IS YOUR PROOF! etc etc.

What the fuck... so I assume no dc penalty either
Great, right? Probably no penalty, unless the not being able to connect is the dc penalty, heh. I know disconnected from two matches that were complete laggy shitshows.
