NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

Me likey mikey. I'd love to see some more tonal ranges in your skin work!

Ah these are cute! I keep seeing these witchsona things pop up everywhere and I kind of want to do one but lord knows I wouldn't get it done in time....

I finished this

I...had a good time painting this. Now I have a list of guys with horns to paint with my commissioners. Nsfw tush tush. I still feel like I could have spent another like, 20 hours on this. I've lost track of time. I always feel my work is so out of place here sometimes. I should draw some animu or some shit.
It's only because I have.. started posting that there's so much animu.. Hwahaha..

You have so many beautiful people lined up for your hand though.. you must.. persevere!!!
I should make you draw all my horned mens too.. ~_~
(And man, I would but my dollar has been trashed so badly I might have to wait until the Canadian dollar dead-man-floats back nearer to the surface. lol)

Thank you! Do mean in contrast or hue variety? At first I had more red blues and yellows in the skin but they definitely got muted out.

A friend of mine has been going through with some master studies lately and gave me a few pointers. She mentioned doing certain blush tones before applying the base coat (something similar to how she layer with color pencils). I'm really excited to try that out.

Yeah, I do mainly mean some tonal variation, or colour variation. There is definetly a bit of it there already, but as you said it seems to get drowned out. I think this is mainly due to using a "lighter" shade of your base colour and similarly a "darker" shade of the same base colour without and shift in pigment. This is all personal taste though and what I see of course. What I could suggest though is try using a different tint to highlight your skin tones. Good luck with your master studies as well. I've never heard of adding blush tones before doing a base, that does sound pretty interesting...

a sfw crop of the speed painting for the winner of my charity raffle - full thing is here. I want to start pulling my values a bit closer together...and I really need to practice low key more properly. It's difficult for me to keep the right range of values when painting low key. I just need to study generally gosh.

Been participating in the Global Game Jam all weekend long. Since my role is more or less done (read: I'm bored), here's my share of assets that I contributed (there's a second artist that did the backgrounds and most of the props as well as programming). Our game is probably not gonna be finished by the deadline and we're okay with that.

Good luck with the game; what is it of?

Sketch for today.

Lines looking clean again; so I've not forgotten about the folds you were asking about - I'll be getting to that this weekend for sure....maybe even this evening.

Just some sketches. I opened a moleskine that was just sitting around from 2 christmases ago since I didn't use up my others. I get distracted by the old art in the other ones so I figured may as well use a new one.

1 hour, 1.5, .5 hours. I've not sketched freely for some time now and it feels really nice.

Also finished another speed paint commission

Not sure about the time with this one... I have really mixed feelings about the colour combination. I keep having to use so much green and it just aint my thing.

Found a brush that related opacity with pressure on procreate. I think I am in there. I originally started with a base coat and merged but I'm just painting over the lines now. I like it so far, gonna really focus on tightening up as much as I can without lines but we'll see.

Reference sketches from the past two weeks. (Lots of large images)

This is a bit of a first for me but I actually designed something from scratch today, pretty much everything I've done until now has been from reference.

In it's design I was aiming for more of an unsettling feeling, rather than outright intimidating. On the left is the shape of the horns, in horizontal slices, and to the right is a modified cross fleury, which is sitting on top of the head forming the fake "eye" of a strange laughing face you may see if you look closely...

^ That is amazing!

I've still been drawing everyday, just been too lazy to take pictures and upload my sketches (plus my upload speed is only like 1mbps). Will post them sometime tomorrow.

The game that we ended up making was called Soul Split. Unfortunately we didn't finish it that half of the mechanics and assets were split between two laptops. I didn't stay in contact with the rest of my team other than the programmer dude who I became fast friends with over the weekend and followed each other on Twitter so that game is in the backburner. I told him I would be down to collaborate with him to make a mobile game in the future as a personal project. Not sure if making art for games is in my future but I won't rule it out since I've thought about it in the past.

I don't post art regular since I've been lacking discipline but have been toiling away at some stuff. Digital paintings I haven't touched in about a month.

Gesture sketches and other pencil drawings from last month in the link; the Sora selfie is a rough WIP commission for a friend that's been put on hold:

Noteworthy ink drawings from the past month to as recent as today in chronological order (I got this sketchbook as X-Mas gift for time frame context):
Hooded steampunk character; used bulletproof vest reference images for the armor. It may or may not become something bigger/part of a series.

Grabbed a Muji pen, let my mind relax, started inking shapes and this was the result

Subway sketches from the past few days since my phone got messed up and I lost somewhere around subway 60 sketches I did on it (Galaxy Note 3). I have a few posted on Twitter. :(

Last but not least, a self-portrait that I started last night on the bus ride home and polished up throughout today (my beard isn't that shaggy yet though). Will probably make it my avatar after a few adjustments in Photoshop. The lower half of my body was more of an afterthought that hence the unfinished hands.

Need to make it a habit to post art regularly in this thread and the Self-Study thread. I always lurk in the Arts and Farts thread.

Been drawing mainly eyes for the last few days. Got a bunch of pages. Most of them looked terrible (to me), but the batch from today turned out great. Though, they're all pretty similar. Two are from actual photos, and the other three my own attempts.

Also did this....thing. Don't know what the hell I was attempting here, so I just stopped before it got worse, haha.

Starting to really enjoy working with one layer.

Tones are working together a bit more in this one I think. One layer is the best layer ʅʕ•ᴥ•ʔʃ

Yeah I've yet to make my début in the Study thread which I plan to soon, I just need to actually write out the parts of something I was supposed to be posting in there for DEATH but I keep making myself busy with all sorts of crap. And it's a shame its been put on hold. Sometimes I think it takes a few projects before you can get one off the ground. Learning what things to avoid and all that with the one you work on next. Good luck all the same!

I wanted to work on my design, posing and general creativity so I've asked people to submit their characters to me for me to remake them into Boss enemies. I've only done two so far, and there are about 21 characters that I'd really like to work on so far. I'll probably have to cull the number as I make more though as they're taking me about 4 hours each. At least these two have:

The idea is for me to give them each a weapon, a ridiculous outfit and equally ridiculous name. I'm still working on how I'll want to present them in the end - I like the idea of giving them cheesy quotes as well cause one thing that always annoyed me is the 1 or 2 lines a boss would repeat for the hour you were trying to fight them...

It's fun but its hard work. I didn't realise how bad I was at fitting a whole body on a single piece of paper until yesterday. Jesus. My outfit making abilities are simply lame.

I did a nsfw butt last night, but I'll post this fan art I did a few days ago from where I was trying out a different brush.

Tones are working together a bit more in this one I think. One layer is the best layer ʅʕ•ᴥ•ʔʃ

Then I must go deeper 😤

At this point I definitely feel like I'm getting too hung up on my opacity then. I'll work harder on the next one!

So what's a good resource on doing the whole shapes thing for figure drawing? I can't seem to grasp the concept for the life of me.

Edit: ^ Man I really wish I could color and shade worth a damn.

Loomis is a fantastic resource. Another thing I would try is to set up a Pinterest account and follow tags like anatomy reference or figure posing and possibly other umbrella terms like character design or concept art.

It's gives a nice point of reference, most of my dashboard is different interpretations on how to break down the body into basic shapes. It ultimately comes down to experimentation.

As an aside, the first thing that comes into my mind when trying to break down something is an episode of the Simpsons where Marge learns to Art. I wish I had a gif

Cool, thanks!

Its been a long time since I've drawn. I'm pretty terrible but I want to get better and contribute to this thread :P

Are there any sources to learn how to draw better?

Portrait commission for a couple. Took me a billion hours because I'm slow, and I had to get the likeness right. Original attempts were massively off the mark, but this came out much better. I dread to think how many hours I spent on it. Pretty embarrassing - I badly need to speed up.

I mean did the commissioners complain it took long and thus demanded to pay less?
Ah, no. I got paid in advance. They said they needed it for the 18th Feb, but I said I'd aim to finish it by 10th Feb (deadlines with a buffer help everyone). I told them I needed more time, and offered a refund, but they were happy to wait until the 14th.

Might be my only FE: Fates fanart for a while..
My characters dressed as Corrin as I try to decide who to play as first on Hoshido path.
I heavily referenced and used the same poses from the original official artwork, but I changd things to suit my characters a bit more, like transforming the ugly sword into a dagger and spear. :D
elly_and_ennes_as_corrin_by_meibatsu-d9scwgr.png

Took 3-4 hours, I think?
I get really annoyed when trying to colour things and it seems like it takes so long, but I usually like the results of something fun to look at so I guess I will have to continue to suffer.

Ahhh so many nice arts!!!!
I want to do.. clean lineart inks now. But alas. I am.. quite the mess with traditional media.

Very quick FE: Fates-ish comic! Based on Elly's "decision"ing skills. Spoilertagged just in case. Also my OCs inserted into role of Corrin and Camilla. :D
