sketch might look better lol

Time Spent: 1 hour
Medium: PaintTool SAI, Wacom Bamboo Pen/Tablet
Notes: Been having fun sketching heads, so I drew another one! Looks a lot like Zero Suit Samus, mostly because I sampled the colors from her Smash 4 design. Also, ponytails. Was doing a bit of lineart earlier, but I'm honestly having more fun coloring over sketches like this. Really dig this kind of style.

I'm starting out.

I'm finding the Wacom a bit tricky, or maybe it's Sketchbook, but I'm not happy with the brush strokes. Considering the iPad Pro.

^ Oh, if I remember, I'll try! I still have a couple of things I have to get done before the deadline though, so we'll see.. (also.. I am not really a fanart portrait/celeb type of person. lol)

Newest thing!

Maybe 4 hours..?

I love the background. Did you create it?

^^^Holy crap dude! That looks fantastic. I love the maritime setting since something about it works incredibly well emphasizing the mecha while giving it a serene vibe. I want to say it's the flatness/hard edges of the blues that give it a semi-graphic design look. It makes me want to go get back into digital painting.

I finally finished up and submitted this commission to my client, my former English professor yesterday. It's his mother and sister who passed away. He provided me with an old reference photo from the 80s and specifically asked that I include a green halo and violet in some kind of way which was his sister's favorite color:

The rest was all researched and based on South Korea's color meanings e.g. Red and blue mean life and death and are also part of the South Korean flag; the White, black, blue, red, and yellow stripes are a historical pattern that is said protect royalty and families from evil spirits.

He was pretty moved when I gave it to him as he spoke of them that he had a few tears at one point as we were chatting and thanked me in Korean complete with a bow. I was incredibly humbled to do this since I was moved when he first mentioned that his sister had passed away from cancer back in January. To have a piece of art help someone heal and deal with loss is a huge honor.

That's pretty incredible. I'm glad you were able to help someone out like that; it really does give art substance - especially when you know the purpose of it and what everything means behind it. I hope you'll find yourself in many more rewarding situations.

I haven't posted in here for ages despite being very busy and drawing a lot of stuff. I finished this "speedpaint" commission today:

sunnyfsrzkbw.jpg

Which is a companion piece I did for a painting a little over a year ago. The commissioner has their own imagined version of Sunny Emmerich, in which she is slightly older, short hair, and has a thing for red lipstick. It was really interesting when I put it next to the old Ocelot painting.

I could see how much my style had developed in a single year and how my decision making had changed in a lot of ways. I wish I could say in complete confidence that everything about my style is better but I still have reservations as to how I've changed over time. I've done both of these in relatively the same amount of time (between 5 - 7 hours).

I want to do some more adventurous paintings.

If by create you mean "scanned in a piece of corkboard from the dollarstore" then yes! :D
That's my thing... scanning in "cool" textures to overlay onto my artwork for extra interest. :>

I did a lineart collab with one of my friends. I added in the girls and she's going to eventually colour it:

Hey Art Gaf! I post mostly in the Arts and Farts thread (which has been a bit quiet lately) I've been lurkin' this thread for a bit now, and wanted to post some stuff I've been doing recently.

I went to the Natural History Museum in LA and took a few pictures in their gems and stones exhibition. I got the idea to turn some of those images into creature drawings.

Hopefully I can post regularly in here. It's great to see everyone's improvement over time.

Ohh I really like this idea! I have a real soft spot for minerals and gems. Would love to see more. Also welcome to the thread!

Sketch commission I did for today

Can't recall the length of time since I was in and out the house and what not throughout the day. Wish I could spend more time on it though to fix some errors...

Thanks! Love the line weight in your drawing.

Here is another bug.

doing john j. park's uninstructed foundation practice. the first lesson is silhouettes. I cranked some out, some are better than others. I tried playing with poses and depth and some are more successful than others

Listening to Trump, reading the PSVR-thread and taking a look into the DoAX3 topic inspired me to draw a little something on the back of 2 envelopes.

Don't worry about material quality for now. You can really just use any 2B pencil and copy paper/newsprint if you're an absolute beginner. You're going to be going through a lot of drawings, so it's best to have something accessible and cheap. I personally make my students use a cheap spiral-bound sketchbook so they can see their progress.

I would also read "Drawing on The Right Side of The Brain". That "Learn to Draw in 30 Days" book will be good for keeping you on track if you are dedicated enough to draw every day for 30 days straight.

I basically went for cheap with good reviews, it's only £7.44 for everything which is a great price to jump into a new hobby. I've always put off drawing because of my back problems but I'm getting some steroid injections tomorrow so this is my way of thinking positively by buying this stuff in the hopes I can actually sit at a desk to use them after tomorrow. I'm really excited to draw my first circle :D

My friend's doing nanoreno (march renpy month!)!

So here are her characters for it (this was part of a sketchtrade I did with her, but I went.. overboard to encourage her! :D)!

3.5 hours? Phew! It felt more like 5-6 to be honest. I have to take more breaks.

lol. SUUUUPERRRR LATE secret santa for Slayers-Santa tumblr!

Lina Inverse and Xellos doing some kind of immortality pledge while Lord of Nightmares and Zelas Metallium look on.

It was do or die (they would have handed this off to a pinch-hitter if I didn't finish by today) so.. terrible procrastinator me.. screamed internally while getting this done in 5.5 hours today.. I should have.. just set aside time months ago..

Everyone makes such cool robots and technically challenging stuff and all I draw are cute animeles and animu. Hwahha~

Okay.. last one for a while!!!!

A character that kind of appeared in my dream (as a half-sister to another character), so I thought I may as well start trying to design her. Nothing's final yet:

2+ hours?

I've wanted to participate in this thread for ages but it just never really happened. Instead , most of the time I've spent drawing a web comic.

I only just put it up in January so the art is a couple years old at this point but hey, it's something right ?

You can check it out here if you want. I'd be very happy to have anyone read it out side of my group of real life friends. It's kind of a stupid comic but I've had fun drawing it with a friend. To anyone wondering - I've hosted it at comic fury , which seems to have a rather nice setup for anyone just starting out with any kind of web comic.

I guess this is technically against the rules, but here's some drawings of Aerith I copied 5ish years ago before I quit drawing.

I got decent at copying stuff after a couple of months of practice, but could never produce anything good on my own so I just kinda quit.

Got my stuff today so this is my first ever drawing, I'm following the book "How to draw in 30 days", so here's day one.

I was really happy with my whole apple but the apple half looks weird and I'm not sure why?

the shading doesn't quite follow the form of the cut. the cut surface of an apple should be flat but the shading makes it look rounder.

what a great start! keep it up! can't wait to see your next posts.

OK thanks, I'll definitely revisit the cut apple at some point as I really wasn't happy with it. If all goes well I'll be uploading every day, by the end you start drawing more interesting things which I'm looking forward to.

Some.. 7 hours of fun.. .. I didn't think it would take so long. >__>

I'm not very adventurous with perspective stuff, so here's me trying a little.. lol

This is how my wip looked in the beginning:

I just started following this book too, although I'm not a complete beginner I definitely didn't get much farther than this. I was okay at copying things but didn't get my own style down. What I've done from the book so far is just refreshing what I learned in Highschool so far but it does make me cringe a bit looking at what I got done, since you'd never know at all by looking at it that I've drawn anything at all before :/.

This takes a good deal of experience and should never be a conscious worry. It's very much a thing that comes naturally as you improve.

Style is something that you should not focus on as a beginner. You should focus on making sure you can draw what you see and are able to draw a variety of subjects and basic shapes from different angles.

After you feel reasonably comfortable in your drawing ability, then you can think of approach, which leads to style.

And I mean comfortable in drawing ability, not satisfied, because satisfaction will never happen.

I swear I'll post some new drawing tomorrow

Lesson 2 seemed to be more about knowledge than drawing, but I still did a bit! Tennis Balls came out OK, better than that damn apple half yesterday at least! :D

I think I should maybe be using a darker pencil for outline though? I used a 2B today, with 5H for drafting.

You can if you want, but it's not necessary. I went to a modelling session recently and primarily used a just 4H and a 2B and still got good practice with depth in. I only broke out the darker pencils when the model posed for longer periods.

Another thing to consider is that the darker pencils are very noticeably softer, making it much harder to get clean lines, if that's what you want.

Don't discount the importance of knowledge. Knowledge is the most important part of any artistic pursuit.

I wouldn't worry too much about what tools you are using at this point. Many beginner artists get wrapped up in what tools to use, when in reality the tools are near the bottom on level of importance. 2B is a nice all-rounder lead too.

Are there any YT tutorials you guys can point me towards to learn how to draw? The very, very, very basics.

I'm taking an art class at my college (well, it is art mixed with art history) and I want to try and get a leg up. We did our first drawing exercise today (drawing a bunch of objects on a table), but the professor pretty much threw us in the water and didn't give us pointers or anything.

Did this one yesterday of Phife.

Did this one today of Garry Shandling.

No way I can submit a drawing a day as much as I would LOVE to. It just happens in waves.

Proko and Sycra channels are good for the basics.
