^^^Holy crap dude! That looks fantastic. I love the maritime setting since something about it works incredibly well emphasizing the mecha while giving it a serene vibe. I want to say it's the flatness/hard edges of the blues that give it a semi-graphic design look. It makes me want to go get back into digital painting.
I finally finished up and submitted this commission to my client, my former English professor yesterday. It's his mother and sister who passed away. He provided me with an old reference photo from the 80s and specifically asked that I include a green halo and violet in some kind of way which was his sister's favorite color:
The rest was all researched and based on South Korea's color meanings e.g. Red and blue mean life and death and are also part of the South Korean flag; the White, black, blue, red, and yellow stripes are a historical pattern that is said protect royalty and families from evil spirits.
He was pretty moved when I gave it to him as he spoke of them that he had a few tears at one point as we were chatting and thanked me in Korean complete with a bow. I was incredibly humbled to do this since I was moved when he first mentioned that his sister had passed away from cancer back in January. To have a piece of art help someone heal and deal with loss is a huge honor.
I love the background. Did you create it?
Hey Art Gaf! I post mostly in the Arts and Farts thread (which has been a bit quiet lately) I've been lurkin' this thread for a bit now, and wanted to post some stuff I've been doing recently.
I went to the Natural History Museum in LA and took a few pictures in their gems and stones exhibition. I got the idea to turn some of those images into creature drawings.
Hopefully I can post regularly in here. It's great to see everyone's improvement over time.
definitely going to develop it more.
Ohh I really like this idea! I have a real soft spot for minerals and gems. Would love to see more. Also welcome to the thread!
Sketch commission I did for today
Can't recall the length of time since I was in and out the house and what not throughout the day. Wish I could spend more time on it though to fix some errors...
Don't worry about material quality for now. You can really just use any 2B pencil and copy paper/newsprint if you're an absolute beginner. You're going to be going through a lot of drawings, so it's best to have something accessible and cheap. I personally make my students use a cheap spiral-bound sketchbook so they can see their progress.
I would also read "Drawing on The Right Side of The Brain". That "Learn to Draw in 30 Days" book will be good for keeping you on track if you are dedicated enough to draw every day for 30 days straight.
Got my stuff today so this is my first ever drawing, I'm following the book "How to draw in 30 days", so here's day one.
I was really happy with my whole apple but the apple half looks weird and I'm not sure why?
the shading doesn't quite follow the form of the cut. the cut surface of an apple should be flat but the shading makes it look rounder.
what a great start! keep it up! can't wait to see your next posts.
How else will you learn and get better if you don't try?trying to force myself to do something and I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't have
OK thanks, I'll definitely revisit the cut apple at some point as I really wasn't happy with it. If all goes well I'll be uploading every day, by the end you start drawing more interesting things which I'm looking forward to.
I just started following this book too, although I'm not a complete beginner I definitely didn't get much farther than this. I was okay at copying things but didn't get my own style down. What I've done from the book so far is just refreshing what I learned in Highschool so far but it does make me cringe a bit looking at what I got done, since you'd never know at all by looking at it that I've drawn anything at all before :/.
I think I should maybe be using a darker pencil for outline though? I used a 2B today, with 5H for drafting.
Don't discount the importance of knowledge. Knowledge is the most important part of any artistic pursuit.Lesson 2 seemed to be more about knowledge than drawing, but I still did a bit! Tennis Balls came out OK, better than that damn apple half yesterday at least!

Proko and Sycra channels are good for the basics. Are there any YT tutorials you guys can point me towards to learn how to draw? The very, very, very basics.
I'm taking an art class at my college (well, it is art mixed with art history) and I want to try and get a leg up. We did our first drawing exercise today (drawing a bunch of objects on a table), but the professor pretty much threw us in the water and didn't give us pointers or anything.
There are less characters, the perspective isn't as tilted, and less full bodies.. yet why did this take just as long? :l (probably the hair lol)
It looks quite good though.
