What do you think Hillary's game plan will be come general election time?

I think too many people are banking on the strategy that the majority of Americans will come to their better senses and vote for Hillary over Trump. Now that she'll have Bernie out of the way by the 15th at the latest she'll have a good amount of time to re calibrate for the fall.

How will she be able to dodge Trump's bullying? She isn't Jeb but she sure as hell can't work a crowd or communicate like her husband could.

My worst fear is that Trump will just be unstoppable, but if he does win that would just show he soul less and empty the modern Democratic Party has become. .
 
I feel like Donald's bullying and no actual talk of realistic policies he would enact as president won't get him very far during the lead up to the election. He can get away with it now, but people hopefully want more substance by that point.

I have a feeling she'll be able to handle Trump in a debate.

Part of why Trump has been able to steamroll others within the GOP primary is because their attacks against him are limited. So much of what he says are still basic interpretations of the GOP platform, but with the volume turned up to 11. They can criticize his tone, but they can only go so far on criticizing his platform without dismantling the entirety of the GOP platform in the process.

In a general election debate the Democratic nominee will not be burdened by such restrictions.

The American people are so used to dumbed down politics I'm not sure Hillary's wonkishness will matter. She'll have to work on turning out the base. (Genius strategy right?)
 
The idea of Trump in the GE makes me wish Obama could still run. He would destroy Trump as he has already done in a few of his private speeches and at the correspondents dinner. Obama has the right mix of gravitas, humor, and snark to make Trump look so so small.

The difference is that Trump was attacking people further right them him on most all policies besides immigration. Trump had the centrist ground and could bully because of it. Hillary just has to point out that he's a fucking moron. She has the centrist high ground. Don't forget the star power that she is going to have campaigning for her. The sitting president and VP, the last democratic president who is adored by minorities almost as much as our current president and I would imagine Bernie will do his duty and get behind her fully.
 
She'll try and hold the Obama Coalition together, it will help that she'll have Bill and Obama out campaigning for her. Other then that it's just a matter of keeping Democratic turnout up. Vs Trump that should be... less then difficult. Verse anyone else, in the off chance something stumps the Trump, she'll have to hammer home how important this election is in preventing regression on what gains progressives have made the last eight years. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Early polling in 2008 had even more Hillary supporters refusing to vote for Obama then Sanders supports refusing to vote for Hillary. Like in 2008 they'll either come around when the see the alternative on the republican side, or they where frankly unlikely to vote anyway.
 
trump will speak over Hillary and destroy her because of the scandals. we she tries to explain hell just go "oh ok SURE TOUGH GUY!!!" like he did Jeb.

Actually I think you have a point and that's the exact same problem Hillary has had in her primary. She's had to be really subdued in her attacks on Bernie because she doesn't want to alienate more left wing voters.
 
I still don't know how Trump would survive a one-on-one debate. He only survives the RNC debates because he's able to retreat into the deep field.
 
I feel like everyone is downplaying what kind of craziness we're going to see from Trump supporters down the line. I'm expecting some ultra-racist, nativist, Joe the Plumber style insanity on a greater scale than we saw in 2008. These are not the kinds of people who endear themselves to the general population.

Look, Hilary is a pretty damn good debater and is very knowledgeable about pretty much everything that could be thrown at her. Whether or not that will be a critical fact in the general remains to be seen, because so far Trump's campaign has proven successful outside of most of the traditional campaigning forums/mediums.

So, I'm not totally sure.

Jeb is no Hillary. To reiterate, she will be attacking from a centrist position whereas Jeb and everybody else in the GOP race were attacking from a common-ground position. Their attacks couldn't hit the mark because they had to be lightened up due to them being from the same platform.

Trump's best path to victory in the general is this precisely. Disaffected, bitter young liberals might snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Hillary's best inoculation would be to pick Bernie as VP and unite the party.
 
I think it's important to recognize that even with voter disillusionment with the establishment on the rise in both parties, there is nothing to indicate that the GE political landscape favors Trump at all.

I don't think it's necessary and I definitely don't think she would like the idea at all. The problem would be that the GOP winner will attack the VP as a socialist pretty heavily in the GE. Would it be worth the Bernie voters to also alienate centrists? I think no but it would be a tough call.
 
Think the gender card will deflect his most hostile bullying. Sure seems like he's avoiding Megyn Kelly rather than risk an outburst.
 
Many of the republican candidates got stumped by trump because their positions in the debates essentially have boiled down to "well immigration is bad but it's like sort of not all that bad? I think I met a nice Muslim one time so I think well maybe blocking some of them would be ok but I dunno because some of them aren't all that bad. Also lets put in a flat tax and tie the dollar to gold.. I think those would be good ideas maybe. I dunno I haven't done the math".

Hillary isnt going to have that problem.


Also calling things he's said sexist will literally melt him down on stage. He can't handle it. He's still pissed at Megyn Kelly asking him that question about the things he's said about women in the past. He'll get so flustered if she keeps on it that he'll lose it. Republicans wouldn't dare to call him that on stage because they want his base

Maybe they could be missing something, but, according to the polls, there is not a large amount of Dem primary voters that will only vote for one candidate and not the other.
 
Democrats will come together at the convention and after. This primary has not been as divisive as some make it out to be. Young liberal voters may not be energized about Hillary now, but they will turn out and they will be energized to vote against any GOP candidate. Only that slim cross-section of libertarian-minded liberals will sit out or vote Trump/GOP.

No. It wasn't necessary for Obama to pick Hillary as his VP to form a coalition between the two support camps in 2008, and to be honest I don't think either Bernie or Hillary would be wild about the idea.

I remember Democrats sweating around Feb/March of 2008 about how the divisions in the camps would let John McCain glide into the White House.

It's really embarrassing how bad they were. But as others have pointed out, they'd have to attack a caricature of their own base to go at him.

Hillary is going to feast on Trump in debates, and Obama will be out on the campaign trail. I assume Bernie will be out there too. Trump is a Republican problem and that's it.
 
Most of the GOP candidates haven't even tried to take on Trump. Nobody has run any ads against him! Maybe there was one flight.

Everybody just sat around assuming he would go away at some point and by the time it became clear he wouldn't it was too late.

In the general this won't be true. There will be exactly one opponent and like half a billion dollars of money to spend. There's no reason not to spend it all on Trump. And it's not like you have to stretch the truth! Just random snapchats of Trump having a normal day is enough to turn off the average voter.

Also keep in mind that the GOP establishment itself is going to be fractured. Marco Rubio is not going to stand up at the GOP convention and talk about the next President of the United States, Donald Trump. (Although Jeb might.) Some members of the establishment will fall in line with Trump, while others will keep trying to blast him. It's going to be a chaotic electoral season for the entire Republican party, which is exactly why they're worried that they'll lose votes downticket.

Primaries just aren't general elections.

I feel like I've repeated this a lot over the past few days since the Nevada primaries, but:
it's only February.

Sure, if these divisions feel more significant by convention time than they do now I'd grow a little more concerned, but I feel like so many people today saying they're abstaining if their candidate doesn't win are venting.

I like how the Demo debate has been really...tame. Its legit politics. Boring as fuck yeah but its politics and not some media showboat.
