Eurogamer: AC art used for Uncharted 4 trailer (Up: Naughty Dog responds)

I don't understand why things like this can't just be seen as a complement to the original concept artist. It's not like that picture on the wall is some vital part of the game, or that anyone playing it really even gives a damn. Game isn't going to make more money because of this picture on the wall. I'd think an artist would just be happy to have the exposure.

How exactly does uncredited art give the artist any exposure?

Well, at least they managed to steal from a better franchise I suppose.
It's a bit disappointing you are a mod... because people responding to this post will actually contain themselves and not tell you exactly how they feel right now after reading this, LOL.

I agree btw ;P

Pretty embarrassing but not the end of the world, it was most likely not intentional. Even if some people in this thread are probably currently standing next to a wall filled with ND artwork pictures with string tying them all together like they are Carrie fucking Matheson. When you outsource you can run into some issues like this. The picture is of something pretty generic. That kind of natural arch appears in all kinds of media. For example something very similar is right beside Costa Del Sol in FFXIV by the crab FATE. So I could see overlooking that it was ripped off concept art.

My thoughts in better words.

Naughty Dog just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about developing concept art (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like being a game director, where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw over a fellow concept artist, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the gaming public that plays Ubisoft games, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Uncharted 4, nor will they purchase any of Sony's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Naughty Dog has alienated an entire market with this move.

Naughty Dog, publicly apologize and cancel Uncharted 4 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

LOL, this is gold

.

What...in the hell...is that?

On topic, it's ridiculous ND let this slip through the net. Really embarrassing to be honest, and I can sympathise with the dude who original painted it. Guessing it'll be changed in the final game?

There's so much art that goes into a game like this it isn't easy to cross-reference every texture.

They obviously trusted someone they shouldn't have. It isn't some intentional nod to another game.

Taking an inspiration from an art and creating something like that is totally fine. IMO its not even that big of a deal but I dont think its ok to just take anyone's artwork without their permission and put it in your game (which you intend to sell) without giving the artist any credit.

Naughty Dog is full of talented people, they could have easily made a digital painting of an island in a few hours. So yea, I just cant imagine this not being intentional. If this was a mistake, its a very stupid one.

The veil slips.

This will undoubtedly the year Naughty Gods go from highly respected developer to mere dogs, unworthy of decent game budgets or a spot in the cut-throat halls of Sony HQ.

2017 - Naughty Dog for sale. Count on it.

for all we know, it could have been the same contract concept artist who did work for ass creed who just resubmitted to naughty dog

Azaïzia Aymar is the content head for the assassins creed series

Translates to "It's a very nice compliment indeed :) And Martin Deschambault is a great artist who deserves to be credited!"

Martin Deschambault is the Senior Concept Artist from Ubisoft Montreal

No way, he's wrong and he knows it. If the entire AC series was like 2, he'd have a point. AC2 was just absolutely amazing.

But Id rather play UC1 which I dislike over AC 1/3. 3 especially. What a way to kill interest in your franchise.

What if I'm the real Ubermatik
My whole life has been a lie
Hehe. I just thought of a Goofy comic strip, where he paints a fence and then paints a sign that says "fresh paint". But since the sign was just painted as well, he added a smaller sign next to it, also saying "fresh paint" :) And that you could make small text next to the text that you added, saying that you added the text.

I realise the delicious irony of me posting in here with my tag and avatar, but that Battlestar Galactica actress has a different facial structure. Ellen Page and the copied subway map I get, along with this, but the muscular girl in UC4 does not look like that actress she's being compared to, and she was given Laura Bailey's eyes if she was given anyone's.
The facial structure is different.

Well I mean, you can't second guess everything in a game, at some point you have to put faith in the people responsible and trust them. It appears someone betrayed that trust, or screwed up badly.

That one didn't get much traction for obvious reasons. I mean, there's a slight resemblance in there, somewhere, but nothing to call for stolen image.

I think it's clear that they certainly used her as a reference (maybe even that exact image), but I think they did a good enough job adding other characteristics and facial features to their model to make it different.

Some people I imagine be like this now:

"Now we can shit on ND big time"

This is a non-issue and will probably be fixed when the final game launches (and nobody will remember about this in 2 months)
except the person who created this concept and some salty Ubi staffers

In the video game industry

This is exactly why gaming isn't like it used to be. Because it has now become a business. Not a hobby.

WTF are you talking about. It has always been a business. And using someone's elses art in your game is not exactly the definition of "fun".

This opens up a potentially big problem considering the only reason this was found out was because the trailer focused on it for a second. Depending on who actually put that asset in the game they may need to go through the whole game to look for more potentially copyrighted stuff

I knew it. I knew it all along. I knew that Haytham Kenway and Sir Francis Drake had something in between them. Someone needs to assassinate that smug face Nathan. Templar scum.

AC x Uncharted crossover when?
