Reposting from the other thread.

Jonathan Cooper is an ex-ubisoft animator. He joined Naughty Dog and said some stuff about his previous employer when the female assassins thingy came to light.

Now with this news, an Ubisoft Montreal dev (creative director) tweeted this to him

He waited two years... all for revenge.

You gotta admit this is funny though

Quick as fuck. So we can honestly move on now.

Based on some posts in this thread you'd think Its an ND policy to just go around stealing

I don't think anyone earnestly believes it's a "policy," but this sort of thing has happened enough times now that they may want to hire an editor or someone who can QA this sort of thing before it goes live.

it's probably just a coincidence.....like that other coincidence where people thought that ellie looked like ellen paige and then just by coincidence they changed her design

In our eagerness to get the story trailer out we made a regrettable mistake and didn’t thoroughly vet the art work used for an in game painting. We’ve already updated the trailer. We hold all artistry in high regard and take full responsibility for having allowed this to happen.

We want to sincerely apologize to everyone at Ubisoft, the Assassin’s Creed team, the original artist, and our fans.

Edit: beaten, leave me to small island with bottle of rum

Edit: Late.

At least they changed it before releasing the game, I don't want to think what would have happened.
Impressed by the quick reaction though.

Is the art based on a real world location? So could someone have googled it + art and stupidly grabbed the first thing that came up without checking?

I assume there will be a statement at some point from ND apologising and explaining. Probs placeholder art that an intern left and got overlooked.

So is this a huge deal, or something minor thats being blown out of proportion and can be fixed easly?

Genuine question, this thread is all over the place

not a huge deal. The only reason this seems bigger than it is, is because apologists and naughty dog fanboys will go over the top in their defense. I can't help but point it out and argue why it's wrong. The amount of people who were willing to say it was an "homage" or that "it's just one piece of art" is really pretty sad.

It's not really telling on how we view art, but instead its telling on how far people will go to defend something like they, even if they know it's wrong.

I didn't expect that they would update the trailer. Pretty neat

Shieeeeet.

Naughty Dog must have a department dedicated to replacing stolen assets.
"Code red, Code red! Come on guys, we trained for this. Mike, find me a picture of a beach, Tom, get ready to re-render that goddamn trailer!"

I imagine Evan Wells not being too happy about this. Whether it's a single artist's fault, it looks bad on the whole company.

I don't think this will affect the game negatively at all, but it's still unneeded and unnecessary controversy.

How do you control something like this though ? If one person is just given the task to make an artwork of an island and he decides to copy it from another game, how should I know that as a corporate head?

Good point, though it still seems like a silly mistake. Wonder what that guy is gonna face.

I honestly thought it had to be a homage because I couldn't believe a developer as exoerienced and established as Naughty Dog could overlook the inclusion of a picture that was actually published in the art book of another game and probably seen by thousands of people already.

I was wrong, it has nothing to do with fanboyism.

Hahaha.

But seriously that one probably was actually a coincidence, it's much harder to make completely unique faces.

But yeah, in this case someone probably copied some Ass Creed concept art as a placeholder for the scene and then forgot to remove it. Poor practise though to do that in the first place as it allows mistakes like this to happen!

Updated the OP

I'm actually really glad this happened before release. It would have been much worse if it was caught after the fact. Glad ND fixed the issue and apologized so quickly. Hopefully they're a lot more careful in the future.

Holy crap, you're right.

The other image worked better.

When I see this one transition into the next scene I think "Oh, current-gen can't handle that foliage".

Good on them for owing up. Mistakes are mistakes.

Proves that people saying that it was an easter egg were wrong though.

I think more the issue here is this isn't the first time this has happened with ND. In a vacuum I don't think it's a huge deal given how (relatively?) quickly they addressed it and apologized, but like Xander said they need someone over there checking this stuff way more thoroughly than they apparently are right now.

Gotta say, though it was good on naughty dog to switch it so quick, the original artwork made that transition work so much better.

Hopefully they can have one of their artists work up a piece that works just as well, given the extra time.
