Only 5 fast years until we're caught up. It'll still probably finish before ASOIF.

The 9/10 note is from people who have read everything perhaps ?
Sure you might not like this turn of events right now , but i'm quite certain that people who have read everything like it.( at least much more than you right now )

There wouldn't have been so much DRAMA about the translation when it was done if this was a mediocre story..
So either continue and see why people like it or drop it and wonder for the rest of your life.

Now to answer your complains :
Sylphy was someone that he was clearly interested from the start .. the fact that she contributed to heal "that" ..something that was the cause of many of his problems only improved the deal.
Rudeus is not someone who sleep with everyone... that's how the character is. "in his words , he will take responsability"
Your childhood friend not only cures you but is still devoted to you after all those years and you think that he would let this pass for what reason ? After failing to score Anything in this previous life , you'd think he would hesitate ? Wouldn't make sense at all.

Paul death left no impact ? Did you read the story. ? He lost his father, something that clearly affected him mentally and he lost an arm as a result . What's more his mother can't speak and appears to have regressed mentally.
What part of this sequence of events left NO IMPACT ?

And what's the problem with Roxy again ? Did you forget the part where Elianise obviously played a big role in all of this by putting everyone in that specific direction ?
Or is the part where roxy was trapped in a deadly maze for more than a month with no supllies and was rescued in the nick of time meaninngless ? Because it's most certainly isn't.

And since when paul death could be seen a miles away ? up to that point nobody of importance died.. at this point in the story the only characters that died where some dudes in the starting town and that's it ? what made this predictable again ? where was the forshadowing for those events ? like hell it was predictable.

Alright, let me expand on my thoughts.

Rudeus's whole ED dilemma, frankly wasn't convincing at all. It felt very forced. For someone who prides himself on being logical and being able to understand others (remember how he swiftly saved Lilia when he was a child?) there's absolutely no way he should have misunderstood Eris leaving the next day as him being unable to perform. Especially because he knows Eris very well, and Ghyslaine leaving with Eris should have raised flags.

Now, I was able to get past this issue but the next arc (Magic Academy) was just absolute trite. I was really, really expecting him to develop as a Magician here because the early volumes where he was learning to manipulate magic and create new melded magic was quite interesting. However, in an inexplicable twist of events, this entire arc is focused on his interactions with the side characters (which could have been fun, had these characters even an inch of personality) and curing his ED. What the fuck, man. So much wasted potential.

And then suddenly, Bam. Marriage. Wait, not much has happened in the story thus far. Things such as the hero experiencing hardship, etc. Yet now the protagonist is getting married? Why oh why...

Moving on, things do pick up a little. Gisu sends in an emergency request for Rudeus strength. Rudeus's wife is soon to have a child, but he makes a tough decision to go help his father Paul. Cool.

However, what should be exciting turns out not to be so. His travels through Begaritto are totally uneventful, much of the time he merely tells us what kind of monsters he encounters and how he easily 1-shots them. Really? Essentially, our protagonist here is overpowered as hell despite doing no substantial training since he was 6 years old. Where's the challenge?

Well, there is a sort of challenge eventually with the Labryinth boss room (So freaking cliche, might I add. He faces a hydra with Zenith, the damsel, stuck in a crystal behind it. Even JRPGs put more effort nowadays) The fight itself wasn't bad, but it's like... one meaningful battle after 13 bloody volumes.

Now, my earlier complaints were already in the back of my mind irritating me, so when something that should be tragic such as Paul dying happens, I couldn't really muster much of a reaction.

It's good that you mention Elinalise, because her spurring Rudi to marry Roxy was about the only interesting event that happened in all of these volumes, even though it's weird that this novel has literally turned into a harem.

I don't really care what happens next. Maybe it does get better, but after reading HALF the novel I'm completely baffled at how positive of a reception this drivel has gotten. It's so damned generic, and the world building as well as the characters are both average at best. Not to mention all of the sexual harassment/delusions that Rudi commits is weird as fuck and feels so out of place.

Probably because everyone that cared has already read the fan translations.

Well i disagree and this is why.

Eris :
Do you know how ED works ? it's certainly mental. After the very first try , he wakes up with a message telling him that "they are not meant to be together".. it's a goddamn misunderstanding but the core here of the thing is the context. His confidence was shatterred. what does Ghyslaine has to do with it. Eris looks at Ghyslaine from an early age even before rudeus was in the equation. This also happenned after eris learned of her parents death and AFTER she told rudeus that she was like familly. ..

Begaritto continent:
Well you speak that the hero hadn't encountered hardships, yet in this adventure when hardships did happen, you say that it was uneventfull ?
So let me recap this uneventfull arc.
-Get almost killed by a succubus (natural ennemy of the greyrats)
-Get almost shallowed by sandworms
-Had to fend off harpies for 3 days straights
After reaching the first town , and moving to the next get ambushed by bandits ( 2 deaths ) while 1 travellmate personally resented him.

And that's just the part getting to the labyrinth.. so uneventfull ...

No training since 6yold :
False.
He has not learned any new magic since that time, except magic cancel.. but he did travel the demon continent ( gisu himself tell it to paul, that place is hard to travel to ) .that travel even allowed eris to gain more skills than she should have.
And After that he continued to train his physical body with a daily training regime.
Sure his magic power is powerfull , he can cut someone like badigadi in 2 with 1 spell ..but he didn't skip training or stopped to train

Now i get your main complain now. You want your hero to suffer, you don't want him to one-shot ennemies and live an happly life unhindered. You want him to try harder to reap the results. That's somewhat understandable.

If i'm right about the above, you should totally then read untill the next "turning point"
If you hadn't realised by now the turning points are chapters that change the course of the story by many degres in a specific direction.

Eris

Dude. No way, man. It should have been obvious had he thought about it a little, like he usually does. The reason I mention Ghyslaine is because the butler guy tells Rudi that Eris and Ghyslaine left on a journey, and Ghyslaine wouldn't do something irresponsible like leaving Rudi without properly telling him first.

Begaritto

A bunch of generic fantasy monsters attack him and he blows them all apart. That's what the Begaritto arc came down to, and there was nothing particularly interesting about it. Disappointing when the novel tells you that it's supposed to be an extremely difficult environment filled with danger.

Labyrinth was just as much of a let down. Where did they face any danger at all? Conveniently, they had a book in their person that literally spoils all the dangers of the labyrinth, so they blew past everything 'cept the final boss.

I think the bigger tragedy is that not a single supporting character has any depth after 13 volumes. Also, Rudi doesn't have any rivals nor does he face any interesting antagonists because he's so much better than everyone else around his age. It probably does get better, but I had my fill of this series and I think I'd rather pick up something more my style.

Have I mentioned that Reincarnator is the shit? Four chapters were released since then...

Reincarnator 19

Let me get this straight:
Hansoo
goes off to solo the boss that could kill every last one of them but
Sangjin gets goaded into leading a group into this chamber in order to get the reward.
HMM... WHAT COULD GO WRONG? *flags start flying everywhere*

This world is incredibly fucked and this is more proof. If you haven't read reincarnator go check it out because it is more than worth it.

Been reading konosuba for the last 3 days ... it's really ,really fun

I've read 3 vols , the jokes are similar but damn doesn't it get old.. i love it .. it's like a joke by repetition ..works very well .

I was very surprised by the jack frost incident in volume 2 .. that was brutal as heck and very at odds with everything else that happenned in the show so far. Like the only moment when the show got grimdark...
That was especially weird considering how they treated the dulahan curse part ( it was solved in like 2mins )

The show depiction of death really goes in all directions....

What is going on with Accel world from Yen on? I thought it was supposed to come out every 4 months and yet it's completely missing from the July listing.

You can search http://www.hachettebookgroup.com to see the release dates for upcoming releases. Log horizon which is also a every 4 month release that coincided with Accel world has a listing for up to November already!!

This is really starting to piss me off since between this and the delays with No game no life their are multipul months this year where I've only got 1 book to order which makes it really hard to get free shipping in Canada.

Heck one month has no books at all which I didn't think was possible with the amount of series I've been getting from them but I guess that's what happens when the bulk of their series are every 4 months :/

I wish they would step up the pace with longer series though and do them every 3 months like they do with A Certian magical index. It's one thing for shorter stuff under 10 volumes to be every 4 months, or delayed when it's seriously close to catching up to the Japanese release but when it's got 19 volumes with more coming like Accel world does slowing down is not the anwser

Pretty happy to hear a Spice and Wolf sequel got announced for the anniversary. Of course I'm only onto book 6 so it might take me a while to get to it.

Just hope that they arenot slowing because the sales aren't there.

This always annoy me when this happen.

Excellent news. been a while since i'm read those.. might as well read everything from scratch again.

I thought it Anime for first. *sigh*

Interesting how they handle the sequel sine the ending is pretty much a closure.

Sorry for not contributing much. Not exactly type of person who comment every stuff that I read >_>. Currently finishing Date A Live.

For some reason I decided to give a chance to Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta? and while I'm still around 1/4 of the first volume, I'm really enjoying it.
I don't know if I'll keep reading it after the first volume - depends on the story.

I bounced off very hard from most popular titles like SAO, Accel World, Hataraku Maou-sama, Haganai and a few more and the last title I enjoyed was Haruhi, which I read years ago, so I'm glad I finally found something I like.

Only other one where I was able to get through the first volume was Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers, but despite the interesting premise, the pacing and the amount of repetition during the protagonist's internal monologues made me drop it early in volume 2.

I just marathoned the spice and wolf anime in three nights and I was thinking about getting into the source material. I actually found the ending to be quite satisfying but would you guys recommend reading the light novels?

I've looked on wikipedia and it seems it takes a few years for the english translation. Will that be the same for this announced sequel?

The last novel is coming out in April in english.

I think it really depends on how Spice and Wolf sold for YenPress to decide whether to release the sequel.
Sad but true, but when a new season of the anime would come out, it would sell well without a doubt. Thats why most of the LNs the publishers release lately are the ones that got a newer anime adaption.

It could come out in a few months after it releases in JPN.

Where can I read konosuba? I don't want to read any until the show is done, but I know I'll be thirsty for more aqua.

I wish they would sell it here.

Going by the pace of the anime , you'll have 1 or 2 vol worth of material to enjoy once it's done..
I'm quite sure it isn't liensed yet , so it's available on "those usual places"

Anyone read To aru Hikuushi he series?

Finishing both anime and currently marathon seiyaku.

Pretty neat how the author decide to split the story into 4 different view point

just noticed that amazon has some upcoming light novels on sale

No game no life 5 $8.97
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 5 $9.06
Sword Art Online 7: Mother's Rosary $8.97
Spice and Wolf, Vol. 17 $8.33
The Devil Is a Part-Timer, Vol. 4 $9.39 (5 cents more than I have it preordered on rightstuf)
Accel World, Vol. 6: Shrine Maiden of the Sacred $8.72 (3 cents more than I have it preordered on righstuf)

in case people want them at slightly cheaper than the usual rightstuf sale (or around the same price on the last 2)

I am reading Legend of the Galactic Heroes Vol. 1 at the moment, it's pretty good and has been living up to the hype so far. Much more serious fare and well written too. Translation is quite good as well, flows nicely.

Started reading Tales of Demons and Gods this weekend, a chinese LN and its quite good. Another rebirth story where the MC is trying to prevent a tragedy from happening. Reading these direct translations of chinese idioms is pretty entertaining. Found it based off of a Web Comic/Manga of the same name that covers like the first ~30 chapters.

Well apparently the Index novels got eBook versions available on Kindle about a week ago, pretty awesome since I wanted to check them out but I'm pretty much all out of shelf space lol. Hopefully a few more series get released soon too, I really want to start on the Spice and Wolf series but not a single one seems to be digitally available, same for the SAO progressive series.

Really? I find the sentence-structure strange/clumsy (and their length to short), not flowing well.

I actually looked this thread up to ask, as surely some people here have read the original,
if that is an effect of directly translating japanese text-structure, or if it's because of the original writers writingstyle,
because in comparision, afair, Guin Saga was much nicer languagewise with a good flow (at least the english translation).

Who for Viz translated Legend of the Galactic Heroes, unfortunately I dont get my copy until next week. I usually pin it on the original writer if the translator has extensive experience.

Yen press listings for up to November are out. Index 9, Log Horizon 6 and Re: Zero 2

Intrestingly enough they also went back and added something to September that wasn't listed previously with Overlord 2.

That said while the new november stuff is up for preorder on Amazon the October release of Sword Oratoria 1 still isn't up yet. And still no sign of Accel world 7 which is pretty annoying now that we've got pretty much the rest of the year mapped out.

Anime helps, but it doesn't seem to be necessary anymore. English publishers have been licensing a lot of stuff that has anime that completely flopped, very old adaptations or no anime at all.

Spice and Wolf probably sold a lot more as novels than anime in the West.

Sorry for the late answer: Daniel Huddleston is the translator.
Going by that one redditpost it IS a direct translation instead of a ?translocation?...
but that online translationproject - while similar (afai read)- differs a bit, like f.i. actually using Kaiser instead of Emperor.

On a sidenote: Its really weird to read Wittenfeld instead of Bittenfeld, at first I was confused who that was,
and Reuenthal feels like a reoccuring typo. (Probably a general problem when an offical translation comes way after one getting used to a certain translation).

I would bet on more being added to the Yen Press fall slate. Durarara is not scheduled in yet for November, and Sword Oratoria, Oregairu and others are still not scheduled.

Re: Galactic Heroes I liked the translation and loved the book itself, reviewed it highly

I don't know about the other two but Sword Oratoria is set for Oct 25. It's just not listed on Amazon yet

http://www.hachettebookgroup.com/search/?q=sword+oratoria

I know it only says format Electronic book but it's also saying that for Index 9 which is getting a physical release for sure.

Edit

Looks like Oregairu 2 is also Oct 25

Sure, so the point is more that the listings aren't complete yet, so more stuff might be added. They literally just put up Oregairu 2 today, so I'd bet more is coming soon

What I don't get is how Amazon has some listed and not others. They have Oregairu 2 already available to order and yet nada on Sword Oratoria.

Probably waiting for the physical copy? They probably have some scanner in the publisher databases which automatically adds standard physical releases, and perhaps they create the original listing based on that and add the digital copy afterward when they confirm it'll be on kindle.

Speculation though

Have you read I Shall Seal the Heavens?

If not, you should definitely check it out. It starts out a bit slow, but it by far the beset Chinese Xianxia web novels that I have read (and a lot better than Tales of Demons and Gods as well).

Updated Yen On listings:

Accel World 7 Sept 20th
SAO Progressive 4 Oct 25th

Finally they update on when the next volume of Accel world is coming. Wonder what's up with the two month delay. With Volume 6 coming in March usually the next volume would have been July.

I hope this delay is a one time thing and it gets back on track. Consdering that it's 19 volumes in Japan with more coming getting only 2 a year instead of 3 would make catching up take even longer then usual :/

edit: Where did those listings come from? I'm not seeing them when searching those series on http://www.hachettebookgroup.com/

Probably balancing the schedule out, or could be something with the translator, editorial delays (especially considering the number they are publishing) etc any one of those things could have happened.

Came from press listings

Chivalry of a Failed Knight volume 5 - Decidedly lacking in the Ikki/Stella departments. Just in the epilogue for the most part. Some other parts were interesting though. A large chunk of the book was about Ikkis first battle in the competition. Next book will feature Stella's first battle.

I'm almost done with Kokoro Connect - Yume Random. At times I feel like the series is little more than a self-help book because of how each of heartseed's plots basically forces Taiichi and co to realize some issue they have and then they reach out to each other to work things out, but I still like it quite a bit.

For a while I though Taiichi and Yui were actually going to end up together (even if it was only temporarily), but shit hit the fan pretty badly during the trip to Hokaido. I felt pretty bad for Taiichi as he roped himself into doing crap he didn't want to do only because of his sense of righteousness and wanting to help others at all costs, even if it mean alienating Inaba and the rest of the culture research club. Him almost committing suicide because a girl who had ended up making a wrong decision due to his advice dreamed that Taiichi shouldn't be there anymore... that was was a bit too much for me, even though I probably missed part of what was going on through his mind due to my limited kanji vocabulary.

I just got to the part where Yui and Aoki finally get back together, and it's somewhat corny but still really sweet... too bad it seems we're unikely to ever get an animated adaptation of later arcs, because seeing them in motion would be really nice IMO.

My favorite thing about it is that it's a pure character drama with no random slapstick comedy (it does have comedy in it, but doesn't overuse slapstick to defuse drama/romance like other things I've seen), and doesn't use fanservice-y moments for titillation (I was honestly disgusted by the part in Nise Random where Chihiro used a special ability to pose as Taiichi and got Inaba to strip to her underwear for him and even took pictures).

I think that an entire volume without that dynamic was a nice change of pace actually. It does set thing for the goddamn "WHAT" moment at the end with stella.
And the book was spend expanding many of the characters that lacked a proper introduction or some that will be revelant later... all in one there wasn't a single low moment , IMO even if the focus was food because that food is indeed full of energy

I don't like
That self nerf the MC got they spend way too much time about it , to the point i was expecting more. i liked this turn of events, if only because the fight itself was cool but thinking about it , if it was that serious , the writter should have gotten us some hints way before he did.

Overall , i liked it ..the MC sister is REALLY a lost cause, to the point she has trully become a parody of herself ... I guess i prefer her when she tries to bully stella ? ( never thought i would write this )

Despite those moments it was a fun book, i liked it
