It's something to see. It becomes more and more obvious as you watch them that they have very few consistent ideas. They're like politicians, if they can turn something into an angle for an attack they'll use it no matter how much it contradicts their past actions.

You're absolutely right. There are huge problems in the industry and medium that allowed this group to congregate.
I'm really not sure there is a way for the industry to fix it in the near term, though. Even as we see a shift to being more inclusive and diverse, these people aren't going to go away. The only solution that seems like it might do something anytime in the near future is figuring out a new way to deal with anonymous harassment.
They want to punish a woman for having opinions by whichever means necessary, it's that simple. They don't care if their accusations are nonsensical or hypocritical, mosly because they're emotionally stunted halfwits with no shame but also because their methods of attack are effective, regardless of the facts.

Hmm. I don't think it's a malpractice to describe it as a male oriented movement, and/or dominantly male movement. Specifically because gamergate seems to specifically "benefit" the archetypal while male (as in, it befits the putative white male bigot), and those who are not white males yet still participate in it do not benefit from it as the white male does. Kind of like how during slavery black people could be the traded good as well as have other positions of relative power that would give them relative benefits yet they were still participating in a hierarchy of power that was designed primarily to benefit white people. In some weird way the same thing is happening here, GG is not only putting these disenfranchised minorities through hell, it also schemes to make them unwitting aggressors as well.
Question is what will a first time observer position himself or herself as when confronted with these things? It's not just that this is a thing that is relatively sparse and inconsequential over longer periods of time, but that the standard observer should optimally be equipped to perceive GG as the puerile thing it is straight from the get go.

On page 1 I gave some background on it. Kevin Smith and Jamie Walton started a charity together. They talk about it on one of the Fatman on Batman podcasts. I believe they run a home for women to escape from abuse. It sounds like a small organization with hopes to grow (although with a shoot first and think later leader that might not happen).

The problem is, there's actually stuff (including Tweets) out there that looks bad for Rapp, and I'd imagine that's what Walton is going off of.
They most likely decided that she was the problem before they found the thesis and went looking for dirt to get her fired. It doesn't matter that the dirt they found discredits the idea that she's the problem, it doesn't matter that a lot of them probably agree with it. It's a weapon to use against her and that's all it is to them, a gotcha move to achieve their ends no matter the means.

Those Gamergaters are on a crusade because Nintendo removed a couple of skimpy outfits/a facetouching-minigame in some recent games and now they are accusing one of the localizers of being a pedophile? Potentially ruining her life over this?!
