Forgive me for thinking that someone educated enough to have to write a thesis, presumably gets a degree as a direct result because of it, lists it in their linkedin profile, and gets hired in spite of it may have written something more substantive and nuanced than what is being implied.

I read the highlights. I'm not interested in reading the thesis. If you really think it is what they say it is I question your judgement. Not the person who wrote and submitted the thing.

I also don't believe you if you imply that you read it.

Why talk about her thesis as if it's information that wasn't already public and that Nintendo didn't know about it?

The real question is: Why are these people all of a sudden coming out of the woodwork to use this "clearly damning thesis" to get a person fired for their job as a PR person for Nintendo? Especially when those people are "advocates for integrity in gaming journalism", something this clearly has nothing to do with?

Don't get distracted. This is an attack at someone for something totally unrelated to whatever their thesis was about. It's blatantly obvious. This is the kind of tactic these types of people use to get people to join their "cause" and advocate for what amounts to essentially ruining people's lives because something changed in a video game they liked. Don't fall for that.

OBVIOUSLY the hate group has completely genuine intentions and the victim here is the real issue and should lose her job for arguments that she didn't actually make. We shouldn't actually expect people to read the thesis before making the same exact accusations that just to reiterate, are from a hate group specifically harassing a person most likely because she's a woman working at a game company, that's asking for too much.

Her main point is he US and others have focused way too much on Sexualized Anime as if it is the root of the problem. She argues they should in fact be targeting child trafficking, economic and social conditions that lets the creation of real child abuse exist etc.

Unfortunately she made the mistake of not differentiating between anime porn and real porn frequent enough so people can't cherry pick sections. Her stance is anime porn typically harms no one and should not be held to the same standard as real porn and that Governments need to crack down on the real stuff not do false moves that solve nothing

And, to be fair to my viewpoint, you don't know it as I haven't offered it. I'm just pointing out that her paper, given the academic setting, is completely in line with modern science.

I mean the argument she presents is pretty weak and kind of subjective. But that's what happens when you're researching an underdeveloped topic.

I tend to take the western standard of better safe than sorry when dealing with sexual activity as it pertains to underdeveloped minds. But I can't in good faith argue that what I read of that article isn't a sound enough academic argument against strict possession laws for what it is.

That's a common problem with academic discourse, but I'd say the onus is on the public to shape up and get on the academic's level.

1. She wouldn't have mentioned it in her profile
2. And far more important: It wouldn't have been published for fucks sakes.

Censoring academic discourse because it tackles topics that make people uncomfortable is a sad dystopia.

Heck I've written a paper about marital rape and the reform of §177 StGB in German criminal law and of course I have listed the (nonsensical) points people made to keep marital rape legal. I'm sure this could somehow be used out of context too.
 
Oh, fuck that. Alison is too awesome for this nonsense. Gamergate's criteria for choosing their victims is a bit backwards, to say the least.

She tweeted about lowering the age of consent, allowing children to have more agency when it comes to sex, etc. It's controversial.

Also, in the paper she does a lot of blustering and arm waving about the distribution and possession of Child Pornography being no different than any other form of speech or expression, which is completely at odds with how our criminal justice system views the subject. Children cannot consent to be in pornography. The possession and distribution of materials containing children in sexual situations is a crime and rightfully so. Her opinion that child porn networks have only a vague correlation with children being groomed for sexual abuse is dubious as well.

I wrote a paper back in law school advocating legalising incest between consenting adults. But not being a woman, GG doesn't give a shit about that.

I don't know how to say this without coming off as a complete asshole, but I'll try my best. I absolutely condone the type of work Jamie Walton is doing. But sometimes in the pursuit of justice, people get too caught up in their own views and opinions, and make everyone who even slightly disagrees out to be a monster. Combine that with a relentless desire to out any perceived villain and bring them to "justice", and you get Jamie Walton's current Twitter feed.

Just throwing out, on the Twitter account of a person who runs an anti-sex trafficking organization, the accusation that someone advocates CP because some GG nerds told you so, and then when people respond to point out that you may have been duped, deflecting blame by saying the accused has the opportunity to prove her "innocence" seems really irresponsible. Run on sentence alert. She just drops that accusation and tries to absolve herself from any responsibility if she's actually wrong. But she'd probably never actually admit she's wrong because if she read the thesis and disagreed with Alison on various points, then Alison is still "advocating CP" to her.

I like that Alison pointed out on her Twitter that GG frequently uses at-risk groups to attack people they disagree with. It's kind of like how the FBI and NSA try to paint anyone who is against more surveillance measures as CP distributing drug dealers. It's such an obvious ploy, and Walton seems either oblivious, or is too self-absorbed to take a moment and evaluate what's really happening.

Have a sense of proportion here. Slagging off your employer on a third-party broadcast by waving around insider credentials that are way above your pay grade is unambiguously a more serious breach of your terms of employment than writing a critique of international law in a touchy subject area that some people apparently think is off-limits to even talk about, and writing it before you were even hired to begin with. (I should hope we don't have to run over the rudimentary distinction between the questions of "whether X is bad" and "whether current legal measures are the most efficacious way to mitigate the harms of X", but considering how difficult it is for people to recognize that distinction when it comes to war policy or drug policy or gun policy, I don't expect we'll be there anytime soon with CP.)

Alison Rapp has been a target for forum trolls before GG was ever a thing (as she knows well herself, as she keeps receipts). This comes with the territory of being loud on Twitter and having much greater public visibility than most employees in her position. NoA has never had a problem with her being loud on Twitter because she knows how to keep her mouth shut when it comes to things that are actually confidential, and I doubt they will start now. A rubbish bin for complaints to the company about Alison Rapp already exists and has long existed.

Keep in mind, too, that she's an asset to Nintendo as an important line to a demographic within their very big tent. When people raised a stink about the lack of same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life, you can bet she was at the table when the marketing department was figuring out what to do for damage control.
 
This is absolutely horrid and I hope she doesn't get fired for this even though she didn't do anything except have an education.

Corporations need to start standing up for the employees and against these lynch mobs.

It's amazing that literally every thread dealing with any topic related to GG is just inundated with people saying "I don't know what's going on, but the victim seems at fault here, by the way (gamergate talking point)"

It's like the goddamn clone wars. Where do these people come from?
