Ghostbusters (2016) Trailer #1 (Feig, Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, Jones)

Everything's relative, of course, Ghostbusters' practical effects are still tops in my book as well. But I think the ghosts really pop in the new film. The spectral trails are nicely done.

I think Ivan Reitman was actually unhappy that some of the special effect shots in the original Ghostbusters were incomplete. But the movie always looked quite good to me. The sequel actually had some pretty impressive optical effects for 1989.

You can't really compare the two, as Ghostbusters was a completely new IP, so they could do fakeouts like having the trailer start like a horror movie, before essentially turning into an action movie. The cat's out of the bag now, and it seems they're going more heavily comedy-based for the reboot.

One thing I think the OG trailer does well is make Murray look like a star. This new one doesnt really give shine to anyone besides Jones, although I really think McKinnon's look is killer and if she gets enough lines she might steal the movie.

I'm in, but more for my love of SNL than any Ghostbusters nostalgia (Extreme Ghostbusters was the first thing I ever saw featuring the name).

I once studied the courtroom scene from Ghostbusters II shot by shot for some effects work I did on this fan film.

They did some amazing stuff in that movie.

Striped pants made me think for the briefest of moments we were finally getting that Ghostbusters/Beetlejuice crossover.

That looks seriously horrible. Not a funny joke in the whole thing and has this strange cheap look to it.

So not to be to toooo nerdy, but in the game (written by Ramis and Aykroyd) Winston mentions completing his phd... But yes, he was yet to be a scientist (or doctor)in the first one.

And its snappier to write "4 scientists" instead of "3 scientists and an everyman"

Wow this alone makes me want to buy/play that game.

"You white people may be educated and smart and stuff but just like the originals made decades ago ima be the token black person."

Yeah, that part made me cringe. It actually looks like it could be fun besides that very strange flaw.

God, that was terrible. Humor feels extremely forced and the jokes aren't even good.

Please don't let Back to the Future get the same treatment...

♪ If there's something weird and it don't look good. Who you gonna call? Bill Murray! ♫

This trailer is a piece of crap, makes the new Star Trek trailer look great

I'm gonna reserve judgement on the actual film of course, but that's a pretty bad trailer.

The trailer is kind of misleading, but there are more signs of it being a reboot than not.

For example, when they unveil the Ecto-1, they seem to be surprised it's a hearse, but if they were familiar with the old Ghostbusters it wouldn't be that surprising (I know the old one was an ambulance, but close enough). Also they probably wouldn't call it Ecto-1 out of respect for the original Ecto-1.

Basically everything they're doing seems like it's happening for the first time and no one is making allusions to the old Ghostbusters other than the text at the beginning.

The trailer says outright that New York was saved by 4 scientists 30 years ago...

...this is gross if accurate.

Ah. Turns out it's not quite accurate.

The plot breakdown McWeeny posted was quickly scrubbed from HitFix, so it's pretty impossible to google search (I dont' think it comes up even in archive) but I remembered grabbing relevant parts and quoting them in an argument (one of the fifty fuckin million) about this movie.

Here's what he actually said:

If I was guessing, I'd bet Wiig is Erin, Jones is Abby, and McKinnon is Jillian. That's because I'm almost positive Patty, an MTA subway ticket employee who stumbles across the main ghost in the film, is going to be McCarthy. Seems like a perfect fit for her, and I can see how all four of them will fit together as a team.

Looks like it was just McWeeny guessing, and he mixed up McCarthy and Jones.

It's not a continuation. That's part of why this trailer isn't very good, besides broken-finger piano-plunker guy and bad-joke-picker-dude. The intro confuses what it actually is.

It wasn't a new IP. The cartoon had been around and it was the same mixture of humor and creepiness. I'll never forget the episode (or maybe episodes) where this guy lost his wife or gf and basically became a demon with a flute that he played to destroy the world.

The trailer looks pretty, but the humor in it feels lacking.

I want to like it, but they aint giving me much to work with here...

I thought that was a really good trailer. Better than I expected actually. Some of the jokes did fall flat but overall it was good.

Kate McKinnon looks like the stand out character to me. Most of her scenes were the most enjoyable. McCarthy and Wiig did ok but nothing too special and Leslie Jones, unfortunately, seems to be the token black character. Hopefully she doesn't come acorss like that in the entire film but this trailer didn't do much in that regard.

I'm looking forward to it.

The Real Ghostbusters didn't come until after Ghostbusters had been released. The Filmation "Ghost Busters" had no relation to the movie or the movie's creation.

Ramis/Aykroyd's "Ghostbusters" was a completely original idea.

Eeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

The least I can say is that it doesn't seem to be packed with crude raunchy humor given the production staff's previous credentials. At the same time, most of the jokes fall flat, and the CG is pretty conspicuous too. I mean, yeah, they are ghosts, so they are supposed to not look completely realistic, but it still kinda sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

It's also worth noting that the marketing materials for the film have now started....four months away from the films release. Which is usually never a good sign in regards to the studio's faith in the film (the same thing happened to 2015's Fant4stic. First official trailer appeared in April...four months before the film's release).

I think Sony has another Pixels on their hands, to be honest. Really not feeling this one.

...? The cartoon came after the movie. You know that right? And it had absolutely nothing to do with the Filmation cartoon.
