Ghostbusters (2016) Trailer #1 (Feig, Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, Jones)

It was still offensive how the actor and character was treated in the original but the one thing I will say is, at least they didn't go as far as this one has.
Again - Have you already seen the movie? I really dont get it, even while it is higly possible that they do it again, how can you speak like you already seen this movie? This happens all the time in this thread, people act like they have allready then the full fucking movie.

Great reddit post summarizing why most people, myself included, aren't especially pumped for this one. Touches on all the major points. Worth a read.

The film is pure tokenism
Everything about it screams box-ticking rather than justifiable or artistic choices.
Even the fact that it is all women rather than a combination of men and women is really obvious pandering to (and trying to cash in on) a ‘female empowerment’ sentiment. It is a decision that has no other point behind it than to be an attention-grabbing gimmick.
Beyond that, every other clichéd trope (many of which are quite offensive) has been rolled out:
Fat Clumsy character that bumbles from one mistake to another, causing and fixing problems in equal measure by accident? Check
Loud black character that ‘comes from the streets’, isn’t well educated and makes very loud overblown exclamations (in an offensively Ebonic vernacular) to punctuate the situations the characters are in? check
The very smart, but quiet character who is known for their intellect but will ‘find their inner strength’ to explode with emotion and rage? check
I could go on and on… you get the idea. The old film didn’t need that because the writing and performances were actually tailored and even a little nuanced. They didn’t have to rely on this sort of clown-car sht

Yeah what a great analysis and not at all exactly the same bullshit since day one.

Where in that trailer was McCarthy clumsy due to being fat. Oh wait nowhere.

Calling it being all women a gimmick is such a deep analysis too.

Also lol at calling Feig and the movie the real sexist because Dana Barret and Gozer.

Have you reached the part yet where the author explains why the movie is sexist?

Are you serious? A post where someone "explains" why it is sexist to have made the movie?

From the post: "
So there is no need to remake it with a female cast at all. Doing it is actually just an artificial exercise in misandry – or more likely just an attempt to cash in on that sentiment."

Into the trash it goes.

I am waiting for a 200 page thesis to pop-up over one fucking trailer.

I get why some people don't like it but there are those who are going a little overboard on this. I have seen trailers that didn't do it for me and the final product has been just great.

I think this looks great from the trailer. It won't replace the classic but it looks like fun.

Have you reached the part yet where the author explains why the movie is sexist?

Just added that to my post.

Love it. Such deep analysis and not at all the exact same bullshit I've heard since day one.

Though calling Feig and the movie the real sexists is a new twist

Lol holy shit

By contrast, many of the male characters were incredibly flawed; weak (Louis Tully), stupid and arrogant (Walter Peck), short-sighted and rash (the Mayor), lazy (Venkman), no social skills (Egon) etc etc.
In fact in the original films Women are generally the only characters that are routinely shown as well rounded and strong.
So there is no need to remake it with a female cast at all. Doing it is actually just an artificial exercise in misandry – or more likely just an attempt to cash in on that sentiment.
The point is, the original Ghostbusters team wasn’t artificially and deliberately constructed to be 4 men. It was just that the writers also starred in it and were all good friends who worked together well.
This new cast has been very deliberately and artificially put together to be all women. Not because they wrote their own roles, or because they were all friends making a film together. It’s just a trite gimmick to exclude men, and it is clearly just for press attention. In that sense it is actually taking advantage of women in a way the original film could never be accused of.
What REALLY annoys me about this film is that Sony have overblown the 'misogyny' angle and exploited it. Any hate this film gets is just deflected as 'Oh its just sexist ramblings. If you hate this film you are sexist' ...and the sad thing is a small but very vocal minority of misguided SJWs have jumped on that.

Ghostbusters is misandry and SJW pandering.

That great post is textbook MRA speak.

Hmmm, I don't really like what they've shown!

These are the scenes you show for your comedy film and the only chuckle I got was the incredulous one I gave at how not funny that trailer was.

I thought it was good up to the "goo can possess people" bit. Then it turned meh. Hopeful for the film.

I loved the way Mccarthy body language and facial expression changed.

I thought it was cool.

God just fully reading that reddit post.

It's one part it shouldn't exist no matter what. One part these women suck and two parts feminists stole my ice cream.

Holy shit was that even more terrible than I thought it was going to be. Did they forget that the first movie was a comedy?
People need to stop fucking saying this because it is REALLY tired by now and it's only been a day. This movie is also very fucking blatantly a comedy. The humor may not appeal to you, and that is fine, but there are jokes in the trailer, and the movie is a comedy. Maybe you haven't noticed yet but it's 2016, and movies, writing, acting, comedy, etc have changed a lot in the past 32 years. It's why movies like Naked Gun can't and don't exist anymore. Ghostbusters 2016 is a comedy movie made in 2016 so the humor is going to be modern. Christ.

McCarthys head does a full 180 while being possessed.....
And this movie is not suppose to be a parody?

Rick Moranis has a colander put on his human head and on a computer screen we see a scan of a giant devil dog that is living inside of him. Sigourney Weaver also gets possessed by a devil dog and floats up off her bed and spins in mid air. The Ghostbusters use ectoplasm that they have had sex with coupled with a pop song to make the Statue of fucking Liberty walk down New York. Get out of here with this stupid shit.

That's what annoys me as well, could one of the white members of the cast not have been working as a non scientist? The way the trailer presents it is stereotypical and trying to present her as a "dumb" individual with "Street smarts".
Melissa McCarthy plays an author, not a scientist.

Holy fuck "it's just a movie". It's exposure. It's reprsentation. We just raised a shit fit over "just movies" for good fuckking reason. 3 movies and all my niece, nephew, and little cousins see is that the black one can't be as smart as the white ones. Fuck that.
So did you actually read her tweets or not because they were actually from a person literally saying "that you for representing me in this movie". Also it looks like the three white women are socially inept nerds and it's up to Patty to help their clueless asses out. She's an MTA worker with a car, so she has knowledge of the city and a vehicle which are clearly things the inept white women did not have until she joins them.

Maybe this is the time where your niece/nephew/cousins learn patience and not to judge on first appearance, so that when they see her being a hero in the actual movie they will have someone to look up to, who proves that, just like Winston did, you don't have to be a fancy scientist to contribute to a group or save the world. In the trailer alone we see a white women get possessed by a ghost, pick up another white woman and throw her out the window, but the "stupid MTA worker" is the one that actually saves BOTH of them.

That said his role was completely cut to basically next to nothing. He shows up way late in the movie and even after he shows up he disappears for a chunk.

He's not on the posters either.

I gather Jones will have a larger role for what it's worth.

Oh ok, I didn't notice such things when I was 6 watching the OG over and over and over haha. Winston was a good guy and that is all I cared about back then.

Yeah, my take from the trailer is that the three nerds are kind of fucking around and getting nowhere with their idea until Patty shows up. I'm pretty sure she's the one who gets the main plot of the movie started.

Ernie Hudson gets no love.

Unfortunately it went by name recognition, with Bill Murray being the biggest star in that list at the time and getting first billing. Dan Aykroyd was pretty big back then, but not leading role big, most of his movies he had to share the screen with a co-star of equal or bigger star power (Blues Brothers, Trading Places). So a second billing for him. Sigourney Weaver being a leading actress and a big name at the time gets a third billing. Harold Ramis was always a bit player back then (even though he was a well known director/ screenwriter) and would get the next billing down. And comedy relief takes up the back with Rick Moranis. It really was a case of Ernie Hudson just not being a well established actor with a recognizable resume behind him. Sadly they couldn't even give him an "and introducing Ernie Hudson as:" credit, because this wasn't his first movie. But they could've at least put him at the last billing behind Moranis.

Shame that he got shafted though. But the studio probably looked at him as some lesser character that got shuffled into the second half of the movie. More of less a Walter Peck level role.

Alright. I'm about to go on break at work just to light your ass on fire for the idiotic nature of this fucking response.

Yeah neither did I till I rewatched it years later and went damn they screwed Hudson over.

It's a testament to Hudson's acting ability and personality that he made Winston memorable because the movie set out to do the exact opposite.

I know it's not the Ghostbusters movie we all wanted but at least it's another Ghostbusters movie and er....

Fuck it. I've got nothing...

Okay, I'll bite. How is it a bad post? No one has said anything about that. Just these kinds of terse responses.

I'd like to know more about the thoughts of people who are so in love with this reboot. Pleeeeease don't tell me it's the sexist portion of the argument.

The Robocop remake was so much worse than bad. If it were just plain old 'bad', then at least it might have had some entertainment value.

I watched RoboCop 3 before watching the RoboCop remake for the express purpose of reminding myself what an actually bad movie is. RebootCop is a decent movie that just gets bogged down by a bad third act and, quite frankly, being named RoboCop brings it down as well. Basically RebootCop is good until Murphy actually returns to Detroit. RebootCap is brought down by sharing the same name as an exponentially better movie (and RoboCop 2 is also better).

I hated the ectoplasm messing with people's emotions/anger in Ghostbusters 2.

That's kind of par for the course with ghost stuff though. Aykroyd is a huge occult nerd and one of the "theories" or what "makes" a ghost is that the person died in an incredibly traumatic way - so much so that it left an imprint of them on space/time. So ectoplasm responding to emotions was a pretty standard direction to go with that.

Yeah, my take from the trailer is that the three nerds are kind of fucking around and getting nowhere with their idea until Patty shows up. I'm pretty sure she's the one who gets the main plot of the movie started.

That's actually exactly what happens, going by the leaks from back when Sony got hacked. Patty is the first person in the group to see the actual main bad guy (I'm assuming that's the part in the trailer where she's alone in the subway and seeing a ghost) and she's the driving force into getting the group together and actually doing shit. I mean it could have changed since those leaks but from what there is in the trailer it looks like it's basically still the same.

Can you define "modern" humor for me vs. non-modern humor?

I loved the Robocop Remake. Havent seen the first until months later and I think the original one is the superior movie, but the Remake is a really fun flick.

Why do I need to see the entire movie? That small segment of the trailer makes it abundantly clear what role she plays in the movie.
Because, when you cut a trailer good, you can lead people in the wrong direction. Most likely she is like we have already seen, but maybe there is more in her?
I just mean, just a couple of months ago everyone was 100% sure we now have a black, male jedi as the force using lead in the new Star Wars trilogy. Turnes out, he was not. But it was suggested in the trailers.

I just mean, maybe its better to wait until we can rely on more then 2:30 minutes footage out of 100.

Sexist portion?

75% of it is sexist. That last 25% is OG GB was a classic so this shouldn't exist and the actors suck.

Alright. I'm about to go on break at work just to light your ass on fire for the idiotic nature of this fucking response.
I'm excited! Even if I'm being argumentative, I'm always open to being shown that I'm wrong or looking at something incorrectly so lay it out for me. Being completely serious not trying to come off as sarcastic or condescending, I wanna know what your opinion is against that and if I'm wrong or out of line by all means, please correct me.

"Modern" comedy does not have to actually be funny, got it.
Yes that's what I said. Exactly. Humor is subjective and I'm level headed enough to know and understand that but yes, because the comedy on display in this trailer doesn't appeal to you/some people that means that 1) all comedy is that way and 2) this is not an actual comedy movie, there are no jokes in it at all.

Can you define "modern" humor for me vs. non-modern humor?

I didn't mean to come off as some sort of expert but there is, at least to me, a very obvious difference in tone and comedy when you watch older movies compared with those from today. Ghostbusters, for example, is kind of a slow, mellow, low key movie. The humor in it is dry, subtle, sarcastic. Look at Naked Gun, or Airplane! for other examples where humor is mostly wordplay or sight gags. Those kind of movies don't exist anymore. That's not really an opinion, they straight up don't make 'em like they used to. I've read articles and posts on GAF where people try to explain it as, now-a-days people are more into bright, flashy, loud stuff, their attention spans are much shorter than they used to be, there are so many distcrations that things have to move at a very fast pace to keep people's attention. So a slower low-key comedy like Ghostbusters might not be as well received in this day and age because the humor isn't really what people are used to now. Loud shit (Patty yelling and slapping her teammate) and over-the-top slapstick (getting ectoplasm barfed on you by a ghost) is more ... I don't know if "in" is right but they're kind of the standard now? I'm not saying it's a good thing!!! Not at all. Just pointing out that there is a very big difference in the kind of humor that used to be in comedy movies VS the kind that's in them now.

It's a critique of a movie based off a trailer.

Alright. On break.

Do you have any fucking clue. Any at all how many fucking years we've been putting up with this fucking Magical Negro bullshit?

"This black wo/man may not have none of that fancy book learning but he sure do got enough home grown common sense/street smarts/muscle to help the intelligent white people out of any jam that can't be fixed with brains."

The answer is all of them. All of the fucking years from the very moment a black person was allowed to be anything in a movie beyond a fucking buffoon.

Don't talk to me about fucking patience from your seat of condescending ignorance. I don't fuck that "even though she's not as smart as them, she sure is a fucking hero in her own way." I've seen it, thank you. In a fucking film that's supposed to be breaking barriers why the fuck do we get saddled with this bullshit AGAIN?!

Wh5 the fuck do WE have to be patient. We've been patient. In this case we've been 30 fucking years of patient and it's the same god damn thing all over again and worse.

Gets some historical context before you even think to type so kuch as another god damn LETTER in my direction.

I'm guessing there was a black one in every variant. Again, I'm curious if it was altered for Leslie specifically.

I really didn't hear much revision wise. Once it was with Feig it just sort of went forward.

Because it's poorly thought out, overlong, and written like shit.

Oh so you wrote it then

*is immediately destroyed by a shovel hook*

Do you have any fucking clue. Any at all how many fucking years we've been putting up with this fucking Magical Negro bullshit?

This isn't Bagger Vance, Patty is the normal one of the group. The other three all pretty clearly have such dividing quirks that they alienate a shitload of people right off the bat due to how they act
