Pixar is in their sequel phase. 7 of their 11 films dating back to TS3 and look ahead to The Incredibles 2 are sequels (1 prequel). That is a 9 year span which they have committed to expanding on established properties. Some have been great (TS3) while others seem to be there to cash in on merchandise (Cars 2 and 3).

Inside Out was okay at best. I watched it with a friend who also grew up with Disney movies and he said "that is 90 minutes I won't be getting back."

.

Such deep film commentary. I'm amazed.

On topic, all this great reception got me interested, hope to watch it soon.

Just got back from Zootopia. Fantastic movie, highly recommend it. It's a lot deeper than I gave it credit for, almost too on the nose, but I thought it was something that needed to be upfront about its message.

Man, a lot of people really hated Meet the Robinsons? I thought it was good - not great, but good. Just my personal opinion, of course.

I did mention that it's not that bad of a film, but it's definitely not considered one of Disney's greatest, either.

The point of that post was to show how Disney went from making CGI films that were considered middling to poor, to making extremely well received movies with high 80s and 90s on Rotten Tomatoes.

Seriously, whether you like them or not, look at the scores of stuff like Chicken Little, Dinosaur and Meet the Robinsons and compare them to the likes of Tangled, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, and such. By the time they got to Bolt, they finally got their act together when it came to making these types of films.

Just so happens that is the time John Lasseter took control.

Zootopia was damn good, probably my favorite movie in the canon after their new-age Renaissance (probably starting with bolt of Tangled). I'll have more to say on it later, but definitely liked it more than I could have expected. A+ characters, probably like them more than ones from their previous films. Much more relatable.

On the subject of badly reviewed CGI Disney films, I completely forgot about this movie, lol.

So, yeah. It's good. Really good. And the themes are incredibly timely given what's happening this election cycle in particular.

The script was smart and surprisingly layered. Fantastic characters. Probably my favorite film from Disney's studio so far.

There were actually some memorable quotes from that movie.

"Well it's official: my mom was definitely drinking pool water when she was pregnant with me."

No idea why but after all the trailers and pushes it was getting I thought it was gonna be hot garbage. Glad to see at least reviewers didn't think so, I might give it a shot and go see it in theaters

Same feeling. Im shocked. Im glad it's good

I didn't hear anything about the movie until I started seeing previews, but it does look good. I'm normally not one to rush out to see animated movies, though, because they usually don't interest me as much as some others. I enjoy them, but I don't go crazy over them.

Some of Pixar's stuff has been a bit underwhelming, but I've always preferred Disney.

I want to see this, though, and may see it soon. A girl I know wants to go out again, and I think she'll want to see it as she likes animated movies best.

Man I feel the exact opposite. Inside Out dropped the ball on its storytelling in several areas (particularly its lackluster third act) but i looked past that because the visuals and concepts were creative. If i had to pick which of the two is more entertaining on a superficial level its Inside Out all the way.
Funny, I thought the concepts for Inside Out were not creative enough and felt uninspired (the mind is just all balls). I've had my whinge about Inside Out though, I don't like it mostly because I expected a lot more from it.

I'll check out this Zootopia at least when it comes to UK.

Gonna see it sometimes next week. The sloth scene had me in damn tears when I saw it the first time, I'm sure I'm gonna love the film.

Just came back from the movie. Pretty good film, not an amazing film, but colorful, playful, and the commentary just really resonates in today's social climate

This is good news; I trust your opinion. We're going to see it today.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
I'm gonna have to see this, its on pace to be the best rated movie of all time at Rotten Tomatoes right?

Am I alone in thinking the first ten minutes of Up is the best film making of the last fifty years?

And then came the disappointment of the rest of the movie. A movie should be rated as a whole and then Up is one of the weakest Pixar movies.

I dunno I really dug things like the abstract thought sequence, and the dream theater stuff (although reading your post I understand why you didnt). A lot of the character designs inside the mind were really muppety which I also enjoyed. The seemingly endless loopy halls of memory shelves and tubes that you didnt like I thought felt really Seussical and cool.

Some of my issues with the story mirror yours. Sadness felt really one-dimensional. Like you mention, Joy just lays into her for no real reason at the start of the film and I felt like they never really build her up beyond that. There were moments where I was thinking "Okay, so this is where Sadness being saddled with rereading all those manuals is going to pay off" but it'd wind up being another joke about how useless she was. I expected a proper buddy film where the two leads develop and play off each other but it just never delivered on that front.

Yeah, they really loved it. I was in stitches when Martin was going into the animal genitals part.. then Cory comes back with the quip about the lack of blood. Just great.
i loved them out-pettying each other on their complaints lmao "From the outside you BOTH look like dumbasses!"

Disney's been on a consistent roll since Tangled. Maybe even more.

Great quality from them for the last 6 years.

Just got back, enjoyed the hell out of it. Genuine laughs, modern and relevant story. One segment used a really great tilt shift effect that really stood out.

See it.

I came back from the movie. It's pretty good.

Talk about timing with the racial commentary though.

I was discussing this with my wife on the way home. My kid didn't get it, because kids, but yeah.

A friend of mine from High School has been working at Disney since Tangled and it was a TRIP to see her name huge on the screen as a supervising animator. She always drew really fantastic things in our yearbooks, she was in charge of Bogo and a few others.

Big props to her. The Yak, capturing Elba's performance and mixing the behavior of a cape buffalo and Judy were big standouts.
