There is no denying that at the end of this series, or even before that, many people will be disappointed. It's all about expectations. I feel that ultimately a lot of the pulp elements of the story are just there to create artificial excitement - to generate cliffhangers, make it seem like a whodunit, have hooks that people can casually latch onto and talk about, but the real meat of the story which the author wants to tell is a story about a guy regretting how he didn't maximize his childhood, and getting the change to go back and be a better person. In doing so, maybe in the future he will also be a better person. Everything else is really just fluff.

That is honestly what I want out of the show. The actual mystery stuff isn't that interesting. The killer is either the really obvious choices like the teacher, or some complete nobody which who cares at that point. The real interesting stuff for me has been the Satoru, Sachiko, and Kayo dynamics.

The best thing the show can do at this point is keep the mystery stuff simple. I don't want to see overly convoluted time travel shit or any big dumb twist for the killer.

I don't think you'll be dissapointed then :)

If the anime adaption stays true to the manga for the most part of course.

I don't think people are still supposed to be guessing about this, and if they are hanging their hat on the in story reveal/confession they're probably going to be let down.

Glad I never came in here before reading the manga yesterday (got fed up with waiting for episode releases). People acting like you a fool if you didn't pause and work out the identity of the bad guy from a reflection in some broken glass lol

I'm worried about that. Things will be definitely rushed considering the fact there are only 3 episodes left and that hasn't happened yet.

Spoilered for anime only watchers. I kept it vague but spoilered it to be sure.

I think they will speed up the part after that happens and get to where chapter 40-41 is at and finish it from there.

The hinting and foreshadowing by the manga readers without spoiler tags is annoying.

I shouldn't know that the
killer is sooooooo obvious
or whatever. It's tainting my experience but I want to read and discuss the show as the episodes release. Is that not the intention of this thread?

The manga readers haven't been overbearing though, not like with other shows. They're just telling us to keep our expectations in check and saying they can't join in on the discussion because they've read the manga. There are much worst communities with manga/source material readers.

I jumped into the manga after episode 9 and I didn't like the ending (manga). It kinda dulled the journey for me, and definitely lowers my overall opinion of the show. So, whoever was saying to keep expectations in check, I agree. It just didn't end how I thought it would, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure some will love the ending.

Tbh the fact it's only 12 episodes blunted my expectations for a satisfying ending, for an anime like this the episode number should have been in the 20s imo.

I'll be disappointed if there at least isn't a small aspect of the butterfly effect next time he goes to the future.

Like maybe due to never going through this and being more outgoing hes more successful either socially or economically than working at a pizza shop. Maybe he doesn't even know what's her face because he only got to know her via working in the pizza joint.

If it's the exact same future that's just one more disappointment. Which it all points to the future being the exact same except for maybe the people being alive and friends keeping in touch with satoru

I couldn't resist and read the manga, I personally don't mind the ending. Can't wait to talk about it when the anime ends.

Binged the 9 episodes in 2 days..it is interesting but nothing spectacular. The last episode slowed down the main subject of getting out of the murderer loop. How will they wrap this up in the last 3 episodes without rushing and giving a proper explanation.

The manga is ongoing, though.

I just binge-watched this all the way to ep 8. Superb show!
The scene when Kayo cries at breakfast was so powerful. I love this.

This is the greatest anime I've watched in years.
Could anyone recommend me some more in the same theme of mystery or an adult back in a kids body?

Funimation had a more tone deaf response...

Monster was a big deal in manga form, not sure how the anime is. 20th Century Boys is awesome, but only a manga.

I would watch Steins; Gate if you haven't yet. Its not a full mystery, but has an undertone of mystery and thriller to the story. It is pretty amazing overall and considered one of the best anime series of all time by many

.

Way to read the mood Funi.... They changed it to a picture of Ramon later, but I guess making light of child abuse is OK, since it's not the real world and all...

+1 for Steins;Gate. It's more of a comedy in the beginning but shit gets real eventually.

I don't have enough hands to facepalm simultaneously.

I echo the Steins;Gate recommendation.
Erased feels faster-paced though, in a good way.

My friend has been recommending this to me for a while now and I finally got around to it.

Ho.
Ly.
Shit.

This show is so damn good. It's been a very long time since I have felt this way about a show before. I thought that I had watched almost all of the great anime shows. I never imagined that there would be one currently airing. I started watching it just before bed last night and the first episode had me hooked. I ended up watching the next 5 episodes immediately and finally forced myself to sleep since I had school. Now I am all caught up and I can't wait to watch the next episode. It is just so good.

This show has everything, great art style/character designs, awesome main character, very strong side characters, captivating mystery, crazy tense moments, awesome music (that OP and ED, and that shit-just-got-real Madoka Magica type music

), excellent animation and amazing story.

I looked at the author's other works on MAL and it's really a shame. I guess he is Satoru. :p

So, what do you guys think is the real point of the story if not the mystery of the serial killer? Because no way the writer wanted to really make it just about that. He literally wrote in like...two possible suspects and also makes the whole story so heavy handed. If it really is who we think it is then we literally knew this from like, the second/third episode right?

Still haven't read the manga because I think the anime is done so damn well but I mean, it HAS to be who we all think it is right? They would have to seriously go out of their way to justify any other person being the killer and they just don't have enough episodes to do that with.

So again, was the story really just supposed to be about the mystery? Because while I have enjoyed the anime, in the end it would seriously just end up being a sub-par mystery anime.

Spending so much time on Kayo even though she really isn't a major factor in the overall narrative here, seeing as she's gone and things are just exactly the same except with two other students, is just weird.

It'll be nuts if most of the show was spent on Kayo and then she just leaves and...that's it?

It's 4AM and just watched the latest episode and felt like ranting.

That part of the narrative always sucked to me and I don't know what the point is now that it has become the focus. There's nothing suspenseful or well done about the killer angle.

I was always hopeful that the mystery killer would pay off but Jesus all of the fucking ending scenes, all of the silly ominous looks. Like who the fuck does that shit that early on if that's the suspect everybody thinks. It was teaching parody red herring levels but no it was for real.

Fuck the pain away

The real point of the story is stated pretty clearly early on but easily gets lost in the the thrill of the storyline. If you'd like to know, send me a PM and I'll explain it. I don't want to put a bunch of spoilers, even with the spoiler tag as folks are still watching it.

I really hope the
teacher
isn't the killer seems like a too obvious choice. Having seen the last few episodes.

Would you prefer the obvious choice or some dumb out of nowhere ITS ME AUSTIN-tier twist? Because there aren't that many episodes left and with the poor way the entire plotline has been handled those are the only two routes I see as possible

I stopped watching as soon as the anime fell into the cliche of running from the police for no apparent reason other than to add needless tension and make the police think that he actually did commit murder. Why wouldn't he just stand there and be like "duh, I have blood on me because I went to see if the person was alive still". It's not like there was any motive either - at least if there was a highly incriminating motive it would make a bit more sense to run. Is the show really worth watching even with this horrible cliche?

Only about 14 hours to go...

Dude, absofreakinlutely. The series literally starts right after that scene..

That dumb plotline only lasted 2 episodes. It went back to being good again after that.

Manga spoiler, dont read.

Just finished it, even the manga ending felt rushed. Felt like there should be a lot more to the story. Guess he figured he fucked up on this go around and is making that spinoff series instead to get a better story going.
