Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

Oh hey I agree 100% thats the way it should be. Until we get more info though I'm going with the idea that Azure will be a requirement.

This also has me thinking about the possibility of Titanfall 2 being cross play if they want since it's multiplat now.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for PS4. Sony has nothing left, nothing they can reveal tomorrow would fix the hole now created. If I am Sony, I wouldn't allow Xbox cross play with PS4 and keep PC cross play.
Why should I let them have my hard earn community? It's like Lonely kid want to join cool PC/PS4 party and his excuse is, I allow you to invite me now, if you don't do it, you are bad person.

but i want to say that xbl as a network is more stable, better environment... i have somehow the feeling that ms better infrastructure is getting dragged down by poor pc/ps4 networks...

Cross platform play with xbox :) Sony obviously had it first with their own platforms and PC and we're yet to see if they'll be okay with it on xbox. Not accusing them of anything and tbh they were the ones that backed it in the first place so good on them.

if voice chat is restricted then the "friends" thing is kinda moot. all we're looking at here is a bigger player pool.

Exactly, none of us do, only Microsoft does, which us why some of us question this rather than blindly follow. Wouldn't put it past Microsoft to make Xbox/ps4 cross play need azure to double dip.

Today is full of surprises.
 
I'm trying to think what this does for a game's lifespan or community. On GAF, for example, the Destiny community was largely PS4. Finding (dependable) GAF X1 players to play with was tough.

Same with something where a specific community might be dying. If a PC player wants to play Battlefront, matchmaking can sometimes be a bitch due to the low player count.

Kinda the same with Rainbow Six: Siege. The GAF Siege community is really organized, has private/custom matches, etc., because there are a lot of players. Being able to be a part of that would be fantastic.

My 2cps on this.

One of the most cited reason to be on Xbox this gen (and last too), including on this very forum, is "My friends are on Xbox" (which is imo a corolary to the Nielsen most cited reason "Brand").
What this announcement potentially implies is that you can (perhaps) get a PC or PS4 and -still- play with your friends who remain on Xbox.
The PS4 has, to a point, that reason too (as market leader) but also happens to be the more attractive option in general as far as consoles go (power/ VR/ number of exclusives, etc).

Personally I think that MS made the move out of necessity (feature parity), and because it goes along with their "move to Win10 PC" plan, but time will tell if it costs them further...

On paper, this announcement seems great, but like everything else with MS, reading the fine print is going to be required, I totally agree. My big question is do they lock this behind UWA on PC, so only UWAs are eligible for this sort of compatibility.

This is an exciting time though, to be sure. Just the fact that MS/Xbox, one of the bigger barriers to such a thing in the past, is open to talking about it so forwardly is a huge step in the right direction for what we ultimately should get. This does go back to reinforcing the notion that they are continuing to further move away from Xbox being a closed-platform environment, but at this point who really cares.
 
I really hope AAA devs embrace this. The Division is the first game in a while where I want a larger player pool. A lot of people I played Destiny with are on PC this time, leaving me without my usual groups. A number of AAA shooters on PC also seem to suffer from dwindling populations, something that's far less common on console.
 
I'm hesitant to think there isn't a twist to this.

The wording refers to Xbox live enabled Games on Windows 10. I feel a large part of this just Microsoft putting good PR on bringing XBL gold to its restricted windows apps and AppStore, the same windows apps that many people are up in arms over lost and restricted features.

What I am not seeing mentioned is Steamworks. I think that it's more what they are hinting at is keeping Steam/non windows 10 store games on the same servers, not just PSN. I can't wait to have a unified multiplayer but I'm sure there is a lot to be figured out before we see this in action.

Parity, it works both ways.
 
Terminology suggestion for thread:

Cross-play: Multiple platforms are able to play with and against eachother in multiplayer servers.
Example: Shuhei searches for a Rocket League match on his PS4 and gets matched into the same server as Gabe, who is playing on Steam.

Cross-party: Players can add friends from, and create parties with, other players from multiple platforms.
Example: Adam, who is playing Destiny on his PS4, sends a party invite to Phil, who is playing on Xbox One.

The gates on cross-play have been thrown open, but a lot of people in the thread are conflating this with cross-party, which is a different beast entirely, and one MS/Sony may stop well short of enabling for a myriad of reasons.
