Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

I like how people assume sony will allow it.

really? I had no idea. what games?

There's no precedent for competing console cross-play MP, unless I'm mistaken. PS4 to PC is one thing, but have Sony ever explicitly said they would allow cross play with Xbox? Or Nintendo?

Happy to be corrected.

.
Cross-Network/Platform games on PS:

- Dreii - PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android
- Pure Chess; Wii U, 3DS, iOS, Android and PS
- Cubemen 2; Wii U, Linux, Mac OS, PC and iOS.

I don't see why Sony would say no when they already allow cross play with every other platform.

Good. Now maybe Warthunder's devs won't have any more excuses for keeping their game off Xbox One. World of Tanks needs some competition.

I think Phil Spencer or Andrew House showing up on one or the other's stage for the press briefings at E3 could be easily one of the greatest moments ever in gaming history simply from the fanboy salt that would flow out of the internet.

It has to be Kaz and Satya

I want it to mean something

with this in place it'll come down in the end to whoever has the better first party games...multi platform games should be multiplatform online

here's an old post from scathezombie, presumably a developer who worked on a game that would have implemented cross-console play, who has already posted in this thread already, that is more recent of sony's "stance" on console cross play

To echo pretty much everyone else and other developers... it's Microsoft.

About 4 years ago, I was working for a publisher that was releasing a multi-platform online shooter for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. The initial plan for the game included cross-platform servers and cross-platform play. Sony didn't care. Microsoft said no. They scrapped cross-platform play altogether since they were going to need separate servers for the Xbox anyway and it would be easier to just maintain 3 separate communities with our current tech than to develop new cross-platform server architecture and authentication system that only 2 of the platforms used. Plus, the publisher didn't want to piss off Microsoft by having cross-platform play be a feature of only PC and PS3.

I would not be surprised if this happens with a lot of other titles who want cross-platform play, but just don't want to bother with it if you still need to setup Microsoft with their own closed system.

So what happens when you're playing an online game and 2 people on PSN and Xbox Live have the same user name?

It'd work fine. Games are supposed to use your internal network ID for tracking and not the display name, anyway, because on Xbox your game is (supposed) to handle the gamertag being changed, same with Steam.

Damn, DLC development for cross platform games could get ridiculous if multiplayer communities are active for much longer.

Out of all the concerns in this thread this is the most legit one lol.

I can see it being handled the same as splitscreen multiplayer. They will probably just put (1) next to one of the player names.

Edit: or something like this

Halo on PS4. Uncharted on Xbox. Internet would melt.

They're probably waiting to see the small print.

And this is why we can't have nice things. I'm sure there is something we can blame MS for in this announcement. I'm sure people will see their evilness in all of this.

MS is kicking open the console doors. Good to see this generation is really starting to innovate.

For me it's great to see MS putting out great ideas to evolve what console gaming is for the better, but I totally HATE and it bothers me how many people still keep attacking them and calling shit out when they are doing good things for gaming. I'm sure only when Sony 'comes around' if that ever happens they will see it as a good thing overall and not MS trying to fool us with some secret scheme.

No point at all for Sony to do fantasy scenario like that. It would benefit MS way more than Sony. What people don't understand about this? Let me give you another example....it's not directly related to the OP but it's what im referring to in my posts of the past couple pages, about how there's so much mind games and underlying neurotic manipulation going on with this type of things. The example: When Phil Spencer compliments Sony, Playstation, a specific game or what have you...he doesn't just do it b/c he's trying to be unbiased and noble. He does it b/c Xbox is gettin there ass kicked to the moon. If the sides were switched and Xbox was winning, Phil wouldnt say a word. But that's not the case so he and other MS ppl drop little nuggets of amicability to the competitor to get good will their way. Look at how many threads have been made for those type of things where Phil says something nice about the competition....IT'S NOT B/C HE WANTS TO BE NICE AND AMICABLE, it's b/c MS is getting their ass whooped.

This announcement is similar. It has some good intentions but equally as PR intentions...b/c he knows Sony won't allow it (benefits MS more than Sony as many have mentioned, so it makes no sense), so like Diddy Kong so eloquently said:
Sony does; they risk major benefit to MS. Sony doesn't; they look bad.
It's a win win for MS and a lose lose for Sony.

If most people are buying PS4 & it start a snowball effect where others buy it because they want to play against their friends & you're the company that's getting the bad end of the stick why wouldn't you make this move to get yourself in on the benefits of people buying PS4s?

You can't change your name on PSN though, but as another poster said there would probably be a (1) or something next to their name.

While I am not completely disagreeing, how does this benefit MSFT unless there was a financial catch?

I have no doubt Sony will allow it, if they not already do, that is.

If Nintendo wants to attract 3rd parties (and a lot of gamers playing these games on THEIR platform), it's their hand which is forced right now.
I wouldn't be as certain. There's less benefit for them than there is for Nintendo and Microsoft.

I see people mentioning SFV. How can they cross play with a Xbone version that doesn't exist ? Will Microsoft help funding the future Xbone version ?

A lot of the posts about SFV are what-if scenarios if Capcom had not decided to go exclusive with Sony. What we know now is SFV is getting torn apart by players saying it's a rushed out, half-game, and SFV is dead, blah, blah, blah.

Now it's interesting to consider what might have happened if Capcom had chosen to wait until much later to release the game themselves.

So, was getting out SFV fast with Sony worth it if the game could have come out later perhaps and/or fared better, with only Capcom's funding, but a 3-platofrm combined online pool, meaning more sales on more platforms/sales, and perhaps not a rushed game? Who knows? But the speculation is interesting given how poorly it seems to be performing based on their decisions.

It benefits Microsoft by somewhat nullifying one of the PS4's advantages (being more popular, and therefore having a greater likelihood that your friends are playing on PS4).

It would benefit MS way more than Sony. What people don't understand about this?

It only benefits Microsoft slightly more than Sony.

The reasons a person decides to buy a multiplayer game for one system or another are generally, in no particular order, where do my friends play, what has the larger community, and what has the better performance.

Cross-platform play ... doesn't really affect any of those. It doesn't affect where your friends already are and it doesn't affect performance per console. The only one of those it indirectly affects is community. I say indirectly because cross-platform play doesn't touch things like parties or chat. Outside of a developer creating their own entire account, party, chat, VOIP system (which some MMOs already do) you'll still be locked into XBL or PSN for that. It would only allow you to join matchmaking services with players from other platforms - similar to how Rocket League works. I can join my PSN friends and create a party and play with them - or I can random get thrown in with PC players. I can't join my PC friends and create a party with them from PSN. The individual communities are still intact - but everyone gets the benefit of faster queue times.

XBL players will get significantly faster queue times (depending on the game and internal community size) and PSN players will get slightly faster queue times.

That's it. It's really not enough of a 'loss', or benefit to MS, for Sony to suddenly change their past 10+ years of policy over.

So what happens when you're playing an online game and 2 people on PSN and Xbox Live have the same user name?
Steam makes the second person of the same name that joined the server have a 1 but their name and so on. Either that or simply putting the system icon next to their name.

Wasn't the NX already supposed to do this?

Seeing as we dont even know what the name of the console will be....I dont think we can really say what the NX will/wont do.

I mean its not even out yet. Remember...when MS announced all the orig XBO policies Sony was gonna do the same with PS4.

According to many ppl.

You honestly think MS is changing this long term policy for purely altruistic reasons, because they love us and want us to be happy?

Fine, good for you. But this isn't "a great idea to evolve console gaming", it's just coming round to what everyone else has been doing for years.

So I ask myself, what changed? And until we get the details of their "open invitation" I'm going to assume that there is strategic advantage for MS in what they are doing, and so Sony would be smart to check it out properly before jumping in feet first.

Capcom has already said it is a PS4 exclusive and have been absolutely clear that it is for the life of the title. Or at least, that's what I got from their statements.

I didn't think they left any room for interpretation.
