Bloodborne: The Card Game announced

Looks like Warhammer: Invasion, CoC, and Game of Thrones are all LCGs. They all also have "The Card Game" in their titles, which Bloodborne shares, so it looks like it might turn out to be an LCG as well. I used to be way into TCGs/CCGs in the mid-late 2000s, but collecting was almost always a pain. The LCG model is exactly what those types of games should be in the modern era imo. Bodes well for Bloodborne if so.
If this is an LCG I would die. A stand-alone boxed card game seems more likely to me, but I'd be happy with an LCG.

A boxed game would make sense if they can cram all of Bloodborne into a single set (thus negating the need for expansions). Though I would personally still look at it as an LCG, just without expansions. What's important to me is the "complete game in a box" aspect. Whoever came up with that idea (FFG?) is a genius. I ain't about that TCG collecting life anymore :p

Yeah Fantasy Flight was the one who popularized it to compete with Wizards of the Coast (MtG). It's definitely a friendlier format. Nethack and Warhammer:Invasion are two of the best card games I own, the latter having been made by Mr. Lang.

Yeah, the TCG model might make sense if you're only playing that one game, but it quickly falls apart when juggling multiple games. Back in the day I was into multiple TCGs, and it was just a big fat mess. Had to pool cards with friends to even stand a chance, and it was still a tremendous money sink keeping up with Yugioh, MtG, VS system. etc. LCGs make so much damn sense that it blows my mind they didn't come about earlier. Really hoping Bloodborne follows the same model. Being an LCG would also mean that it's most likely a constructed deck game, which I really prefer compared to deckbuilding games (not that there's anything wrong with them!).

Yeah, I can never go back to doing another TCG again. Really interested in this, I was just about to run out of ways to dump more money into Bloodborne.

I wonder how the groupthink (co-op?) aspect will come into play. If someone asked me to design a competitive Bloodborne card game, I would probably have it so that a player's deck consists of both cards to upgrade that player's hunter, and enemies to throw at the opposing player's hunter. Though there's obviously no co-op aspect to that. Maybe it will be closer to Upper Deck's Legendary, where all players team up to defeat "A.I." enemies, and the player that performs the best wins?

Lots of directions they can take it. At least the designer sounds like he's a tabletop god among men.

I'm so excited for this. I've been on a massive tabletop kick lately and I think this could potentially be a ton of fun.

Hope it's a LCG. While I wasn't a fan of the game the lore always interested me so definitely going to keep my eye on this

Unless I missed something, Eric Lang's other games with "The Card Game" in the title all seem to be LCGs, so you might just be in luck.

That's more a function of them being released by Fantasy Flight Games, who invented the LCG format and use it as one of their major publishing models.

If it's going through them, it's possible that it could be like Game of Thrones where there's a mix of standalone boxed versions and small/large expansions.

I'm probably using the term LCG a bit too liberally. "Constructed deck card game in a box" is more what I'm going for, but it's a bit of a mouthful :p

TCG ? CCG?? FGC??? LGC???? OCTGN ?????!!!!
Among all this acronymus I really have no idea what has being discussed here :(

CCG and TCG = Collectible/trading card game, where cards are at least partially distributed in random packs

LCG = Living card game, which consists only of non-random cards released in boxed sets and expansions. More like a board game, but you still build your own deck.

TCG = trading card game = competitive constructed deck card game where you are more or less forced to purchase packs of random cards as they are released in order to keep up with the game.

CCG = collectable card game = basically same as above.

FFG = Fantasy Flight Games = Tabletop game publisher and pioneers of the "Living Card Game" model. They also have it trademarked IIRC.

LGC = living card game = basically a TCG/CCG in gameplay, but cards are acquired through boxed sets that contain fixed quantities of certain cards, thus making them cheaper and less frustrating to keep up with as new products are released. May or may not cure cancer.

OCTGN = unofficial PC program that is basically a card game "emulator". Enables online play of various card games.

edit - beat

edit 2 - non-FFG games can be released with an LCG model, but they just can't be officially called LCGs.

It's cool mini or not. So get ready to do a kickstarter for all the kickstarter exclusives, and feel bad when the game's bad.

And LCG = Trademarked by FFG, so this will definitely not be called that by CMoNot even thought it might be in it practice.

Weird. I never would have thought of A card game for Bloodborne. I hope it works. I know this guy is supposed to be great, but I still have my doubts.

Oh I missed the publisher part. Yeah this is probably a one-off, but they could continue it in an LCG-ish fashion.

Even as a one-off, I could see it having some legs. The chalice dungeon premise opens up some thematic design space for different ritual offerings that can universally change the game during setup. Maybe something similar to the schemes and masterminds of Marvel Legendary. Regular chalice = no effect, Defiled chalice = all monsters deal double damage, or something like that.

Could be neat.

I think Bloodborne's mechanics make it already much more suited to creating a card game than some of the other properties he's worked on like Call of Cthulhu.

"risk management" and "group think" makes me think it's going to be a push-your-luck type of game like Incan Gold or Welcome to the Dungeon, perhaps with some extras to mitigate extreme bullshit. It doesn't sound like an LCG-style card game to me at all.

That was just going off the name "Bloodborne: the Card Game". The designer's other games that include "The Card Game" in their titles all seem to be LCG-style games (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
