Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

I don't see 4k AAA games possible yet in a console sold at a normal price for a console. But I could see it used as USP because some games could run at 4k.

It will be interesting if all 3 console manufacturers will go the iterative consoles way.

Can´t we just copy&paste everything from the Xbox One+ thread and close this up here :D

I have a feeling that a number of posters would contradict themselves if done so.

I don't understand, what's so wrong about traditional console generation? Why IPad model have to be the only way to go?
Sure, every generation will start from zero install base, but developer could always do cross gen port if they feel the need as usual.

They don't need to start from scratch now that they use pretty standard PC components and they don't need a PS4.5 to allow BC to become the norm.

This is the traditional console generation. Console generations don't usually last 8-9 years, they last half that. And this isn't an iPad model, because you are not getting a new one every year.

How is that different from PS3 owners having the inferior version of eg Fifa when ps4 comes out? There are millions of people that bought a PS3 the year that PS4 came out. Do you think they are pissed at playing inferior games? No - they bought the PS3 late in the generation at a price that suited them. They wouldn't have been in the market for a Ps4 for a few more years anyway

What you're suggesting is removing choice - to prevent a few people from feeling upset, let's just force everyone to be held back
Does FIFA have cross platform multiplayer? Because if not then your example is not the same thing as the person you quoted. Some people don't want to play Uncharted 5 multiplayer at 30fps while others are playing at 60fps, and that's understandable.

Me neither.
Like its fine if you're cool with the change if it happens but no ones comparisons in this thread has made any sense.

Ps3 and ps4? No comeon thats not a good comparison

Smartphones,tvs, appliances? No.

Maybe to computers sure since pc gaming has been doing this already

Smartphones cost more than consoles, when you add in the carrier contracts or just by them outright.

People buy new phones every 3 to 4 years. Many people upgrade every single year.

The PS4 is due for a hardware upgrade.

Cellphones are an integral part of people's live nowadays. In fact I don't even think they should be called phones nowadays, they're portable convergence devices with tons of applications of which one is the ability to make and take phone calls. People are pretty much conditioned to upgrade this things every couple years or so.

Console gamers don't buy consoles expecting for an 'upgraded' version to hit mid-generation. And I wouldn't even call it mid-gen at the moment, the ps4 and XB1 are barely 2.5 years old.

They don't need to start from scratch now that they use pretty standard PC components and they don't need a PS4.5 to allow BC to become the norm.

That's the point. Why do we need PS4.5? A PS5 in 2018/2019 will do full BC just fine, without any half gen shit too, no one pissed.

PS4 install base is massive and only looking to get bigger. it's not really a bridge they want to burn for another ~3 years. as for whether this is the right way to go about it is a question mark

If it doesn't create a divide between 'games only playable on PS4.5 vs PS4', I don't see a problem with it. To me it sounds like they might want to use PS4.5 as a tool for 4K tv adoption the same way PS3 and 360 helped push adoption of HD LCD flatscreens. So many people dumped their CRT tvs for flatscreen as a direct result of the HD console era.

Most of sony's studios haven't even got one title out on PS4. Hell, a lot of AAA studios haven't gotten around to releasing some major titles. 2018-1019 would be terrible for them. As well, 2018-2019 would not have anything in the thermal envelope range of consoles that would justify a new console. However, it'd have enough to do a halfway gen bump.

Phones are a fashion item. Most of the people I know that upgrade phones on yearly basis run the same CPU/GPU light apps, take vertical videos and would probably still be fine with a 4S.

So Sony is going to release a whole new gadget (psVR) in October with the price of a console and in addition and upgraded version of their console with a "cheap" price? So if I want to buy the whole new experience it will cost around 1000 dollars? And all my library of games or a big part will be "obsolete" and they are going to make AGAIN remakes of ps4 games?

sounds legit. Time to look for another hobby the. Gaming is getting expensive and is a hobby aimed for a small part of a population that have the money to buy a 60 dollar game for a semi-complete experience because all games are tending to the DLC/season pass scheme and you are being primed to buy accessories for a better experience telling you that that is the real way to play the game.

I think I'm out, sadly some people including me, is getting poorer everyday and this society is getting a lot for ambitious and more consumer-monger. They are selling greatness and experience after all.

Out/

But isn't CPU the bottleneck for PS4? Seems like going for that would have been a smarter move than aiming for 4K resolution on games. Is the penetration of 4K TVs that high? Would be pretty interesting if this were true though.

I'd be OK with an upgraded PS4 which added features without changing its core functionality, such as 4K video playback or improved load times (like PSP), but if this extra processing power ended harming the original model owners (the new 3ds and Zelda bullshit), it's going to be the PC experience in consoles for me. Fun when you are up to date, hell when you let your hardware phase out until you upgrade again.

At least with consoles I always felt safe. Maybe not the Best graphics, but the games would run. If I lose that... Well, I will still have a Netflix player :(

We usually start getting news of the next system a few years before it comes out. Every time.

None of Sony's consoles have come out 4 years after their successor, so unless this console is being announced 2 years early, this is not going to be a standard console generation.

PS1 to PS2 was 5 years 3 months.
PS2 to PS3 was over 6 and a half years
PS3 to PS4 was 7 years

PSP to Vita was 7 years.

If you think 2018/2019 is too soon, hows a half gen help in 2018?

It'd allow current gen into 2021-2022 and the console-PC delta stays about the same. This revision would bring console GPUs to around half the performance of mid-high end GPUs which is where they were at the beginning of the generation. For developers, it means they are guaranteed everything they are doing is ABI compatible.

How is that different from PS3 owners having the inferior version of eg Fifa when ps4 comes out?
Huh? It is COMPLETELY different. How is that comparable? A PS3 player can only play against another PS3 player, they can't play a PS4 player. My point still stands, a launch PS4 player playing against a new model PS4 player will be at a disadvantage.

But they will force to support the platform that not ABI compatible too, how's that helping?

Except the original Xbox lasted 4 years, and Nintendo's and Sega's systems all kept at around a 5 year cycle. And with the exception of the Xbox One and PS4, many previous consoles tended to be announced and in the public eye for two or more years (albeit usually via code-names rather than their final name). There were rumors about the PS3 as early as 2004 and early 2005, and other systems also had executives talking about the features of their yet-to-be named system years before their eventual release date.

Last gen was a fluke, both HD system had mid-gen reboots (Kinect, major PS3 rebranding) that made them viable for much longer than they normally would have been.

Sony wouldn't have informed the developers already for a console coming out in much more than a year.
I'm not a developer but I would think a year would be about the minimum amount of time to start preparing for new hardware.

Anyway this article says:

one source told us that the device felt “exploratory” and that it may not even be released this year.

Not if it's just an increment on the same architecture.

"not this year" is not the same with "more than a year".

What? PS4.5 would be ABI compatible cause it's running on the same OS. PS5 would not be entirely ABI compatible. At 2021(or pushing into 2022), this gen would be 8-9 years. That's enough time to release multiple games.

And people on PC's have been getting along fine with it for decades. Don't make it bigger than what it is.

103 pages in...and i still dont get the smartphone comparisons,or TV's for that matter

It doesn't make any sense because, when people (well, 95% of people) buy a new smartphone, it's for using the camera, Facebook, Twitter, Social things, play little games (not THAT powerful games), so 1: they don't need to upgrade at every iteration of the phone, every 3 iterations seems fine. And 2: for me it's important that when you buy a product you KNOW that it will be outdated by a new model in 1 year, or 2 years. When people bought PS4 nobody knew that you'll need to change your console in 2 or 3 years...

And yes, when you buy a phone it's not for the same reason than when you buy a console, I think that less than 5% of people buy a phone to play high end smartphone games... But when you buy a console... Since it's a console, it's obviously for GAMES. So gamers want the best version of their games (look at all those threads about XOvsPS4), if now you go buy DriveClub 2 (as exemple) for 60$, but you know that your friend who have the PS4K buy the game for the same price, and he will run the game better... It's annoying, you feel like you get a "under version", not the full experience than can offer the console... And for gaming IT IS important. For a phone... Whatever phone I use to play Angry Birds, Clash of Clans or whatever F2P game, use facebook, twitter, it's ok, I don't need the most high end iPhone to do so, I can keep the iPhone 5 until iPhone 7 release.

Ok, i understand the logic. So in 2021 where PS5 release, what happen to PS4.5 which only at year 3?

This is good news. I hope this is the trend as long as all my games are backwards compatible. Really tired of having to buy RE4 for every console, i should just get it on PC, lol.

Honestly I think this is more due to competition from PC than smart phones. Both companies know that they have an underpowered machine and they now have to play "catch up" to PCs. I'm sure they can code it to where the game will recognize if you have a PS4.5 and if you have a 4K TV. If not they can give us an option to run the game in 1080p or 4K just like how in The Last of Us allows us to lock the framerate. As long as it runs fine on both consoles, I see nothing wrong with it, why are people up in arms about this? Do you guys really want an outdated machine for another 6-8 years? I sure as hell don't.

But wasnt that the case in the previous generations?

And people on PC's have been getting along fine with it for decades. Don't make it bigger than what it is.

People on PCs can and will go to great lengths to make their games run as well as possible, though. I remember downloading all kinds of CS configs to reach that stable 60 back in the day.

I'd assume that won't be possible on PS4/PS4.5. It's gonna be 30fps players vs 60fps players, and that'd be that.

This is what keeps real progress from happening. Remember all the people arguing we didn't need PS4 and Xbone to come yet? It's crazy people don't want choice because they can't or won't buy something.

The perceived value of the consoles will plumet and PCs will become the smart looking option.
So suddenly, all at once, the average console user no longer minds buying expensive PC parts. No longer minds opening up his computer and installing parts. No longer minds dealing with Windows and drivers and issues. No longer minds not playing Sony's first-party titles. No longer minds comfy couch. No longer minds not playing only with a gamepad. No longer minds uneven playing field in MP. No longer minds Trophies. No longer minds losing his amassed PS+ game collection. No longer minds not having a physical disc. No longer minds not playing with his friends.

A smartphone is something you use all the time, everyday.

So is the PS4

All I know is Digital Foundry is going to need a lot more employees.

Compare:

PS4
XboxOne
NX
PS4.5
XboxTwo
PC Ultra Settings
PC Low Settings

The reviews are gonna take an hour.

I think the problem is that console players don't want a PC experience.

Pretty much. Part of the reason I buy consoles is for the level playing field, I was hoping Sony would continue with their traditional console module after MS announced their plans. This is bullshit and I'm not sure if I want to be apart of consoles if this is the route they are going.

Make every games cross gen is the bigger held back for me.
