Batman v Superman Spoiler Thread: Don't believe everything you read, Son

You really gotta take Batman's no kill thing at face value.
Do you know how common it is for people to accidentally die from a single punch? More than you would think. You just gotta accept that none of the guys Batman repeatedly punches dies by mistake. It's the same with explosions and the like for me.

IMO the much more possibly "controversial" thing is the branding.

Yeah but in most comics where the hero does stuff but doesn't kill them...a lot of the time it's still injuries that cripple them in some way, it's not really Arkham exclusive, just more obvious because some of the takedowns etc are quite brutal. The cars thing actually seems slightly more plausible...because they're not standing right next to a door, they're standing a short distance away (albeit still very close) and they're probably still going to be burnt etc quite seriously.

But yeah, nothing we've heard actually suggest Batfleck kills. Just that he brands people. It'd be uber controversial if they had Batman actively use a gun. I suspect the "some people might find Snyder's vision of batman controversial" is due to his brutality and branding etc. Apart from a couple of sequences it sort of felt like Bale's Batman had all the threat of a wet paper towel, although they actually drew attention to that in the movie with maroni or something.

Pretty much this. You've got to take a "never saw the bodies" approach. EVERYTHING Batman does would result in a fairly serious bodycount IRL, even if it's only by accident. Ya gotta just roll with it.

Terrio did say that that he'd have laughed if you'd told him a few years ago the most intellectually stimulating and tough work of his career would be a superhero film. Dude obviously did his homework on a slightly Morrison level (he name checked Morrison when talking about the god concept for the JL movie/JL in general).

Any kind of Morrison influence on the movies will be amazing in my eyes.

I'll probably end up rolling my eyes at it like when Civil War was showing their casualties numbers. It's just part of the package I suppose. I just hope the batbrand being a death sentence thing is false.

I'm not offended by Batman crippling, but even the arkham games didn't have Batman shooting rockets at cars like the trailer did, just drones. Maybe it's some convenient non-lethal missile tech that Bruce uses. Even TDKR had him expressly saying he used rubber bullets.

Yeah but in TDKR he really fucked up a lot of those criminals. Most of the mutants probably ended up dead. I don't mind either, considering Batfleck seems to he heavily inspired by TDKR Bats anyways.

So is Superman's identity revealed to the public in this film? Why else would Clark be having a funeral?

The memorial service for Superman would be for the world to mourn its greatest hero, for statesmen and world leaders and throngs of huddled masses to share their collective grief at the loss of this icon. A small, private service in Smallville would be for the people who knew and loved him best, not as Superman but as Clark Kent, the real man behind the suit. Kind of like how Batman dies at the end of TDKR and gets a bronze statue in city hall, and Bruce Wayne is quietly buried next to his parents with only the inner circle in attendance.

Yeah they were specified immobilizer missiles. It's not so much the method that bothers me it's the intent at this point. Though the method does require some suspension of disbelief the more lethal looking it gets.

He probably figured Bane was strong enough to deal with it, given the Arkham Origins fight, I think Bane could take a hit from the batmobile.

Ah that...sorta makes sense. I could understand it in TDKR it's just for some reason I have trouble getting my head around it in BvS. I mean if we the audience know he's not dead before the end of the film then fair enough, because it's not a twist or a shock it's just the events in universe. Not madly keen on the idea of them not bringing him back before the end because it means part of JL or the next chronological movie will have to show him coming back and people's reactions...but then again I can already imagine the mighty Starro standing over a conquered JL only for the sun to come and Superman do a John Cena.

Which is rather the point of what he's saying. If the movie says that that didn't kill him, then it didn't kill him. Either suspend your disbelief and enjoy the movie or spend your day angsting over all the guys who "totally should have died."
 
You know how in videogames you can pop a guy with 12 rounds to the chest and he'll either keep standing as if nothing happened or maybe he'll wince and take cover? That is basically comic book (movie) physics. You can have your head smashed through the floor and it may or may not knock you out but you will definitely be fine a bit later.

Sorta this? it's all suspension of disbelief. It's serious enough to tell a story with contextual consequences but if people can believe and buy into the fantasy that these characters exist but can't believe that someone lives after a punch or flip...if they say they don't kill, they don't kill unless shown or stated otherwise.

I'm curious to see how reactions will play out with it being a reverse TDKR situation.

In the book Batman "dies" so technically the fight is lost but he was "right". In Batman v Superman he "loses" the fight but his death makes him "right" (just roll with me on this for a sec).

Now people will gladly tell you that Batman stands tall in TDKR but will the reverse hold true for Superman in BvS?
 
Man, the visual of a dead Supes after he sacrificed himself in combination with ''This is my world''...Superman-GAF is going to cry.

True, but at the same time. Suspense of disbelief is something earned by the filmmakers. It's not the audiences fault if something is so ridiculous that it breaks their disbelief.

If this is Batman in control of the Batwing here, then yeah. I can totally see that breaking someone out of their suspense of disbelief.

Yes this is Superman's movie the more I think about it. Its about Supes saving the world and Batman from his own demons.

Isn't Alfred in control of the Batwing during that scene? That's the warehouse where Batman wrecks everyone, right?
If Alfred is ex-SAS/special forces like in Earth One/Gotham, I can see him having no qualms about killing

I don't think he does. Verendus just vouched for that one description, and that description features Batman only stopping his beating Superman to death because of Lois.

So he wins the fight, and then he survives the movie. Hell, the means by which Superman finishes off Doomsday is partially why Superman dies, and that means was created by Bruce as well.

Batman Wins.

But no one in Smallville knows his secret. One kid from his past sort of recognised him, but it's not like an entire town is going to keep his secret and then come out to hold a private funeral.

I think it could be good depending on how it plays out. Superman is about being noble and sacrificing. There really isn't a more heroic action than sacrificing your life. So long as they play it out correctly and not being tone deaf.

The only issue I have with it is that it cheapens death in the DCEU.


I was hoping the fight would end in a draw, but I'm sure zealot batman fans will never forget this and take it as absolute canon like they do with TDKR.
 
5 bucks says there will be Christ-like imagery of his death, carrying on the tradition of past directors.
 
Honestly reading about the Bat Branding stuff now and I do not understand the hoopla? He is just identifying those with the most heinous of crimes with the bat branding. Makes it easier for Gotham's justice system to decide on the penalty appropriate for those crimes in accordance with law. If that involves capital punishment then it is more on Gotham's laws and less on Batman. I honestly see no problem with this if this is all there is to it lol. I was expecting a straight up execution by Batman himself.

I think the movie will be pretty clear that Superman lets him win because he was holding back. Atleast I hope it does.

Martha knows his secret, and Martha's not going to be content to mourn her son being one of thousands in a crowd lighting candles at a monolithic monument to the Man of Steel. She's going to bury her only son next to his father.
