Woah wait a second--this isn't the Civil War OT...

the Nolan cowl is so awful

It's possible but then again, I don't think anyone would be surprised at this point if it failed to reach those numbers.

I think my threshold for surprise is that 150 number. If it makes less than that this weekend, then I think I'll have misjudged the immediate potency of this narrative that's already setting in the entertainment press (Variety/THR have both already done articles solely about the RT rating, full of choice negative quotes - the negative feedback cycle is already spinning up like the Hadron Collider)

In rosier news, opening weekend in China seems to be pointing towards a ~$70M 3-day take.

That would give it a total in TFA's $125M range at worst.

"the anti-christ of Super Hero movies" is certainly as attention grabbing of a headline as you can get.

Dead raised a good question in the RT thread (hope you don't mind, Dead):

At this point I am wondering why WB didn't just have an embargo til release day.

Did they think critical reception would not be as bad is it is?

Release Day embargo is sketchy, but it's got to do less damage than what is happening right now.

I don't mind.

I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that WB are totally blindsided by the reception

No way they expected this, even if they were super cautious.

The narrative is gearing up hard. With reviews harsher than Man of Steel and the tomato-meter dropping it could get ugly.

Dead raised a good question in the RT thread (hope you don't mind, Dead):

I think release-day embargos have become synonymous with "the movie's shit" by this point, so I doubt that would have helped. It's not the gaming industry. Also, the several thousand people who attended early screeners would still be taking to forums, twitter, etc.

I'm still thinking 175-185 is possible.

I mean, the narrative has started to set up pretty fucking quickly already, but I don't know if that's going to have happened in time to knock 20-30 mil off the OW.

Warners basically has to hope now that they've got a series on their hands that is as relatively critic proof as Transformers. That's their best case scenario. They have to hope that Snyder is a better Bay than Bay is, in that he somehow constructs movies that have a repellent forcefield of pure stupid that keeps any critical assault from even remotely denting its earnings.

The OS market (China) has really picked up the Transformers franchise while on the domestic side it failed to crack 250M (even if it was some kind of reboot). I think WB can get away with a film like this getting horrible reviews as the intrigue and of seeing these two characters on screen can still make for a good BO haul. I don't think they can get away with having Snyder directed films continually bombing with critics and hoping audiences still turn out in droves.

The spectacle of seeing these characters on screen together will wear overtime and there has to be something more to it.

I've been poking a lot of fun at this movie in these threads, but I wanna make it clear.

I love Batman. I love Superman. I actually like Snyder's Watchmen for what it is.

I really wanted this to be good. I'm seeing it tomorrow night regardless, because I just need to know...everything. All of it.

Still watching this on Saturday. Gonna rewatch Man of Steel on Friday. Catching this in Dolby Atmos in 2D. Wish I had a real IMAX cinema in this country instead of digital shit that only screens the IMAX 3D version when one is available. Grrrrr.

DO YOUR WORST SNYDER, YOU CAN'T HURT ME ANYMORE!

B-b-b-but all the early impressions were positive!

lol I suppose. At the very least, his movie is already forgotten and will always be a footnote at best. This movie is going to be discussed to death for a while if MoS is anything to go by.
Only if a decent amount of people actually like the movie. Fantastic Four is universally reviled, so not much discussion there if everyone agrees it's awful.

How'd you get that news?

Chinese presales are tracked. As such, they can be compared to similar films to get a decent approximation of the opening weekend, as we get closer to that point. China's Midnight Friday launch is only a bit over 12 hours away now.

Total weekend presales were around $9M USD earlier today. They should start ramping up quickly now that things are in the final stretch.

I am going to see it in about 6 hours, and I am really excited.
I haven't been spoiled much, but have gotten the gist of the complaints against the movie, but I am somehow even more excited to see it. I get the feeling I will still really like it. I quite like MoS after all.

Somewhere, Josh Trank's taking the biggest sigh of relief.

Josh Trank has no career now. Snyder gets to play action figures with the entire justice League roster before he likely gets the boot

And honestly because of the success that this movie will still likely be financially I think he'll get to do other non dc projects in the end

I'm already preparing the underground gaf counter-cycle. Everyone will shit on it in the next two weeks but in two years time you'll inexplicably have all these "BvS was so good" threads.

IMDB scores take forever to normalize with actual public opinion. First few days/weeks are just fanboy sandbagging wars.

Every major blockbuster starts high. Sometimes that doesn't last through the weekend, other times it takes a year or two for the score to slowly drop.

What an oppressively joyless and stupid movie. And ponderous as fuck too. Snyder seems satisfied just co-opting iconic imagery from much better stories, rather than coming up with anything original. Action scenes weren't even that good. Ending was a complete mess. DC cinematic universe is still entirely salvageable though.

First 30 minutes are the best part. Wonder Woman was cool.

5/10
