I wished we could make a list of all the possible options we've came up with. Lots of good stuff has been said in this thread.
Mobile gaming is a big thing these days, and by design it requires that some parts of the display are obscured for the sake of controlling the game in a way or the other. But according to this "school of thought" it shouldn't exist at all 🤔There is a dominant school of thought that is not willing to sacrifice any image information. You will not counteract this point of view. There is virtually no argument you can make in the defense of obscuring information on screen. Saying the information is not crucial is pretty much saying it's pointless, and now you're arguing that it's good or reasonable to have pointless information on screen.
If the information isn't valuable, it should not be on screen at all.
If it the information on screen isn't valuable, then it shouldn't be there to begin with.
This is true in every visual medium and is a basic building block of visual design. Photography, cinematography, and gaming.
What developer would think "hmmm... what information should we put on the edges of the screen that literally doesn't matter at all?" How could they even do that? It would have to be a static frame - some kind of blinder on the left and right.
You don't add things that don't matter. Design that encourages doing this is just not good design. It's at odds with the entire visual philosophy.
Nintendo has a lot to prove with this design.
Yeah I can now see where you (and others) are coming from!
I'm actually getting pretty excited to see how this pans out!
This. I posted a pic days ago how it would be used in a actual NX game and possible VC:

Well then the home console would be severely underpowered to make it very cheap. Its not the first time they have released a very underpowered console.
Since there was another leak that the home console would include at least a mobile unit, here is what i think it will look like:
1) The home console is severely underpowered, matching the handheld capabilities. It comes with a handheld. It can be used as a controller or a handheld. The focus of the home console is social play. Your friends can bring their handhelds to play along, and maybe their phones too.
2) The handheld is just a handheld. You can bring it to your friends house and play games on the TV.
3) They do not want ps4/xbox multiplatform games. They want IOS and android multiplatfrom games, hence no buttons.
4) Its a superior IOS experience since it has 2 analogue sticks.

It is? Because you don't like what you see in pictures, still not confirmed as either real or fake, showing nothing but the front of a device with a black screen?
That's like ... the mother of all jumping to conclusions.
There's no picture of the back, where buttons or additional input options might be.
There's no picture of the device running anything. (The white one was deemed more fake than real due to the weird on-screen stuff)
There's basically nothing, but 3 pictures and 152 pages of speculation, "confirming", "denying", jumping to conclusions, overreactions ... and a massive amount of trees and Ninjas.
Apparently not, because the WiiU hate and people's prejudice with the gamepad are going strong here. Sure, you don't have to like the gamepad handling, that's fine, just like you don't have to like the Wii Remote or the Xbox controller. It's still a new way to implement fresh ideas into gaming and I (like many others) have enjoyed the WiiU because of the gamepad (or despite).
We don't know how different this is, and even if it's not revolutionary different, iteration is the key to success. If (perceived) failure of an original concept had to mean the end of said concept for all time, we'd live in a very boring world (with far fewer planes because I don't think flying humans originally went very well, as a concept).

I thought of that a ways back.
I asked what the drawbacks would be but no one answered.
There are a lot of internals that need to be included to effectively function as two different controllers, meaning the hardware would have to be kind of big.
Battery life would take a huge hit.
Ergonomics would be a mess.
They could do buttons on the back, but I can;t imagine it will be just a traditional controller layout.
Yup
Buttons on the back (outside of triggers) is dumb
If they do go with this concept I expect them to double down on it and offer alternatives for physical controls (pro controllers support) as they have done before
Are the measurements in this pic legit? I would be pretty damn happy if this thing is basically a little wider than the U Pro controller and they add handles.
I have a Vita, haven't turned it on in a year or so, but I remember it being pretty comfortable. Way more comfortable than the 3DS. If it had handles it would have been even better. #TeamHandlesPlease
Edit: But! I suppose a reason to not have handles is so it can function as a WiiMote as well, which would be cool. So #TeamOptionalHandlesAttachement please. As if I needed anymore Nintendo plastic lying around...

When did that Update #4 image appear? I couldn't find it in the thread

Sorry, but this doesn't work, because, every car is the same genre, but a motorcycle is driven completely different, as well as a bike.
And there you have your customized input, always the one, which is the most practical in that style of transportation.
Have you used a Steam Controller / Xbox Elite? Grip buttons are really natural.
I hope NX is matte and not glossy.
This thing could theoretically snap into a carrier similar to the Circle pad pro, but that adds a Dpad and buttons beneath the analog sticks on both sides... You could then buy the button layout you prefer(Gamecube).
Software buttons don't make sense if you want play pc/ps4/xbox games.
But what if Nintendo Nintendo wants to offer IOS game experiences? After all they are a mainstream / kid company after all.
Nothing.Okay. Just woke up, what'd I miss?
Who wants to fill me in quickly before I leave for work?
This is essentially a hybrid console though. I'm not saying it's impossible, or that it wouldn't be cool, but Nintendo has previously debunked making a hybrid so I think it's less likely.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot
Okay. Just woke up, what'd I miss?

Not much:
Game Informer eic stated "rumors are no face buttons"
Treehouse employee retweeted thread, then quickly deleted the tweet
John Harker wrote 'I can confirm I cannot confirm or deny anything out of respect.
And 20 000 attempts at meme creation.
I dread the day I open this thread and this gets confirmed to be real. When the pictures were first leaked, I was so damn certain that this was all a big joke. I mean just look at that thing!
Now, I'm just really, really hoping that it's a fake. I really hate the design: the strange shape, the lack of face buttons, the screen that swallows up the whole controller. It looks so unwieldy.
And is this controller supposed to be the new handheld as well? Please noo, Nintendo.
Could you describe this direction? Because i see the following things as the current directions (note the plural):Well I'm obviously assuming it's real, and if it is I don't think I'm jumping to conclusions at all with the direction Nintendo is going in.
Well, same way for the other side, some random redditor could claim to be a dev and saying NX is about the level of an iPhone calculator, there would be people in here that actually take this as a given fact. Hyperbole goes both ways. The crazy thing to me is that some people in here are actually defending it. If they defend this I'm convinced they'll defend anything.
Nintendo could mold a controller out of bear poop and Nintendo fans would still say it's a great idea.
Then they are well and truly lost to the abyss. From whence they will not return.
More like NeoGAF always forgets what Nintendo actually is. And I'm on #TEAMFENCE, if people wants a team.
No, each vehicle is a platform, not a genre, in my example.

Thank you for all your work. And finally someone who uses 21:9 screenshots.

Meh. The sticks in the middle of the screen like that don't make any sense. They give us extra screen only to be covered by our thumbs? Nintendo don't do silly stuff like that. Also if the sticks are where they are, isn't it better to just have those tiny ones the N3DS got?
This is just ergonomically wrong. A prototype, maybe. A dev kit, possible. But a finished product this is not.
