Batman v. Superman RT Thread: like standing ovations in rain

I don't understand how DC could live in a post Iron Man 2, Spiderman 3, and AMS2 world and still try to cram a bunch of universe building into one movie. It never works. You can't go from Iron Man 1 to Civil War to Avengers

You can absolutely start with something like JL and hit the ground running, but your script has to be very tight and you have to very specific about introducing your characters. You don't need to focus on all your characters at once either.

It can work, but WB just has no idea how to connect these characters and movies, and they give the task to a man more interested in painting cool frames and assembling cool montages than developing characters.

watching the screen junkies review now. They mentioned that that spoilery trailer totally showed everything. People kept saying that no way that was possible, there it is.

I don't think it's a spoiler for me to say 95% of the "good" stuff is shown in the trailer, I totally agree with that.

I watched the non-spoilery bit of Greg Miller's review and he said there were three big things that surprised him. Hopefully there's still a few bits that are unexpected.

Forgive my ignorance: where did the idea of "let's rush to the JL movie and use BvS to set it up" come from? Is that someone at WB or Snyder?

That idea came from Marvel. I've heard lots of people mention how DC has tried to do this as 'Hubris' but it feels more like desperation.

Nolan Batman is done and they need to re-boot it again to make it connected.
Green Lantern poisoned the well so that can't be part of the connected universe.

MOS might have started as a connected movie, maybe not but it IS the launching pad now.

WB/DC wanted to make the kind of billions that Disney and Marvel are making and they were already behind and would have gotten more behind if they spent the next 3-4 years doing lots of solo movies. They felt they were going to miss the train, so they just tried to jump on it ASAP.

Or as my friend said - "Who needs a match? Just tell everyone Pat Patterson is the first ever IC champ and move on!"

For every overstuffed movie that fails to achieve its goals, there's a Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, and (hopefully) Suicide Squad.

Knew it, this and the Lex casting had me questioning things from the get go..

It works all the time.

You're acting like an ensemble cast is a foreign notion rife with peril and uncertainty.
Seriously.

The problem with Sony's Spider-Man universe building isn't that you can't do it in two movies. The problem is that the movies suck and the "universe building" is just forced marketing for future movies.

I know hindsight and all that but given Mavel had conveniently established huge market for ensemble superhero movies all DC actually had to do was sort out core actors and go straight to a full Justice League film. Most characters are broadly known in public sphere and the idea you need an origin for all characters is nonsense.

They should have simply jumped in with JL fully formed and gone from there. The opening sequence would have been a mostly standalone set piece that features all the core heroes. Then off they go.

Making a terrible film with Batman and Superman that features little more (WW aside) than useless cameos wasn't the smartest way to go.

Mind you I was of the opinion going with Snyder was a fuck up from the start so I guess I've never "been on side" with WB's approach here.
