Eurogamer: Independently confirms source that the PS4.5 is real, referred as PS 4K

Mmmmmm smells like an avatar bet

I never make bets! Haha while I'm usually confident in my rather bold proclamations Im wrong plenty of the time. Life is crazy volatile and hard to actually predict :-)

You got me. We'll see.

Hey I may be wrong lol we'll see. Exciting times ahead and I really dont think it will be long until the specs come out considering Eurogamer themselves said they are actively looking into it

Same specs as the PS4 but with 2X the Compute Units

knowing that 14nm is 1/2 the size of 28nm this will fit in where the old PS4 GPU was at

So from what I was told the unit is indeed a slim. Devs are on board and OK with it. Haven't heard if ps4.0 will see a slim version because I didn't ask. Was also told to nit purchase a ps4.0 and just wait.

My guess is this thing is coming out this year. Should have specs soon. The only problem I see is how do dev teams optimize for this new unit when their primary console will be 4.0?!?

One dev told me he producer told me he doesn't agree with this decision as it is just turning the console into a pc. Who knows. I will update later.
Any truth to this one?

Now this we know isnt true. Every source including those of you that are going with Zhuge has said that there is a power boost. Also Sony wouldn't be briefing devs at GDC about USB ports and 4k media

Well, if you look at any of my other posts, I was open to more processing power to "boost" game performance. I am not saying that will be included or not. However, my main point I am trying to make is this will simply be the Slim refresh, with a few new features. Maybe more processing is included in that, but will simply replace the standard PS4, it is nothing more than a slim refresh, with some added features or bonuses. This is not some "new" PlayStation that is going to fragment the userbase as has been brought up.

Nearly every console has had a slim version released. This will be the PS4s slim version release, but it may have more than your standard die shrink and smaller console footprint.

Ahhh ok I can see that POV and mostly agree with it. I think this will be its "slim" with 4k media support and a nice GPU boost but nothing crazy. Basically I'm guessing 3TF GPU or less because I'm betting they dont want to up the power draw

This doesn't make sense, if it's just a slim which has been done before then

1. Why wait?
2. Why is it closer to a PC?
3. Why do devs need to be ok with it?

Would this PS4 also upscale games to 4K? TVs do a pretty good job but I bet the PS4 can do a better job with actual polygonal graphics and ailiasing.

The Last of Us 2 - exclusively on PS4K

The meltdowns tho

tumblr_m6woy96flf1qiqqgt.gif

its a funny thought but it would never happen... there's zero reason to do this and all the people freaking out about fracturing the userbase are basically just doing a full chicken little routine at this point.

TLOU2 not on ps3 would already be a jump to next gen, theres zero chance they wouldn't release it for ps4. At best ps4.5 would have some extra perks maybe some slight graphic tweaks, faster load times, maybe a slight boost from 30fps to 40fps.

They aren't going to sell a 699 dollar PC here they already showed it didn't work with ps3. Maybe just maybe a 499 ps4.5....

Pretty much. The question is how improved is the processor? Every source has said there is a power increase. I'm guessing a nice little bump but nothing crazy

They could just increase the gpu clock speed to 1000mhz. Thus 2.3 TFlop GPU, give 4k bluray playback (thus hdmi 2.0). Also hopefully b/g/n/ac WiFi and the ability to fit 15mm height 2.5" Sata hdd. Come on, do it Sony!!!

What resource does anti-aliasing uses? Mad AA + an upscale to 4K would look pretty good.

As long as there isn't a PS4K exclusive game, I'm ok with it. Hopefully it will push the price of the PS4 down.

I don't care about what sound like fairly minor speculated upgrades (and I don't care about VR). BUT, if this one has 5ghz wireless capability, I'll be annoyed that I bought a c-chassis last month with the gimped piece of shit 2.4 ghz wireless card, which doesn't even seem to be a great performer as far as 2.4 ghz wireless goes.

So basically, I do not have to upgrade.

who ever stated you would? they aren't just going to dump the ps4, one of their best consoles ever. to suggest this is ridiculous.

if they do make a ps4.5 it will be for enthusiasts or people who have to buy everything (so basically every person here and the more upset some users are the more I am sure they are going to buy it).

If there were to be exclusive games it'd probably be on the PSVR end as many higher end games will struggle to meet the requirements needed on the current console.

I'm going with it having a 3.68 tflops GPU from moving to 14nm from 28nm & fitting 36CUs where it used to be 18 CUs.

I'm already thinking of how to dump my ps4 if the new hardware will run games better and not offer ambassador programs for the early adopters. Switching to PC and Nintendo combination if this is the route they're taking.

1. Wait for what?
2. One person said "if sony/ ms is going to go forward with small incremental hardware revisions then they might as well put their games on pc."
3. When games are made they will have to add extra support towards the 4.5 version which I don't see any dev wanting to be since they will focus their attention on the lead platform being either ps4 or xbone. One way I can see a work around is having the pc version be the lead platform for all games.

That doesn't change it that devs will have multiple hardware specs to address and that the current owners are getting something different. Gb color did this. Failed.

Because it's so hard for devs to code for an I5 AND an I7! omg! How do they even manage to get games that work on both 680 and 980 TI's. Miracle magical shit I tell you!

It fractured the heart of early adopters, that's for sure.

haha I was salty about Microsoft dropping Kinect after I paid 500$ on day one for that brick. I got over it.

1. Why wait to purchase if it is exactly the same but slim?
2. A slim wouldn't be incremental unless they've thrown a new APU in it?
3. A slim shouldn't need extra support unless the hardware has greatly changed?

If the PS4.5 has roughly 'double' the performance of the PS4, then you're literally talking about running games at 30/60fps.

Given that most modern titles are designed & tested to run at 60+fps on PC, it's unclear why a developer would have a particularly hard time with that?

If the performance is under double, it's obviously a problem... Whereas if performance is much over double, then developers could turn on more PC options if they really want to (but that would require more testing etc).

Or, they could even ship at 60fps, and on the PS4.5 show the full list of PC graphics options.

1. Well we don't know the specs just know it will be in slim form. My guess is 4.0 will also see a slim model.
2. I completely agree with this but again we got nothing on specs.
3. Added effects, better lighting better textures. That all takes time. The concern is will devs just make the same game for 4.0 & 4.5 or will they put in the extra work on 4.5?

That's not how computers work...

If they switch to iterative consoles I don't really get why people would be mad. If you want a 6 year cycle like normal just wait 3 years for the next iteration. I doubt Sony expects anyone but enthusiasts to replace their 4.0 model, they just expect new purchasers and enthusiasts to get the "4.1" model. Most people who have the 4.0 model would probably wait until the 4.2 or even 4.3 iteration to get a new piece of hardware. Plus you get the benefits of lengthy backwards compatibility and forward compatibility (hell if your a dev making a low spec game you could target 4.0 for a very long time). Sounds pretty good to me, but who knows what this will actually be.

Yep, at the minimum just a Slim with 4k media abilities. But I hope so much they do add some more horsepower under the hood that could help games perform better. The rumors do point that way. So you buy a game, it runs one way on PS4 Standard, but could run with a better framerate and/or with increased graphical effects on PS4k. That would be ideal.

Maybe the SDK will be updated to make development for the PS4k and Standard PS4 simple. So when a game goes in the PS4K, it will trigger a few boosts to the games performance instantly. Of course, adding extra effects and stuff would be more work on developers, but simple framerate improvements would be fantastic.

And how would games use it ?

They cannot cut out "old" PS4´s with new games.

Games must run on both PS4 and PS4K

So devs would have to make 2 different versions of the game. Maybe 2 sets of textures. Different Level auf Antialiasing and so on.

Well ... why not :D

Don't really understand the purpose of this. They might as well make this PS 4.5 something akin to a PC with modular, upgradeable hardware if they are going to fragment the market.

You do realise there is a massive difference between the two though right?

Said it before, I'll say it again - I don't like this one bit. Makes me extremely reluctant to purchase a console at launch ever again if there's bound to be a superior iteration of it released in two/three years time.

PS4k sounds like a glorified PS4 Slim. 4k media capabilities, maybe include and have more HDMI/USB ports, consider VR gaming by incorperating the VR box inside, maybe an HDMI in port, a better HDD maybe. But ultimately running games better is the least likely.
