Dark Souls III [Import OT] Kindle the fire, one last time

For what it's worth, it feels very linear to me. It's not like Dark Souls 1, where you can go to Blighttown or Valley of Drakes early on - there are some sidepaths and stuff, but it doesn't look like you can just run into high level areas early on in this one :(

Also, disconnecting the hub from the rest of the game, why was that a smart idea? I really don't like that...

Is it more or less linear than Bloodborne? Bloodborne was open enough for me.

Whoa, that's disappointing to read. I loved the one map in DS1, and the puzzle-like exploration. Why is that huge monster there? How do I activate this door? What's on the other side of this? Hey, this connects to that!

It was one of the best feelings of adventuring. No other Souls game was like it at that scale. Are you maybe just very early on in the game, or is there really a separate HUB world and a linear progression?

What stat do I level to prevent fat roll? I want to equip better armour but it's too heavy.

vitality (4th down, icon of a full body)

keep your equip load below 70% to prevent fat rolls. you can see that in the top right of the stats in the equip screen

quoting myself from earlier because end of page curse:

So for those of you who've played quite far into the game, without spoiling anything, how consistent is the world design? I don't necessarily mean everything being interconnected - Bloodborne's later areas were disconnected from the main world completely, but the world still felt coherent because the story justified it, unlike DS2 where it just felt like a series of levels connected by corridors.

Also, how's the bonfire placement? Something that bugged me about Bloodborne is the occasional really cool shortcut that often went completely wasted because lamp warping rendered it redundant (like the door from Yahar'gul to Old Yharnam). Are the shortcuts genuinely useful?

Pretty similar. "Buy this key to go to this area early" kind of stuff. I mean that's why Dark Souls 1 will never be truly topped, but it's still really fun so far!

Eh doesnt really matter to me a road block is a road block if its a door or a difficult enemy a few 100 yards in.

After PS, not before.

Haha Thanks. What an odd choice, considering the gap in difficulty.

quoting myself from earlier because end of page curse:

Every area is Forbidden Woods scale, tons of secrets, enemy/boss design is top notch, difficulty ramps up midway through the game with fairly easy early content.

It feels pretty linear, but there are often entire areas hidden in very obscure ways, Ash Lake-style.

This feels like a game that could last us years, hopefully they don't release anything new next year.

Yeah, I'm not very far in so I can't say for sure, but so far the game has felt a lot like Bloodborne to me.

Bah. If I can list off why I like DS1 better than BB:

-Better world design (connectivity and sense of mystery to finding inaccessible areas)
-Better NPCs (Bloodborne didn't even have NPCs for trade, just those "messengers")
-Better discovery (Too few items in Bloodborne made discovery less encouraging)

Anyone else felt the same?

I hope I'm not just tired of the series, but having skipped DS2, I am pretty excited to play something like DS1 again.

Very disappointed about the world design. Dark Souls 1 seems like it won't be topped in that case, and I am actually very surprised that they would move away from something so very special.

Yes.
However, the slick animations from Bloodborne have grown on me. Makes going back to DS1 hard. It kind of feels clunky by compare.

I didn't dislike Dark Souls 2...
Actually I STOPPED playing Bloodborne to play DS2 Scholar of the First Sin because Bloodborne's lack of weapon diversity and playstyle options turned me off.

I didn't return to Bloodborne until long after DS2...
I do think DS2 is a worthwhile game to play. Especially the Scholar of the First Sin version which fixed a number of issues with the base game.

That's fair, BB is good for other reasons. I don't think we'll ever see a game like Dark Souls again. This fixes some of your issues though (everything except stuff like master key shortcuts) and it's still super fun and good unlike DS2. I'm assuming there's not stuff like literally everything in Lost Izalith too, so the improved focus helps.

Really trying to not read spoilers so Im being careful.

Whats the general impression? Good? God tier? Step down from Bloodborne? Step up?

I was thinking a lot about this last night. I was trying to come up with a list of criticisms, but then I came to a realization. "Who am I to criticize a game I just played for 12 hours straight?!"

Is there a dash or a roll in this one? I've gotten very used to bloodborne's dashes and general speed. Is it possible to replicate that style in dks3?

If I recall correctly... The knife has a "quick step" (AKA Bloodborne dash).
Not sure if it replaces your roll button or if it's a weapon art that uses mana though...
You're not going to get any kind of Bloodborne like reach with it though...

there are
dagger style weapons (and maybe others too) that have a dash art that resembles bloodborne

I can't find the boss in (location spoiler)
Irithyll
. Should I go to
Profane Capital and return here later or try to find the boss now. I can see the fog gate in Irithyll byt I can't figure out how to get there.

From what I remember, the path to the boss is in the watery area with the spider ladies. One of a few different tunnels in that area gets you where you need to go.

I cannot find the damn
Necromancers in this area.. Skeletons keep getting up so I assume there are necros
..Might just explore other areas and hope for a divine stone or some sort of holy dmg weapon.

Ohhhhh boy I just found
Lost Izalith/Demon Ruins
, complete with corpses of
Capra/Taurus Demons
and the
floating fire breathing ball demon things
.

Edit: Super complete with
super glowy lava
. Brilliant!

Hmm ok thanks, it's gonna be tough going back to a slower game after BB. Blades of mercy suited the type of play style I always try and build for in these games. BB was the first souls game that I didn't feel punished in for going with a fast build.

Yea, certain daggers (the starting one for instance) have the ability to Bloodborne dash but it uses weapon art mana and you dodge with L2. It felt really uncomfortable to me so I ended up dropping it.

There's a ring later in the game that gives your roll more iframes though and that makes it feel a bit better for someone playing without a shield, to me at least.

Thanks all for the impressions. I dont think Ill preorder cuz $60 is still a lot, but I dont think Ill be able to stop myself from picking it up if I see it in stores.

This is all very good to hear! Gonna back out of the thread now, discovering the world for myself is one of my favourite things about these games, so it's good to know that aspect is up to par this time around!

I think I'm like 5 bosses in and it's been incredibly easy. I've died more to normal enemies than any of the bosses. Easy Souls 3: Prepare to Laugh Edition better start getting more challenging. The world and environments have been for the most part pretty great though.

Please tell me where that NPC is,
hard to explain exactly where but he's basically right before the
Crystal Sage
boss, the path to get to him is a bit hidden.

um, I bought the 20k key but it doesn't open the door I thought it would open, the one where the lady who drops the uchigatana is.

so where do I use this tower key?
anyone?

I think I should remove this Dark Sigils curse before it gets to 99, not sure what happens if it does though.

PSA there's an equip load lowering ring that you can get
for a boss soul from the boss soul trading guy at firelink. not sure which soul it was.

Is there anything to do in Cathedral after beating the Deacons? I can see a place I should be able to get to on the far side of the central room, but I can't find out how to raise the gate so I can walk across to there. I haven't figured out anything else there after beating the Deacons, and I explored pretty thoroughly.

Bump. anyone?

I am starting to think maybe the staggered release date will be a good thing for those in the US. Hopefully some patches during the wait will improve things. It is not horrible but I am bit bitter after losing 14,000 souls when the game crashed to the main menu and I couldn't find my souls anywhere.

I always play DS1 is the same order, the..."correct" order, Im never adventurous with these games, they are hard enough as it is.

Any word on soft caps yet?
