Dark Souls III [Import OT] Kindle the fire, one last time

the homages to DaS in this have been really great...like I'm enjoying the hell out of it even if I have some level design/world qualms but it definitely feels more of a true sequel as far as lore/atmosphere/gameplay than DS2 ever did.

That's the impression I am getting too. Dark Souls 2 felt only a sequel by name and returning items, other than that... it felt like they could have made Ds2 a new IP and I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

Got this on Xbox One, game feels different than in the past -- faster, a little lighter. And you can definitely see Bloodborne's influence already, which to me is an awesome thing.

So crazy playing a huge game without any reviews, impressions, etc. Looking forward to the complete install so I can play past the first area ;)

I'm playing a Knight and I see some stat differences. Am I to assume that endurance is still my first priority as a melee character? Followed by vigor, strength, vitality, etc?

Yup. Only the name and some items were the same. It didn't look, play or sound the same at all. I actually thought it was a Ninja Gaiden game at first

You know what I mean. Like how Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are different, that's the type of dissonance I felt between Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2.

(early-ish area spoiler) I unlocked a big door by
putting out three fires in the swamp area
but I have no idea where it is. These areas are huge and winding.

Backtracked and saw that I totally missed a boss. I thought it was strange I played so long without fighting another one. I really enjoyed it (
Cursed Great tree
). Souls games don't often do the mechanic of
a boss having only some vulnerable spots
, and they're not always great, but I think this was one of the best attempts at that in the series. It was a really cool early boss and
the floor breaking and moving the fight below
was a nice touch, even if that's a pretty common type of thing to happen in boss fights in other games.

I like optional bosses, but I'm kind of surprised more required bosses haven't been in my face so far. I'm still early though.

Just got my copy in the mail. Unfortunately, I have a terrible drinking party tonight. In Japan they are secretly mandatory. So, I don't get to play it until MUCH later. Profound sadness...

If you followed the fires to the bonfire you can not miss it.

So ashen flasks. Are they for the blue meter on the hud and your weapon arts?

I've just been allocating everything to normal estus. I'm switching between Uchi and broadsword at the moment.

I just saw a big monster has a face that looks like this guy in
prison
area

really creepy

Actually for me Dark Souls felt much closer to Demon's Souls than to Dark Souls 2. And Dark Souls 3 feels closer (to me at least) to both Demon's and the first Dark Souls. But I personally don't see how people can call it a hyperbole.. there's a huge shift in tone and approach between the first two Dark Souls games. Dark Souls 2 felt more mechanically focused and less interested in delivering the tighter, more mature experience Demon Souls and Dark Souls offered.
It's sort of the difference between Alien and Aliens.. or LotR and The Hobbit (both are quite poor examples, but it's 8 AM and I haven't slept in more than 24 hours so don't think I'll manage to come up with anything better at this time).

I think alien>aliens is a good analogy.
Aliens is not better than Alien

Oh please. People are playing the international edition on PS4 just fine without this so called Day 1 patch. This is quintessential PR speak.

Also fuck the swamp boss.

nononononono...Motherfucker!

Blackout while playing, came back and my save file is gone..

Everything else is fine, save data is set to auto upload, but no DS3 data on cloud...

6 bosses down...FUCK!

Bamco, stop embarassing yourselves. You fucked up, that's it.

Find Oceiros if you haven't already. The door behind him opens up a new path. At the end is a chest. The wall behind that chest is illusory and gets you to the Untended Graves.

Also, as an added bonus (you don't have to look at this one if you don't want to be that spoiled),
the emote found on a knight also in that room gets you access to the other bonus area.

Spoil me up, dude. In the second, secret
firelink shrine, what should i do. Got the eyes behind the illusory wall and the emote.

Is there a "monumental" place I should be using this gesture?

Hey guys, I think I missed a cutscene.

I killed
my 3rd lord of cinder (Yhorm the giant)
, and I left to talk to my room mate. When I came back (like 30s-1min later) I saw a loading screen and found myself in a different place.

Could anyone point me to a video of the said cutscene? I'm not sure I want to wade through youtube myself considering I'm not sure what I should look for and because of how many spoilers must be out there.

Thanks!

Where do I go from Firelink shrine?

I killed the katana guy but that door doesn't open from that side and I can't find anywhere else.

Large Sword of Astra (or that's how google translate calls it, anyway) I predict will be considered one of the better swords

the lenght is incredible and the moveset is as well

I just really don't enjoy being kicked off ledges.

What area specifically are you talking about; Tomb of the Giants?

I also feel this way.

I kind of don't (but kind of do!). Will be playing the best version with my first playthrough at least.

Yup. Only the name and some items were the same. It didn't look, play or sound the same at all. I actually thought it was a Ninja Gaiden game at first

I know right? It was so mechanically different that them putting "Souls" in the title made very little sense to me. I think Lords of the Fallen was closer to a true Dark Souls sequel than that game.

Why are the NA/EU servers not functional then? It's just PR speak, right?

Because they are simply offline? Makes sense that the servers wouldn't be online 2 weeks before official release.

The message sounds like damage control, I imagine a decent amount of people are simply buying the game though the JPN store now.
