Dark Souls III [Import OT] Kindle the fire, one last time

Okay, I just watched a Let's Play for about 3 hours (real version, not beta). I don't like what I'm seeing. Imo this game is way too linear, just like Bloodborne. It's like you go from A>B>C>D

There seems no other way. Dark Souls 1 was fantastic, Dark Souls 2 was okay but it still has more open "gameplay" (if you know hat I mean). Even Demon's Souls seems more open (linear design but you can approach the level in any order).
Don't get me wrong...it looks good...it just doesn't look like a good Souls game. It's Bloodborne 2.0

Yes, there are shortcuts but only within the same level. I mean... there's already a
teleport
after the first level, what the fuck?

I don't know. It looks like a sequel to Bloodborne (to me) ...not really interested to be honest.
It couldn't be farther away from Bloodborne. This is a Dark Souls game through and through

The music in this game is good but the Firelink Shrine music is lacking compared to the Firelink Shrine music in DK1 and it doesn't match up to the Majula music either.

Without realizing it, I managed to go from A>B>C>E>D. I was borderline underleveled for "E" but I still managed to reach the boss. It was only after that that I realized "D" existed, so I was a tad overpowered for "D", so I enjoyed tearing up the entire area. It is not linear.

Just beat the
Farron Keep Boss
.

I'm so in love with all of this. The areas are so massive. The paths are so clever. The
Grand Cathedral
may be Miyazaki and his crews' crowning achievement level-design wise.

The enemies force you to change your approach often. You get punished a lot of the time when you
fish for backstabs
.

I just don't want this game to end. I don't want any of this to end. We're living an era of one of the greatest design teams ever, while they're in their absolute prime. Just soaking in this moment is so, so great.

I'll be streaming again tonight if anyone wants to check it out, though I'm going to be doing a lot of exploring in areas I've already been in for a few hours. I have all my playthrough on VoD as well. primeau31 on twitch.

The game opens up tremendously after the first three bosses.

Play the bloody game before you judge it.

Utterly ridiculous

Jesus Christ this shits so annoying. Stop it.
Stop. it
You haven't even played the game, you're watching it and you've barely seen anything from the game. There are numerous people in this thread alone saying the exact opposite and the only people who feel how you feel haven't played the game. Give it a chance before you start shitting all over it.

No, I haven't played the game because I have to wait another three weeks. So my opionion is based on videos. I'm sorry that I don't have a Xbox One or speek japanese. Still, it doesn't look that amazing (imo). GAF hype is strong....GAF hype was strong at Dark Souls 2 release, too.

It's far from linear even early on. Multiple routes through levels. For me it's the perfect blend of demons and dark with a splash of bloodborne. Game is immense. Sod watching streams play the game and then judge.

1. If you base your entire opinion of the game on how many shortcuts there are between different areas you're kind of weird. :P The areas connect in really cool ways, they're just not always shortcuts (it's very much a consistent world like DS1 where you everything you see in in the distance is a place you will go to).

2. It's only linear for the first couple of hours and opens up after that, so watching three hours of the start is not going to be helpful for making that judgement. Might even open up earlier since I've went in completely blind and only go on my own experience here. I've already done two areas in the "wrong" order based on difficulty and I'm only 6 bosses in, there's probably a lot more I've missed.

There's hype for a reason. Basically any souls game dumps all over other games from a great height imo.

The game seems to open up noticeably after the third boss FWIW.

I love Dark Souls 2 still.

As someone who has played the game almost 30 hours, you just sound stupid.

Then you can do what plenty of others here are doing and read the impressions of others who have played and finished the game because your complaints have been addressed numerous times. It's pretty irritating to have people come into the thread and talk about how awful the game is based on two areas.

So are there any good builds floating aroud right now?
You could take my build and do the OPPOSITE. Seriously, I've put hundreds of hours in all the games you'd think I could execute a build but nope, just throwing shit at the wall.

Edit: I'm a Dex, Faith, Pyro, fire katana character... Basically a glass cannon type build which works great for bosses but not so great for mobs.

What weapons are people rocking?

I was Uchi but then I used a boss soul for the
hollow great sword and I'm loving that so far.

FUCK! Killed the older maiden in Firelink Shrine. I had the Wolnir Holy Sword equipped and I hit the wrong button. I saw the motion and was like... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Damn it :(

Edit: She's back and gave me some shit about killing her.

Oh shit, found the boss:

Abyss watchers are scary as hell. Didn't help i was holding 37k souls at the time. Homeward Boned out to spend so i can take these guys on without the panic or inevitable aneurysm when i get killed on the run back.

It seems real linear at first ,but the game really opens up about after three zones or so. They can be hard to find though. I decided to skip a tough boss and explore and found two new zones.

I also think the game is general harder. Mobs seem faster and more aggressive and there are areas with tons of mobs that you have to pull one by one. There is also ambushes by multiple mobs.

I think 40 is the soft cap for Dex. Adding to it doesn't improve my Uchigatana damage.

Right now faith build seems really trash, as much as I want it not to be.

Unless there's some big cache of awesome miracles somewhere that no one has found yet, which there very well could be.

As someone who has played the game almost 30 hours, you just sound stupid.

24 hours in myself and yeah, from my experience playing the game (which is infinitely superior to that poster's "experience" of watching the first 3 hours) the game is very well designed and there are tons of shortcuts.

There are fewer loop-arounds to earlier areas since you traverse bigger distances, but it's not linear. Areas themselves are more non-linear than any other game in the series; they offer more possible paths and shortcuts. After you go
down from the wall
the rest of the game expands like a tree. You have branching paths that will bring you to the different compulsory and optional areas.

Then you can do what plenty of others here are doing and read the impressions of others who have played and finished the game because your complaints have been addressed numerous times. You don't even need to understand Japanese to play the game anyway. I don't understand a word of Japanese and I'm at what I think is the final boss... I didn't even use the translation resources.

anyone still following the siegward questline? i'm stumped
so he's locked up in a cell in the tower of latria type place, i have the jailer keys but i cannot for the life of me find the door to his cell, i can talk to him through the window but that's it, i must have spent 90 minutes going through this area

Anyone know a solid place besides g2a or playasia to get yen cards? I can't wait any longer. I must play this now. PSN for life baby.

I've never said it looks awful. Actually I said it looks pretty good.

It just looks as linear as Bloodborne (from the first three hours). But I don't have the chance to play it right now, so....it's just my first impression.

Still my starting twin blades but I've found an icy sword that looks pretty appealing.

The silver eagle kite shield that has 100% physical block and has a special skill that lets you use the weapon skill with it out has been secret MVP though.

I guess this may be useful for some people:

The broadsword goes to A scaling in strength at the +8 level if you infuse it with "heavy". So, you can level STR to 40, get access to all those cool clubs and heavy shields, but still have a super nice "fast weapon" that takes advantage of your stat investment.

Nice to know. I'm rocking a Fire Uchigatana +2 at the moment, but I think the Broadsword might come in handy as well.

You're not the only one, which is why I and others are a bit irritated. Sorry if I'm coming off as ultra aggressive. But c'mon.

Wait
4? There is Link the Fire, End of the Fire and Usurpation of the Fire, what is the 4th one?

From what I've heard, it's supposedly
a variant of the end of the fire ending where instead of working with the maiden to snuff out the fire, you bully her and do it yourself.

You're judging the whole game from the first 3 hours, you just saw a small part of the game and extrapolating it to it's whole.

For your info, you're wrong, game opens up after the first 3 hours and seemingly has several optional areas.

So, whats the general feedback so far? Especially in relation to prior games? Dark souls is my GOAT

Better than all the others imo. The combat system is the most refined, the level design is excellent, there's a great variety of interesting enemies and bosses, and it's the most challenging. Can't say anything about the story though, it's not something I really care about in those games.

Oh fuck yes... Getting me super hyped now! My last day of classes is the 12th too, perfect way to celebrate ;)

Alright, so I just defeated A
ldrich and now I think the only path left open for me is the Dancer - but that guy is seriously busting my balls... I died like 10 times already trying to take him down. Is there any other path that opens up after Aldritch?
.

I think I just got to the endgame stretch and by god this game is good and fucking HARD. The bosses so far have been easy to average in terms of difficulty with only one fight that really gave me palpitations (I've been solo'ing all the bosses), but some gimmick bosses aside I like the boss fights (even the gimmicky ones, they have flash at least and they're not annoying like Bed of Chaos/Dragon God), they strike a right balance. It's ironically the regular enemies that are the fuckers in this game. It's just downright nasty on occasion, the things they'll throw at you.

Also there are so many weapons, not crazy Dark Souls 2 levels, but there are a lot.

My biggest criticism so far is that they've been so incredibly stingy with Titanite Scales that I just straight up can't use boss weapons because I can't upgrade them. I've only invested materials in one of them and it's only +3, and it does far less damage than my +7/8 (I forget) zweihander (it's also an ultra greatsword). There are so many cool boss weapons but I guess they're for NG+? Or maybe late late late game? Either way it's super disappointing. I hope it's something they'll address in a patch.

I lost two myself around then.
Hawkwood gave me a few items and then disappeared. I haven't come across him again but his questline felt pretty final, since you took care of the leaders of his former group. Irina disappeared too, I found her just outside of the tutorial boss area with Eygon. Probably because I forced dark stuff on her.
ah, that's where she went. I still can't find all the others though. Yuria, the thief, and the ones you can summon.

it's hilarious that the only one not leaving the firelink shrine is
Patches.
such a friend

anyway, I've read that you find
Siegward of Catarina
in a well after the first encounter ends, any idea on where he is exactly?

I don't know. It looks like a sequel to Bloodborne (to me) ...not really interested to be honest.

It plays nothing like Bloodborne to be honest. The early game is linear in that you do areas A, B, C... but then it opens up. Watching videos cannot give you an idea of how this game plays. The area I'm in is unbelievably large and internally complex to a degree we've never seen before.

You'll find a lot of demon titanite soon. I have close to 30 of them.

Top Bottom
