Dark Souls III [Import OT] Kindle the fire, one last time

For those who are playing the JP PS4 version, make sure to go offline in the network settings of your PS4 to avoid bad frame rate glitch while playing the game offline.

Yep. It was REALLY obvious as you are playing too.

I only played the PS4 version, but I was watching Peeve's stream simultaneously and we were almost in lock-step progress-wise, so I could see damage bosses were doing to him only shortly after fighting them myself, and the difference is SEVERE. He was able to take so many more hits, it made the hardest boss I've fought so far (P.S.) a complete joke.

Can anyone tell me if the game has areas that don't look similar to Bloodborne? So far, everything I've seen the game looks very much like Bloodborne. The other Dark Souls games had so many varied areas, and great use of color. All I see in the early footage is desaturated and reused assets(which is fine if the doll them up to look different).

SMH, starting to get real tired of people asking this same question every page.

Yes, the first few areas (which are all Bamco are technically letting everyone see for now) are less interconnected than DS1. It's more like bloodborne for the first 3rd of the game or so, then it openss up. However you can warp between bonfires at the start so while there's shortcuts and hidden areas, it's a lot easier to get around.

There's plenty of color, and tons of new assets, don't worry.

To be fair the similar color pallette and lighting solution (probably an engine thing) makes it look more similar to Bloodborne in screenshot and video form that it actually feels, in my experience. I only once felt like "this reminds me of Bloodborne", and it was an early game area that reminded me of Hemwick. Outside of that, it's very much Dark Souls 1, though I feel the actual design of the level layouts and the game progression is more Bloodborne-esque, though it's very open and expansive throughout, like Bloodborne's early game moreso than the late game.

One more hidden area question:

Is there a boss somewhere in the second firelink shrine? I killed Gundyr of course, is there something I'm missing?

Funny, I like DS more than Bloodborne, not necessarily in setting but in terms of game pacing and weapon / armor variety.

It all depends on what you're looking for in your Souls game.

I don't really look for anything specifically as long as it's good, I like both "styles." Bloodborne won me over because I preferred the faster-paced gameplay, art direction and horror tone.

Dark Souls III is better in everything besides uniqueness of locations and maybe lore.
Gameplay-wise is a lot better.
Bosses-wise they're on par.

Sweet, sounds fantastic.

For PS4 import players -- how would you rate the difficulty of the game, in comparison to other Souls games so far?

I'm personally playing the X1 version, so I'd like to hear what people think about the difficulty from the "patched" experience.

I have noticed that Bonfires are more plentiful, about 10 hours in.

How do you get to this place you speak of?

Bosses are average, start very easy but get harder, to a good challenge level I feel. Regular enemies can be the real fuckers. Moreso than in most Souls games, a moment of weakness can really fuck you over, especially against multiple enemies. I've had damn rats kill me because for some reason poise means NOTHING to them, lol.

Also what is the second option when talking to the Firekeeper? It wants me to spend hella Souls, but what does it do? Respec?

Firs half is o par with the other games, the second half is harder than anything in the other base games.

True, but similar engine / color scheme != bloodborne, and it bugs me when people are asking Dark Souls to play like it. I like there being a difference.

If anything, the level design seems kind of like demon's souls to me - large expansive areas, not necessarily interconnected but big enough to explore on their own and to have a lot of shortcuts throughout.

I don't really look for anything specifically as long as it's good, I like both "styles." Bloodborne won me over because I preferred the faster-paced gameplay, art direction and horror tone.

Yeah, DSIII is a bit slower paced and you probably aren't going to get the same tone, but there's some art influences and mechanics changes that take from bloodborne.

I kinda want to get the Xbone version more now due to the lowered difficulty. I'm not generally a very good Souls player, so I could do my first run on Kiddie Mode with weakened enemies and then the second playthrough on PC on The Real Dark Souls Starts Here (c) mode with harder enemies, invasions and all that shit

Awesome, good to hear. I mean, it's a Souls game so I'd be buying it no matter what, but I just had to know.

That's pretty hard to imagine, unless this is the most spire and samey castle-look infused Souls game yet.

While it's not the same speed, more than one of the early previewers were claiming that the gameplay does feel like it turns into Bloodborne after a point. Instead of just the gameplay differences (mostly variety), I don't particularly care for how Bloodborne looks as a whole either. Mostly again it's just about variety though, not necessarily the way any one particular area looks in a vacuum; which is typically fine.

The prison. there is a statue of a dragon man sitting outside of the room with countless curse ladies

Thanks man -- I've just been back and forth through the
prison
again a few times and I can't find anything... can you give me any further info?

Edit: Nvm, found it!

The x-axis on my right analog stick seems to have flipped. IDK if I accidentally changed something in the settings or what but can't figure out to get it back. On the JPN PS4 version.

To the people who are late-game/finished, is there any bosses that you expect the majority of people to REALLY struggle with? if so how many?

Okay...

Is there any other bonfire in
Cathedral of the Deep
? I've been wandering around here for 40 minutes, ran out of flasks and am now in front
of a fog door after running past the giants in that swamp area.

Man, 10 hours in and my mind is blown by how good the game is compared to Dark Souls 2. And as I've heard the game just gets better and better later on..

This game should've been Dark Souls 2

I loved BB combat too, and I thought it would be difficult to go back, and oh boy, I was wrong. I mean, IS NOT BB, but is the best combat on the series, a more refined and faster version with incredible well designed enemies. It really is DS mix with BB.

In terms of art direction and horror tone, while not as prominent, obviously, you'll love DS3. Seriously.

No, the area goes around finding shortcuts to that bonfire, that said, near that swamp area should be another shortcut (and I think you missed one)

I can't believe how good it is, seriously, my hype was through the roof and the game is beating all my expectations.

There are shortcuts back to the initial bonfire within the cathedral though the area is huge and I'm not sure where they are relative to your position. I think you passed them though.

Bloodborne was my favorite Souls.

Really? What if you think Bloodborne with its trick weapons and quicker speed is better combat wise than any Dark Souls game? Would I still think DSIII is best gameplay of the series? If so I would be happily surprised as I naturally would think going back to DS style would be hampering the improvements BB made (again this is only my opinion as I know some prefer the sword and board style).

Hey guys, few build questions:

1. Any way to respec?

2. Any 'smart' caps to stop at for each stat, like the previous games, 20, 40 vigor, etc, so on? Assume I'm playing a dex/roll fighter.

So like 40 vigor, 40 end, etc, what should I gun for?

3. What's the earliest 100% shield? I heard it's the early
black knights
but I've killed over 20 with no luck.

4. I just beat
Vordt of the Boreal Valley
. How many Estus should I have? I have only 4 right now.
I'll bump this for you. I'd like answers to some of these too.

NG+ done.

Hmm...

1. Yes.
Seems related to a specific covenant

2. Don't know yet, I wouldn't worry about these things, and just create the build you want.

3.
I'm sure there's one in first area after tutorial, where? I don't remember. I think the maiden may sell one too.

4. Not sure, I think you're fine, as much there should be one in that area, but I don't remember well. I didn't started using estus shards until sometime later lol.

Okay March promptly get the fuck out already thanks

Anyone else rolling with just a great sword and no shield? You can block with them but I'm sure this impacts durability.

Any downsides to this? Should I use a shield as well?

Fume UGS has a parry like move, if you want a parry. Or you can equip a parrying dagger if they're in the game.

I didn't use a shield at all in DSII. The only downside is some moves are easier to block with a shield than dodge, so some boss fights are a bit tougher, but it gives you an off-hand for spell casting, etc.
