I love that when talking about his reasons for not going back to the Terminator franchise, he mentions other filmmakers as having pissed in the suit - so its not something he wants to go back to.

Yeah, as if anyone's gonna believe that Cameron!
hes been really inconsistent with how much extra footage will be on the DVD

first he says 12 minutes will be added to the film, now hes saying only 5-6 finished minutes and they can only be added by optional branching. In EW he says 40 minutes total will be on the DVD, here only 15 minutes of unfinished stuff along with the completed footage.

I think he is just bullshitting and holding out on us so they can do a special edition re-release in a few years or something :P

I mean, "can't afford it?" lol, they could pay for that shit with the money they use to wipe their ass with considering how much the flick has made.

I 100% believe this. Now its more than likely FOX not him doing it or its both. I honestly think this will happen next year or something and we'll get the AVATAR: Special Edition with the 40 minutes of footage he originally mentioned or something, but who knows maybe he just didn't realize how much was and wasn't done before.

Really liked his response to the Oscar question.

Ya one of the best responses about the oscars I've seen.

Had plans to see this before Christmas, just saw it yesterday in IMAX 3d. My first IMAX and first 3d movie. I came to the conclusion that size is meaningless when it comes to a screen, but the sound was phenomenal.

Great experience, decent movie. That speech near the end: Ugh. Embarrassing. Not enough tension throughout the beginning and not enough Cameronisms. Think, *gun to head* "Yeah, you know what that is."

I hope any sequels will do away with the introductory stuff and just be full of Cameron awesomeness.

"Initial release" of DVD and Blu-ray... god I smell the triple-dipping from Fox already.

First release in April > 3D release in November > Ultra Special Edition 3 disc edition around sequel time.

Has this bit of news been posted?

http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-408462?hpt=C2

During today's weekly demonstration against the Israeli Wall, Avatar heroes came and joined the struggle against the Israeli occupation. Demonstrators painted blue held the Palestinian flag and were shot at by the Israeli Army. One person was reported injured after being hit by a gas grenade. Bi'lin, Palestinian Territory. 12/02/2010.

Article has pics, too.

We already know they're triple dipping:

  • Regular DVD/Blu-Ray in April/May
  • Extended Blu-Ray in November/December
  • Regular 3D in November (according to that interview)

The quadruple dip will be the deluxe 3D set next year, I'm sure.

I'll probably pick up a decent Blu-Ray player when the extended cut comes out late this year. It'll be a few years before I do the 3DTV thing.

Also, Avatar vaulted back up to #2 yesterday. :lol

WW through Wednesday:

Domestic: $669,935,879
+ Foreign: $1,719,328,760

= Worldwide: $2,389,264,639

Such an absurd number to look at.

Awesome, he was on right before Avatar came out, and the time before that was right when Titanic came out. Glad he came back sooner - this one should be really interesting.

So $2.4 Billion will happen this weekend. Will it reach $2.5B?

It's gonna fly beyond 2.5. It's still pulling in good cash. It'll probably top out at 2.7-2.8, but who knows.

In the end there will be a $700 million gap between #2 and #3 world wide and a potential $1 billion gap between #1 and #2 :lol

Awesome interview. I really enjoyed the entire thing. Again I know we've talked about it, but I love his take on the oscars at the end. How his fantasy is that Bigelow wins best director and the TEAM wins for best picture for Avatar. I honestly believe he thinks and wants that outcome and it's not some stupid PR stunt.

So everyone's had enough of discussing Avatar?

It looks like it'll hit $2.5b by the end of this week.
At this point anyone who's seen it is just talking about box office, the Blu-Ray/DVD release and the sequels, and those are either talked out or ongoing in separate threads.

I think it will top off at about $2.8b, a nice round $1b ahead of Titanic.

I also think I'm going to go see it one last time this coming weekend, before it bolts from theaters for Alice.

I think I also might be seeing it one last time later this week. Will make it 6 times all up for me. Its been 6 weeks or so since I last saw it I believe.

Yeah... so finally got around to seeing this. Watched it in 3D last Wed.

And then again the next Fri.

I've never done that before. :lol

I thought it was amazing. Any complaints I might have, I won't bother expressing. I enjoyed the movie far too much to nitpick it. Kind of felt like a kid sitting there, reminded me of watching a movie at the theater for the first time.

The wife and I went for our third time Friday night. We went twice opening weekend, but wanted to see it in a theater again before it starts its mass evacuation.

Saw it yesterday in 3D at IMAX. I have to say that it blew me away. All of those "I felt like a kid again" sentiments make sense now.

I can reasonably say, however, that I wouldn't have been much impressed with a 2D version.

Ya I'll be seeing it again during the final week at my theater. Thankfully I know all of the management there since I hired them and they're my old staff so they'll let me know when the final showing is happening. I have a group of like 20-22 people who all want to goto the final showing before it leaves so that should be fun :D

AVATAR grossed $51 million in international markets this weekend. Overseas total now stands at $1.78 billion. Worldwide tally is $2.46 billion.

Will also pass Titanics world wide take in just international numbers alone this week.

Holy shit, I just looked to see if there were any interesting movies in my city's theater at the moment...

When I went to see Avatar in January, there was only one screen dedicated to Avatar (the 3D one). Now there appears to be not two, not three but FOUR out of eight screens that show it (some shared with another movie). All the movies that opened since are gone besides the February romances, Wolfman, The Lightning Thief and Shutter Island.

I...wow.

Avatar got buttfucked by The Hurt Locker at the BAFTAs. A sign of things to come, I guess.

Titanic went 0 for 10 at the BAFTAs then swept the Academy Awards.

BAFTA has also agreed 3x with the Academy the last decade: Gladiator, Return of the Kind and Slumdog.

I (irrationally, maybe) still have a gut feeling Avatar will win BP at the Oscars.

Ya it is going to win most of its categories besides Director is how I see it happening. It might lose editing to Hurt Locker also though.

Thinking back on my third viewing of Avatar this past weekend, I came to the realization that James Cameron needs to use this tech and make a Halo movie. Neil Blonkampt would still make a kick ass Halo film, but Cameron would just make it the hugest thing ever.

Random fanboy dreams. After all, most of the design of weapons and whatnot in Halo were Aliens rip-offs, so why not have Cameron himself make the film.

I just saw Hurt Locker..and would totally be cool with it winning Best Picture. The movie was really intense. I also think the editing was top notch. The Oscars have never been a popularity contest, and I really think that Avatar's shot at winning has diminished since the Golden Globes. I do think Cameron should win for best director though. He worked on this film a great deal for a long long time, and deserves the award. It will of course get all the techinical awards.

like most videogames..the story just wont hold up on the big screen. Id rather Cameron do something else that's original, or continue with the Avatar sequel. 90% chance a HALO movie would be awful.

I'm one of the bigger Halo fans around here (to put it lightly), and I agree. I think either Cameron or Blonkampt could make a great film out of it, but they're both better off doing other original projects. I'd rather it not be made; games to remain games.

And jett, as DanielPlainview pointed out, the BAFTA's are no indication of the Oscars (thoe would be the guild awards). I still think The Hurt Locker will win for Director and Picture, but I think Avatar has a pretty good shot at the latter.

So kinda LTTP but my ex called wanting something to do and suggested to go finally see Avatar. Went outta town to go see the IMAX version, and it did not suck! Had some problems in the beginning because my eyes had to get used to it but once they did it was pure awesome.

I was more impressed with the movie than the 3D though, we sat all the way at the sides so that might have ruined the experience a bit.

I've seen in in IMAX and RealD and I didn't feel like the 3D was any better than previous 3D movies using the same technology. Where you sit might have a little something to do with it, but it wasn't that mindblowing even front and center.

Ah yeah, I've been meaning to ask that. How big is the difference between RealD and IMAX? I'm not sure if I want to go out of town again when Toy Story hits

I actually liked the RealD better than the IMAX 3D (though not the whole experience obviously). I noticed that the 3D jittered a little in IMAX if I didn't hold my head completely paralell to the ground. (or maybe I was just tired?)

Was reading a magazine about Avatar (Entertainment Weekly maybe) and it was talking about how James Cameron keeps a souvenir from each of his movies (captain's wheel from Titanic, a Terminator hand), and he's keeping the big mech suit from Avatar and putting it on his front lawn. :lol

Thanks man, I had similiar experiences at first, the subtitles especially were annoying to read
