Meant to post this here earlier so not sure if it was posted already. This movie has fourth biggest global opening of all time and the biggest global opening for a comic book movie of all time.

WORLDWIDE OPENINGS

1 Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2015
2 Jurassic World Uni. 2015
3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 2011
4 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016
5 Furious 7 Uni. 2015
6 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 2009
7 Marvel's The Avengers 2012
8 Avengers: Age of Ultron 2015
9 Transformers: Dark of the Moon P/DW 2011
10 Spider-Man 3 2007

To recap it's the:

  • #1 Easter weekend opening
  • #1 March domestic weekend opening
  • #1 in global comic book movie openings
  • #1 domestic opening for WB
  • #1 opening for a DC movie
  • #4 in global openings
  • #6 domestic opening

Great start and I hope it keeps it up.

Did you detect any lies?

So there are people in this thread that think it won't do 1 billion after a 424 million opening weekend? Even with bad word of mouth it still is going to beat 1.2 billion easily.

Not to take anything away from BvS's successes here, but this movie had a simultaneous WW release, and most of (if not all) the other movies had staggered releases.

Would the global OW record stand if the WW totals where launch aligned for all the other movies in the Top 10?

Civil War is a Spidey movie now.

It's a Spidey movie that promises a better version of what we just got w/ Batman v Superman, on top of that.

I bet we see it open somewhere around 180-190.

But yeah, it could go over 200.

I'll make my prediction now: over 200 million US OW. More precise: 202 mil.

So I went to watch it again today Sunday, with my kid, and there were maybe 20 people in the theatre. When I went to see Deadpool on the 4th day, which was a Monday, it was sold out.

Yes I know it's anecdotal, but I was very surprised.

Montresor, word of mouth IS reviews. When people put their ratings down on that CinemaScore card, that's a review. Maybe it's about time you realised that similarity. You're trying to distance them to show you don't care about critics but it doesn't work if you simultaneously care about word of mouth. They might not be as articulate or as well explained as critics' reviews but when you recommend or tell someone to avoid a film, you're giving that person a review. Especially in this age of social media, there's little difference from a critic review and joe schmoe review other than how many people view that review.

Messofanego, Bobby Roberts: You guys are right. I lost this one.

Spiderman will probably have even less screentime than Wonder Woman in BvSDoJ, they don't even include him in their promotional material other than that few second clip in latest trailer.

I think overselling spiderman in civil war might lead to backlash of people expecting more of Spiderman in the movie.

I imagine BvS also has significantly more screens/showtimes allocated to it, which drives down the average per-screen attendance.

Not until the
Minecraft* film
opens.

* Providing that the execution is perfect, of course.
You need mass appeal across generations to get 200 mil level openings. Minecraft has near non-existent appeal for anyone over 30. To do 200 mil you need both the 15 year olds and the 65 year olds. It could be the best execution possible but those 30 and over are not going to rush out opening weekend for a animated Minecraft movie under any circumstance.

Are 9 and 10 year olds going to go to the cinema themselves? Minecraft might be child centric as a property but it will bring in a family audience. While that won't be 40 yo men going by themselves repeatedly as in Star Wars etc it could bring out an audience that isn't usually served by most films.

I can't speak about it in a first hand manner but I know people who have seen various surveys and 'tracking reports' (not the right wording I'm sure) that show Minecraft is the number one property among certain age groups by a huge margin.

If WB can get the film right (that's a massive if given I have no idea how to do it) Minecraft could bring out a family audience in a manner we haven't seen since Force Awakens.

You can't get 200 million off a pure family audience. You need the adult couples and group of friends. Kids/families are nowhere near enough. You need multi-generation appeal. Not just parents dragged by their kids.

Families are great for long legs. But we are talking opening weekend here. Families aren't the ones who set opening records.

The 20/30 something fanboys and fan girls are the ones able to set opening weekend records. Minecrafts target demo is just too young for opening weekend breaking numbers. Families are the ones who come after openings and help have long legs. They aren't the ones who rush out day one.

The nature of a family/kids movies makes it all it impossible for that sort of film to ever set an opening weekend record.

The Force Awakens has 20-30 something fanboys. The audience that rushes out to opening weekend. Families helped it do 2 billion. But they are not the demographic for opening weekends.

It would be amazing, spectacular, it will totally get people caught up in it's web

SUN for #BatmanvSuperman came in about $4M below studio projection at $33M+. Opening wknd of $165M+, still huge at #7 all-time.

https://twitter.com/GiteshPandya/status/714461139804033024

Still huge, obviously, but they sandbagged to get headlines about $170m. As a recent point of reference, TFA's first Sunday came in $10m higher than projected.
So only a few million more than The Dark Knight Rises which didn't have the 3D tax. Not that 165 is bad but that's a little disappointing.

Hard to tell, Easter Sunday is a bit of a flat day normally. Really depends on whether the projections took that into account.

Yeah, the combination of Easter and the studio wanting a nice big round number makes it harder to judge. We'll know pretty early this week how it's holding up.

Official #boxoffice update from WB - #BatmanvSuperman  opened to $166.1M wknd. FRI $81.6M, SAT $50.7M, SUN $33.8M, down 33%.

'DEADPOOL' Is Now The Highest Grossing R-Rated Movie Ever Worldwide

Fox’s superhero action-comedy now had a worldwide box office total of nearly $746 million. That puts it ahead of the movie previously at the top of the chart, The Matrix Reloaded, which grossed $742.1 million worldwide.

You have no idea how hilarious I find that headline
X-Men ain't got shit on DEADPOOL now

I think Snyder is locked in for JL simply because of the release schedule. I don't see him coming back to direct after that.

If Marvel can push back movies to squeeze in a Spiderman movie why can't DC do the same? I am confused why Snyder has to be locked into JL.

The best we can hope for now is that Justice League gets turned into just one movie and Zack Snyder magically figures out how storytelling works.

In one more day it will likely overcome Days of Future Past's worldwide cumulative, which included something like 100 million in China where DP was not shown, so yeah. Utterly dominated by the Pool.

Went to Universal City walk and had to decide between watching BvS and Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. My girlfriend said she'd rather not be depressed today so we watched Greek Wedding.

It was charming, not nearly as charming as the first but it makes me think of my big ass family so it works. Whatever, least I didn't see BvS

Once bitten twice shy, also they're DCU now, gotta keep goin

Man, I liked Days of Future Past more, but hot damn Deadpool
Bet that dude who declined playing Colossus wishes he didn't do that now

I wish it took down Passion too lol

I believe that Justice League "Part One" and "Part Two" are just working titles and that the final film itself will have a subtitle just like the Harry Potter films did. It's not actually a 'two part' film as confusing as the original announcement was.
